I have a vague memory of all of this from h.s. biology but am confused about the + and - part. I am O+, my eldest is O+, our twins are A- and A+. My dh did not know his blood type but I assumed he was A-...that would explain our children's A and the one -. Well, he had surgery yesterday and prior to it they typed his blood and he is A+. So why is one of my children -??

Does any of this make sense?

Anyone understand this and care to explain it?

TIA!

Don''t know but both my husband and I are A+ and my daughters are both A-

+ could mean two + alleles or one + and one -.

- always indicated two - alleles.

Thus, two parents who have +- (thus + blood type) can each pass a - allele to their child, producing a - blood type.

I am O+ and dh is O-. Both of our kids are O+.

I don't know all the ins and outs but the + and - don't have to do with you or your husband - the A, B, O & AB do. I am A+ & my dh is O+ but our daughters are 0-. It has something to do with the antigens in the blodd or something- I know someone out there has a better explantion!

Here - I just got this from Jeeves -

Scientists sometimes study Rhesus monkeys to learn more about the human anatomy because there are certain similarities between the two species. While studying Rhesus monkeys, a certain blood protein was discovered. This protein is also present in the blood of some people. Other people, however, do not have the protein. The presence of the protein, or lack of it, is referred to as the Rh (for Rhesus) factor.
If your blood does contain the protein, your blood is said to be Rh positive (Rh+). If your blood does not contain the protein, your blood is said to be Rh negative (Rh-).

This Rh factor is connected to your blood type. For example, your blood may be AB+ which means that you have type AB blood with a positive Rh factor. Or, you might have O- blood which means that you have type O blood with a negative Rh factor.

It is particularly important for expectant mothers to know their blood's Rh factor. Occasionally, a baby will inherit an Rh positive blood type from its father while the mother has an Rh negative blood type. The baby's life could be in great danger if the mother's Rh negative blood attacks the baby's Rh positive blood. If this happens, an exchange transfusion may save the baby's life. The baby's blood can be exchanged for new blood that matches the mother's.

My DH, myself and my DS are all O+.

Sometimes two positives can produce a negative, though.

DD and I are O+
DW and DS are A+

My dad and brother are O- (The Red Cross is always glad to see them at the blood bank).

I am O-, DH is A+. I had to have all the Rhogam shots when I was PG and after I gave birth. I remind my kids of this every time they have to have shots. I can't remember what the girls are.

I am O- and DH is A+ so I also had to get those shots . . .before and after for me because both DD and DS are A+

And in comes the bio nerd...

Ok its basic genetics. You have these two little alleles, and each can be either + or -. Now you take two heterozygous people (meaning they have one + and one -) btw that is their genotype, and they will show the characteristics of the +, that is their phenotype. This happens b/c of what we call dominance. The + trait is the dominant the recessive trait is the -. The chances of two heterozygous people producing a homozygous recessive (-) child, is 25%.

I'm 0-, my DH is B+, our DD is 0+ and our son is B+. Now funnily enough, my sister is 0- as well, her DH is A+, the oldest kid is 0+, the second one A+ and I don't know about the third one.:) We like variety in our family...:)I'm really liked by the Red Cross too, however not lately since I've been anemic.:)

We are an odd family. I am AB-, DH is A-, DS #1 (from prev. marriage) is B-
DS #2 (from prev. marriage) is B+ and DS #3 is B-.

My first and third sons are also left handed.

My mom is A+ and my dad is AB+, I and my brother are both AB+. I'll have to ask DFi what he is, it will be interesting to see what type our kid(s) turns out to be.

Another 0- here who had to have that lovely shot after every birth. :)

I have O- as well. Did you get the rhogam during pregnancy as well? I know I had to.

So, can a A parent and a B parent produce a child with an O blood type?

Yes. If one parent has AO (thus blood type A) and one parent has BO (no, not body odor, blood type B) and they both pass the O allele on to their child, the child will be type O.
