It’s not new for older people to criticize younger people. It’s an age old hobby.

but why do we accept older people saying blanket statements about our children? Why is this acceptable in our society?

I’m active in a local FB historical group and I’m constantly annoyed at comments about “young people this” “ young people that” with derogatory statements. We can reminisce without bringing down other people.
Every generation is unique, awesome and has something to offer.

Why do we want to put down entire groups of people based on when they were born?

Of course we all know that Gen X rocks and is the best generation!

I completely agree! The “kids these days” mindset is tiring. People are people, kids are kids, the only difference is what pop culture is happening at the moment. You don’t have to like the music they’re listening to, your grandparents didn’t like your music, and their grandparents didn’t like theirs. Teenagers sometimes make bad decisions, it doesn’t matter what year it is. It’s always been this way. Respect is a two way street. If all you’re doing is complaining about gen z to gen z, why would they want to show you respect?

Sorry- this is a huge pet peeve of mine and I generally just walk away from people who start it. I don’t have time for that! 😂 (Also, I’m JenX, too! Let’s hear it for the forgotten generation!)

Yes no one bashes the X!
But in reality when you have people saying all young people are lazy or rude you are insulting a lot of posters here.
Many of us are the parents of under 30 children so you are implying our children are rude and lazy.

In the Facebook group I referenced it’s often walking to school references. I will clarify that my kids weren’t lazy because they got driven to school. They got driven to school because they attended daycare as I worked full time and it was illegal here to allow a 5 year to walk 3-4 miles to daycare on their own. I would get told “thats different “, it’s frustrating.

I understand what you're saying but I think a) it's always been like that and b) it goes in reverse too (young people making blanket statements about old people).

Thank goodness someone else gets it! Thank you!

And that in reverse is wrong also. There are not nice people in all age groups.
I’m in my 50s and haven’t noticed the reverse as much but absolutely it’s there.

The boomers are now coming for the zoomers! (Generation Z born after 1995…)

supposedly the now turning 40 year old Millennials are now saying “okay zoomer…”

As a millennial, no we are not.

I absolutely hate the criticism of younger generations. It's been happening since the beginning of time. I actually see great things in gen Z. They are unwilling to accept poor treatment, are open-minded, and hard working.

Even Aristotle complained about the younger generation:
“[Young people] are high-minded because they have not yet been humbled by life, nor have they experienced the force of circumstances.

They think they know everything, and are always quite sure about it.”

I read an article this weekend in our local paper that mentioned the millennium/zoomer thing. First I had heard of it. It was an editorial so maybe more of a personal perspective. (Or local?)

I just recall it as I find the generations fascinating to study.
Yes Aristotle! I recall that quote but couldn’t remember who it was attributed to. Thanks for bringing it up.

Well, I would point out we live in a world now where your smartphone and computer, and your streaming service and your cable box and your credit card company all track a lot of things you do and sell it.
And while that research certainly doesn't apply to everyone in a age group, a lot of those generalizations are based in fact.

LOL. You are Gen X and read a newspaper?

Gen X is as old as age 56. We’re not all spring chickens.
And yes I’m a huge reader and love a lazy Saturday morning with my coffee and big Saturday paper. Makes me happy.
I only get Saturday print. Rest of week is app only.

Baby boomer here, so spring chickens compared to me. So I read a newspaper (granted the digital version) every day, I still have a landline for safety reasons, and I paper file my Income Taxes.

Not sure of your point?
Of course each generation is unique.

my point is let’s not label a whole generation with negative connotations. It’s a rude thing to do.

And my point is, that is what marketing is all about. It's not rude, it's how businesses make sure they are providing the goods and services their customers want.

In the sixties it was 'never trust anyone over 30'. Now that I am in my sixties, I seldom trust anyone under 30. You can be whip smart, but experience still counts.
Agreed!

But yet we also need to be open minded to the ideas of our young. Let’s not assume they don’t have great contributions and the old way is always the best way.
