It's day #4 of the Clear Springs rescue effort. Nick is at a CS hospital pacing. In a wheelchair, Sharon has a broken leg and worried about what will become of Noah. Nick tells her not to worry so much; she'll only make herself sick; she should be grateful Noah's alive. Sharon is also worried about Jack, but there's been no word. A female doctor comes in to report that Noah has "a few broken ribs", but that was "to be expected." Noah also has a ruptured spleen that needs to come out and the doc needs written consent before Noah can be operated on. Sharon wants to see Noah, so the doctor gives her a push.
At the CS hotel, Colleen has arrived. She's fitful and worried about the Professor and her "Uncle Jack". Kevin tells her not to worry about Jack. "He's too toxic to die." Then it hits Colleen; "someone could die down there!" Taking a line from his brother, Kevin quips, "That calls for a conclusion," then reminds Colleen that she once survived being trapped in "a burning freezer."
At the scene, Neil is giving reporters an update. Ten people have been rescued so far; no deaths.
J.T., Daniel, Victor and Nikki are milling about wondering where Victoria can be when a rescue worker walks over to show them some personal items pulled out of the ashes. Oh Lord! One of the items is Victoria's purse! Nikki immediately goes into total meltdown.
As the camera pans, we are reminded again that this is the Out of the Ashes saga.
Sharon wants to know how long Noah's surgery will take. The doctor says he'll have only the best surgeon. Nick is on the phone getting an update from Nikki. Victoria's purse was found and now it's Nick turn to worry when he just told Sharon not to worry.
Jack is seen not moving as dogs converge on the area. A waiting for any word Victor and Nikki thank the rescuers for their wonderful work.
J.T. learns from Victor that special equipment is being brought in; microphones and mini-cameras will be dropped into the hell hole.
David appears to ask Nikki if they've found Victoria. When she says they found her purse, David asks, "How did they know that?" Still in meltdown, Nikki can't stop bawling when J.T. declares he's going back in to get Victoria and has to be stopped by Victor.
Victoria is coughing and screaming for the professor.
Back on the surface it's announced that a body has been found; male, caucasian. Now it's Colleen's turn to meltdown.
Neil is being grilled by reporters about the body. Neil says there's no ID, just a white male. Even if he did have a name, he wouldn't give it out until next of kin had been notified. When the reporters press for more, Neil announces there will be no more "interviews" until the crisis has passed.
J.T. and Colleen ponder who was found dead and she bawls some more.
Nick tells Sharon that the first body is coming out. She calls Nikki to ask who it is. Nikki doesn't know, but she'll call when she does.
Victor looks at the body; nobody he knows.
J.T. looks at the body; it's Joe Boddington!
A collective sigh of relief can be heard.
Talking to her baby, Victoria becomes giddy when the professor appears! He wants to know how her baby is; she says it's alive and kicking. Celebrating their good fortune to be alive, the professor has a confession. First, he was never really a boy scout. Second, he's always "admired" Victoria and... she doesn't want to hear it. As they start looking for a way out, the professor compares the situation to what 9/11 must have been like. Victoria says not to worry; Victor will move heaven and earth to find her, just like when she ran away he ordered a skywriter to write in the sky for her to come home. Thing is, that was Cole Howard's idea, although Victor may have paid for it.
On the surface the new equipment is ready to go. As everyone looks on, Victor fiddles with the controls when the incident commander comes along to say the methane gas is now posing a serious danger.
Back at the hospital, Nick is still thinking negative. Sharon whines that Noah's operation is just one more thing the poor boy will have to deal with. Nick says if he could, he'd take it all back but, "I can't control the world."
The incident commander is now on a bullhorn. All civilians are ordered away from the site due to gas, but Nikki refuses to leave until Victor tells her it's too dangerous to stay.
Down below, Victoria asks the professor what's the first thing he's going to do when they get out. He's going to tell Colleen he loves her, climb Mt. Everest and learn how to play the flute! As for Victoria, she's going to paint a masterpiece and be the best mother she can be.
The incident commander tells J.T. of the methane danger as they make audio contact with Victoria and the professor. Just when things are looking up, BOOM!
Bodies and debris are seen flying through the air, but there's no immediate indication that anyone got hurt. All rescue operations are ordered to stop and Neil gets on the horn to tell reporters there was an explosion, but he doesn't have any details.
Down in the hole, Victoria is crying out, "Wake up! Wake up!" The professor wasn't sleeping, but he does have a piece of rebar stuck in his thigh and he's screaming in agony.
And lo, who should be coming down from above?
It's Victor! He's found the unconscious Jack.
Back at the hospital, Noah is out of surgery! He'll live, but there's another problem. Without a spleen he'll be susceptible to infection; another reason for Sharon to pamper him.
Victor calls for help and eventually Jack is pulled to the surface as a reporter gives a blow by blow description.
And then who should go back into the hole?
J.T.!
Nikki calls Nick with the good news that Jack has been found.
J.T. locates Victoria and the professor, they're hauled out and wouldn't you know, just when it looks like Victoria is safe, a pile of rubble falls on her. This can't be good.
Coming attractions...
J.T.: "When will she come to?"
Dr. Ryan: "I have no way of knowing."
Sharon: "Jack told me your eyes were injured in the explosion."
Brad, with bandage over one eye: "I'd give both eyes if it meant the baby is okay."
Nick, with Victor and Nikki: "What about the baby?"
Nikki: "Take care of our daughter. Make sure she comes back to us, please."
