You wimps down south

BUT: you have something that we don't usually have here in the South in the winter: Snow blowers, a whole brigade of snow plows. Last winter we had snow in Southeastern Va., we hardly ever get snow. The only time my DD12 has had snow boots was a few years ago when she went skiing, we just don't have a need for it, then last winter, she ended up getting some from her friend that she couldn't wear anymore.

And why would you need a warning? IT IS DANG HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ha ha.

But we LIKE the snow--we don't like this heat so much but it isn't unusual here either I guess.

I believe this explains why we're under a heat advisory.

The other day an online news source said our heat index was 120 when the dew point was 84 degrees.

The heat advisories are issued based on set criteria, just like any other watch or warning. If the temperature gets above a certain point, they are supposed to issue one. I don't understand why that makes anybody a wimp. :confused3

Me either.:confused3 It got hot in Georgia in May and it's hot still. Our temps have been in the 95-100 range for weeks with 70-80% humidity. We've been in the orange zone(unhealthy for children and those with lung ailments, like asthma & COPD) due to the haze and smog trapped under the high pressure systems. If we could just get some rain to cool things off. All in all,I think we're bearing up pretty well. Our one consolation is that come Thanksgiving it will be 65 degrees and by Valentines Day we will have had 3 inches of snow(or less!) We wouldn't know a snow shovel if it smacked us in the face.

You are missing the point, we had 110 heat index today with no warnings, you have 110 heat index with warnings all over the place. I guess having 110 in MN just isn't a big enough deal to warrant a warning? :confused3

I am not sure if the weather in Montana was in the 80s today, like the map says The forecast for my town doesn't have 80s until Thursday. Then again, my town is high elevation compared to the rest of Eastern Montana which can get rather hot in the summer (over 100 at times)

I remember a winter where it snowed five feet and we were all back in school the next day (they had only cancelled school for one day). Another time high winds put out the power to the school. We were out for half a day. They rarely cancel school here.

Currently it is in the low 60s and we just had a sporadic Florida-type Thunderstorm.

The whole point is that you have your 110 heat index and excessive heat warnings to go along with that, we have 110 heat index and no warnings .:confused3

So what is your point...people in MN are better than other people? Smarter because they don't need a warning? Tougher because they don't need a warning?
Maybe I am just cranky because of the heat ;)

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

OP... you do know we don't call the weather service begging for a warning when it gets hot, right? And you do know we have many hot days with no warning. As the pp said, it has to fit into a specific criteria. Generally speaking though, I never actually need a warning to tell me it is hot. I just go outside and think self.. it is hot out there. :confused3 It is quite rude to call people wimps though, especially for something out of the control of most people on the dis (not thinking we have many poster that have the authority to issue said warnings)

That just got issued, we were NOT under one today.

No, the point is how ODD it is that in MINNESOTA we have 110 degrees and no heat warnings where in the SOUTH they issue warnings for the same temp.

Lighten up people, the heat is making you all cranky :confused3.

Well, of course, it's a well known fact that here in MN, all the men are strong, all the women are good looking, and all the children are above average. Garrison Keillor tells me so every week. :rotfl:

Excuse me but you started the name calling. Don't call us wimps, call the weather service if you want a warning.

The heat here today was almost unbearable, we live in an apt and it took hours for our wall unit (wish we had central) ac to even help :sad2: It makes me sad to think that there are people with out ac especially the elderly. Looks like the heat is unbearable all over the country right now. As a Minnesotan who despises winter I look forward to the summer months, then when they're here I hope for fall. :rotfl:

i'm sorry you've had some hot days. welcome to our world.

you can do a comparison to most of the areas under warning and not only are their temps higher than MN, so are their humidity, UV index, "feels like" temps, etc.

the warnings are not something we all get to vote to have. it's done by the weather service and involves a science about which i am not an expert. so, we aren't wimps because the weather service issues a warning.

Wow, some people here need to take a chill pill. OP was making a joke and you are taking it as a personal insult. Why do you have to think the OP is taking a personal shot at you? She doesn't know you, you don't know her. Take it for what it is and move on. If you are actually offended that 'someone' called you a wimp, you need to get off these boards for a while and find something else to do. :confused3

How do you know we aren't kidding too, maybe you need to take your own advice:flower3:

If everyone is kidding around, great. But I don't think so.

OK so you've had temps over 100 for a few days or even a week or two and we get it for months at the time. Yep, I'm seeing where that makes us all equal there.... :rotfl2: (Actually, we're all equal at WDW and that's what counts:thumbsup2)

It's before 8 am and I'm at work... with no a/c. It broke last night evidently and they're hoping the maintenance can fix it this morning. It's pushing 90 in here with no air circulating except for this little fan I've confiscated! :rolleyes1
