No. I'll just carry this shirt I purchased around the mall with the price tag dangling from it. Of course I want a bag!! Ugh.

Do you guys get asked this question? I understand it at the grocery store for 1 item or milk, but at a department store? Is this a new thing?

i get asked at target, but thats because they dont have free bags anymore. you have to pay 20c for a biodegradable plastic bag, or $2 for an envirobag.

I hadn't heard of that! How long has that been in effect in your area?

Are you kidding me? :headache: Are they that cheap that they can't afford to give you a bag that cost them a penny? Hello, you just spent money in their store, could have even been a lot of money, but they are going to nickle and dime you over a freakin plastic bag? :sad2:

Yes, I have had clerks ask me that. Like you said, for an item or 2 I can understand, but when you have 6 or 7 items? No, please let me juggle them on my way out and see how many things I can drop.

At the mall, I think sometimes they are asking because they are used to people saying they don't one one because they have another bag they can put it in. I know I have done that before. At least, I hope that is the reason because the only other one I can think of is that they are just stupid. :confused3

Some people bring their own bags from home, or if it's just one item, it might fit in a bag you already got from another store or you might just want to carry it. I like when they ask me. :goodvibes

If I've just bought a small item, I can just carry it or stick it in my purse. If I've bought a lot, chances are, I've brought along my reusable bags. :thumbsup2

I think they're just trying to save money, but it helps the environment too.

because if you don't have a bag, you need to purchase one for .5c. PP said
.20c and her location is 'Australia', so that's how much they must charge there. Ontario is slowly bringing out 'bagless' in some of the suburbs as well. Many stores also offer perks in the way of 'points' if you bring in your own bag.

I have now started collecting the re-usable ones as they are so cute.

That doesn't bother me. Especially if it is just one item. I have my receipt and if I'm doing more shopping I will say yes or put it in a different bag. I always feel like you come home with too many bags.

I got the impression I was interrupting a conversation between employees and the person doing the transaction was "done". I didn't have another bag. I have had it happen before when I didn't have a bag too, and that particular time the person was alone. That time, I thought the person was bored and lazy.

Even starting to hear rumblings of banning plastic bags. I guess it's understandable when you see those massive floating garbage islands that are building in the oceans.

Oooh, that's a whole different problem. I can't STAND when the cashier makes me feel like I'm interrupting their personal time by showing up, buying something, and making them have to <gasp> work, while they are at their job.

To be fair, I do think it's also rude if the buyer won't get off their phone or pay attention to the cashier (not that the OP was doing anything like that, but we all know it happens).

It's not stores being cheap. It's a way to cut down on the amount of plastic bags ending up in landfills. Avoid getting charged for a bag by taking your own with you when you go to the store.

I don't know what I'd do with the cat litter if they banned plastic bags!

I think maybe I should start hoarding them, like people seem to be doing with lightbulbs. ;)

It is not a necessarily a matter of them not being able to afford the plastic bags, they do it to try and get you to bring in your own reusable bags to be more environmentally friendly. Sure it helps them save some more by not having to purchase as many plastic bags, but that it not the driving force behind doing it. I would not be surprised to see more and more companies doing this. Some right now take 5-10 cents off your order for each reusable bag, but that isn't really much get people to use them, but I would imagine charging for the plastic bags would.

you wont have to worry about what to do with cat litter.. I"m sure that's next on the want to ban list ;)

I'd be very surprised if we don't see plastic bags eliminated within 10 years. Another positive to the end of plastic bags is that much less oil needed.

Its not about them being cheap, its about trying to get consumers to stop using plastic bags. There are also some states proposing plastic bag fees.

Slightly OT, but last time I was at Disney World, I bought my niece a set of three very cute reusable shopping bags. I don't remember the exact price, but a set of three was surprisingly inexpensive!

I have some from there....they are green with a Mickey head shaped tree on them, I think they were only 99 cents or 1.99. I use them all the time and can't wait to go back and get more.

Speaking of bags....its OT but it bugged me yesterday.
Went to Kohls and I had 2 incredibly RUDE ladies in front of me. Rolling their eyes at the cashier while she was waiting on another lady. It was obvious that the cashier was sick or was fighting allergies. So finally when it was her turn the lady scans her items, tell her the total and the cashier is folding the stuff and the lady says "UMMMM....like could I have a bag, ugh!?!?!" I was like wow lady, give her a minute to breathe!!!!! She was looking at her friend behind her who was going to be checked out next and rolling her eyes. I just wanted to scream! I hate rudeness!

I actually prefer it since most of the time I don't want a bag.
