You might get a thousand dollars stimulus package

Looks like we are back to the one-time $1,000 check (in lieu of the initial $1,200 that was proposed)

Senators reconvening at noon

Likely depends on how many extras are being attached that have nothing to do with the current crisis. It's a chance of a lifetime to get all the goodies you've been denied for years. No one can focus on the current issue and act NOW.

Well said !!

I will be putting the checks into my emergency fund. I am working full time as a nurse. Right now I am working a lot in long term care for the extra money. Feel very blessed that I am debt free and will be fine.

Stay safe.

Instead of giving everyone a one time payment they really need to give the recently unemployed part of their salaries, maybe 50%, so they can at least get by. Plus, right now there really isn't any place to spend the money to help the economy. I know there is online still but I doubt most people are going to by stuff when they may not have a job tomorrow. Pay the unemployed right now and then when things start to get better, give people a stimulus check that they can spend at their local stores. That may jumpstart the economy.

At the immediate level states would be better off doing their own stuff in relation to unemployment measures. The government can be far reaching by doing stuff on their level and an overhaul of the unemployment system in this immediate time of need is probably not the wisest IMO.

Why can't we have unemployment adjustments AND additional financial security even if it's not a huge amount? Why does it have to be one or the other. Who does what seems states have an easier go ahead of adjusting unemployment on their end.

I don't think business owners who are on the verge of closing take that much comfort in just only doing unemployment..they don't want to have to be unemployed. They don't want to lose their livlihood and they don't want to have the prospect of never reopening.

My state has already passed measures related to length of time one can be on unemployment as well as create a loan program for business owners. Last week my state had over 11,300 applications for unemployment. The week before was just under 1,300. The system is already getting overwhelmed. It's not the only thing that can poof solve the problem especially because it just places a new strain on an existing system.

As has been mentioned upthread, expanding unemployment doesn't help a lot of people who have lost income. Independent contractors, part time workers, those who are new to the workforce, and those who were forced to quit or are getting zero-hour schedules but still technically have their jobs aren't eligible in most cases. And those categories encompass an awful lot of the people whose income is most directly impacted by this.

Also, using unemployment as the basis for aid does nothing to help those parents who are still working but suddenly have big new childcare worries/expenses because the school is closed.

And there's one more problem with using UE as a rescue measure: UE is a state-supported insurance system, not a social benefit program. Employers pay in based on their past claims history. So not only would an unprecedented surge in cases likely push rates higher across the board, the burden would fall heaviest on the hardest hit businesses who will be assessed higher rates just as they're trying to get back in business when all this ends. And that will act as a drag on business recovery for years after the immediate crisis has passed.

And they need to give people an amount of money that makes a dent ! A number of politicians were pushing for monthly checks , until things (hopefully) improve - I remember the last "stimulus" - they wanted people to use it for restaurants, trips, clothes, etc - the number given was so low that people ended up paying a few bills, and that was it - how does that stimulate the economy ?

The mortgage relief for those losing income is a great idea. Hope that they put something together to help renters also.

I like this plan -

The proposal calls for a debt holiday, $2,000 monthly checks for all Americans, coverage of all healthcare expenses, significant investments in small businesses and the production of life-saving supplies.
