you resort to hand feeding your dog his kibble in the bedroom.:rolleyes1

I just can't stand not seeing him eat. I know he likes the kibble, we just don't understand why he's eating so little these days. Yes it is #@$@##@ cold outside but He's in a nice warm heated house.

Any ideas while you all laugh at me?

And please feel free to laugh all day:rotfl:

I've done that before. Hand feeding dogs is fine. Don't worry, it just means you love him. My dog is the opposite though. When it's really cold outside she seems to have a bigger appetite. I think she doesn't like summer heat.

I wouldn't laugh at you...considering we are the people who use UTENSILS to feed our dog when she won't eat willingly. She will NOT take it from our hand...but use a spoon and she goes right for it.

As an aside, she loves ice cream. Not doggie ice cream, people ice cream. One time I put some in a bowl, put it in front of her...and she stared at it. Then looked at me, then looked at the bowl again. I got a spoon...that's when she started eating it. She just had to have her spoon, I guess :sad2:

It is nice to know I am not alone. I just wish i knew why there are days when he won't eat from his bowl.:confused3 We know our kitchen is not open and prefers company while he eats so we're happy to stay with him while he does. Someday I'll get the hang of this dog owning me thing :lmao:

I've never owned a dog where they wouldn't eat from a bowl!

He's just a well cared for dog. ;) Heck, he's wanting to be one of you guys...

Is a vet check in order if your dog suddenly got picky about his food?

-- I'm not laughing because I too have hand fed dogs. And changed kibble brands, added yogurt to the kibble, and oil and, sardines.:rotfl2: I'm utterly soft with my pups and like tem to have a spoonful of tasty stuff on top of the food.

On the other hand, a chow hound going off food can be a sign of something else going on healthwise. I usually err on the side of caution having learned the hard way.

Agreed
The minute our schnauzers turn away from thier food bowl instead of inhaling it, is the reason they have to go to the vet, especially if their gums are getting pale.

I'm not wanting to be an alarmist, but if this continues for more than a day or so (picky eating) you may wish to call your vet. Dogs can have off days and not eat, but every major health issue I've faced with a dog has been signaled by a loss of appetite. I've seen some bad health issues--spleen engorgement needing emergency surgery, kidney failure, and liver failure/cancer. A vet is critical if you are seeing pale gums, vomiting, refusing to drink or lethargy. Dental issues can also cause a dog to not want to eat.

Now, that said, I really do understand you hand-feeding your dog. I've lost my two older dogs, but I did at times resort to hand-feeding when they were not sick. Once my dog became fearful of her food dish. It was stainless and her tags clanked against it odd and scared her. We went through a period where she would only eat from a paper plate. You do what is needed. Good luck.

I'm another one that would be doing a visit to the vet if this went on for more than 24 hours. We have schnauzer that loves her food so we know if she won't eat something pretty serious is wrong.
The last time our dog was sick she laid on the lounge and we held ice cubes for her to lick.
No laughing from me and I hope your doggy is feeling better soon.

TY for the concern. Onslow is more himself today. He had breakfast from his bowl this morning b4 church with no problems. I think its mostly the weather, he seems a bit down because its nice and sunny but we're not spending a lot of time outside because it is so very cold. He a Lhasa Apso and he likes to lay about which is fine with us, cause we don't have room for 1 with tons of energy.

Next week we're all going up to the beach and hopefully the weather will be a little bit better so he can get nice long walks. Now if i could just figure out which kind of toys he likes:rolleyes1

We took him to a petstore yesterday and got him a busy buddy bottle thingy and he doesn't seem interested at all after sniffing it:confused3

I think we all indulge our animals! Puffy, one of my sister's lop-eared bunnies, didn't want her morning treat yesterday which is unusual for her. So my sister said she ended up lying on the floor by the bunny pen and hand feeding her just to make sure she would eat something. Puffy was fine. Turned out she just felt like controlling her human that day!

I don't think you're a sucker! I even keep a glass of water on the table next to the bed. When my dog gets thirsty, he goes to that side of the bed and waits for me to get his glass of water and hold it for him while he takes a drink.

When I was growing up we had a beagle who NEVER ate from a bowl. It was the strangest thing. When he was a puppy we hand fed it to him but then he started to just either dump the bowl over completely or nudge some kibble out with his paw or nose and then eat it off the floor.

I do it too!

I think it means you really love him. :goodvibes My little Chihuahua wanted me to feed him more and more. I then started making him meals...from scratch. :) I just made him buffalo and potatoes and hand feed him the entire thing. He passed away the next day ( This was last week, he was 20). I was very happy that i had paid such attention to him, I knew he felt loved and comfortable.

That is sweet. I'm sorry that he's passed but its nice to know he had a good long life with you:lovestruc
