Hi,

What a topic.

I've been selling for a little over a month. Can anyone give me advice on hooking up with wholesalers to sell say action figures or games or diecast etc? The companies themselves require you to buy WAY to much for my liking (at least this early in my selling life).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi all - first post to this board, but y'all have inspired me. I've been selling off some extra fabric from my daughter's room. I have a yard up for auction right now, but someone e-mailed me and wants more yardage. Can I "legally" sell it off of ebay to her? I don't have enough feedback yet to do a BIN, could I just put up another auction and let her bid on and then end the auction early? What should I do?
Thanks!
Kim

I know that 7 days is probably not enough time for a money order to arrive from California and I do not hold them to the 7 days as long as they have contacted me. I do think the buyer should have responded to my end of auction notice indicating his/her method of payment and providing a mailing address as my terms of sale request. At that time I would have quoted the additional shipping charges. My auction does state that shipping outside the US will be more.

Anyway, I emailed the buyer this morning and quoted her the additional shipping charges. She emailed back - how do you want me to pay? So it all worked out.

Thanks for your advice!

If you have the extra yardage (not included in the auction), you can sell it to her off ebay. But it is against the rules to end an auction early for her to buy it. And to simply put up an auction for her to buy, she risks someone else outbidding her.

I assuem you mean according to eBay's rules. Although by their rules, you can't sell the yard you have up now off eBay, you can certainly sell something else you own to her "off" ebay.

Okay - exactly as I thought. Thanks so much for all of the great info posted. I read this thread for 2 weeks straight to get the info that I needed to start selling. I'm doing quite well just getting rid of the stuff I have sitting around here! Thanks again!

Some wholesalers require you to have a resellers permit. We found that out when were selling our new toys over the Christmas holiday. The resellers permit was easy to obtain, and all it involved was a phone call to the state office.

Although, now we do have to submit some small paperwork though.

It's easy to obtain, in NY it's a resale tax certificate, but be prepared to fill out a from 1-4 times a year, and to collect sales tax on anything you sell within NYS. Also, be sure, if you buy from NY wholesalers, if they sell to use sans sales tax, assuming you will pay the tax when you sell the item, that on (at least in NY) your sales tax forms, you have to "repay" the sales tax you should have paid, if you sell out of the state.

I have found that a lot of times "wholesalers" are not really that (true discounts). If you find a good deal, rest assure that a zillion people are already selling that item on eBay. Or if you buy a pallet load, which is usually returns, out of date stuf, etc, so much can't be sold, that you still aren't saving.

Actually we did well.. on our toys. They weren't out of date , and were at at least $2 less per cost/per item than the lowest cheapest store. (I found this particular item at an Odd Lots type store for a certain amount, and the wholesale was at least $2 less per item, and even more deeply discounted when you bought more.

And it being the nature Ebay, it was a significant profit on an item that cost very low for us... some times we would make at least $10 on ONE ITEM! (and this item was a small, low cost toy). By the 6th toy, we had paid for4 entire cases by wholesale cost, and we sold most by Christmas. We still have 6 left.. these toys were really good to us.

This situation worked well for us, but we did research cost, different wholesalers, etc. We found it better to go to the manufacturer and buy direct from them. We got a great deal, and it wasn't out of date, or a return. I never usually go with wholesalers because I do better "on my own" but not in this case...

So far, we've not had to collect sales tax from anyone.. But since we are in a tristate area, who knows if they really live in my state, but have it mailed to thier moms in Philly, or Wilmington Delaware?

Im not sure what you are saying....You are actually agreeing with what I said..that wholesalers usually aren't that great. Much better to get direct from the manufactuerer. As I stated, often times, the stuff you get from wholesalers is out of date, returns etc...unlike when you buy from the manufacturer.

Wholesalers and manufacturers are two entirely different ballgames. You can "buy wholesale" from a manufacturer..but that's different from buying from a wholesaler. That's just buying wholesale.

I too buy from a manufacturer, but I go through a third party, since he orders for people and stores all over and he actually gets my item cheaper for me..but it's brand new and sent from the maker.

This manufacturer has two rates "public rate" and "wholesale rate". The wholesale rate was direct from the manufacturer than the public rate.. maybe its just thier wording... or how it is worded on the invoice. They weren't even going to give me a quote without a reseller number.

The "wholesalers" on Ebay obviously need to make a profit, so that is why thier "deals" aren't that great.
We got various information from many people in our research some being from "wholesalers".-- and they weren't as good as a deal.

You are lucky that you were able to get someone to drop ship for you? (Am I interpreting that correctly?) We are looking into that as well, but we aren't there yet.

Can anyone walk me thru how to put a picture on here??? I have an item I want to list but I have no idea what its possible worth could be.. Its an old bowl.. there are no markings on it and I dont know how to research it.. Hoping to post it here and get anyones suggestions on it..

I have also tried using the image function on this board in the past but it has never worked for me. Would love to know just for knowledge sake.

Yes..except I actually pay the manufacturer. I just place the order through this guy, This guy is a buyer for many, many companies. His price is way better than my "wholesale" price from the company.

When most people say they are looking for wholesalers, it's different from the wholesale price you got from the company. Most big time sellers on eBay that use wholesalers are not buying from the company. Maybe I was wrong in what the OP was looking for. I thought she was looking for a wholesaler..not a company that sells their items at wholesale prices (in either case, you still need a resale certificate (which is just called a tax certicficate in some states) or a business license. For most people the companies "good" wholesale price is for way more items than most of us have space for. We buy our item by the pallet load..but it's an item Walmart buys 10,000-20,000 at a time..so we are still small potatoes, and the company still doesn't give us a great price. My middle man buys for many stores, so he is able to give me a better price for the amount I buy than the company can. Because eBay is so competitive, I would be stupid if I shared his name, and ended up with more competition : ) Whenever someone asks for this info, no matter what list I'm on, no one gives away the info they had to search long and hard for. Sounds mean, but I'm just telling it like it is.

I agree!

We got lucky that this toy is a smaller item, and can fit in our basement!

Hi,

Actually I tried working with the manufactuer of one item but they require you to purchase too much. So I found someone who buys direct from them and there is no such purchase requirements. I'm working on the old license/tax thing so we can purchase what we want.

I thought I'd ask if others knew of good places to deal with but I understand the whole 'keep it quiet' thing.

If there's anything you'd like to share privately, you can send me a PM.

Thanks everyone for the help and great topic.

Do you think it is too early to list Easter dresses? I was thinking of putting up my daughters old dresses (worn once for Easter  ) and the gallery sale would be nice as I was planning on doing a gallery picture. This worked well for my Christmas dresses.
