I HAVE MORE BIDS!!!! All of my auctions ending today now have bids. I sacrificed yesterday by lowering the starting bid by half. I had a bid on one of the items almost immediately, plus a bid on a clothing listing. I now have bids on all four items ending in the next few minutes. It may only be $6.96 right now, but it's better than sitting around here!

I just got off the phone with PayPal and they do take out fees on Echecks once you've upgraded to accept credit cards. I never knew this and only thought they took out fees for credit card payments.
Once you upgrade they take the fees for ALL payments you receive, regardless of how funded. After I got to thinking I was going to ask if you had a premier account...

If it goes anything like it did for me, you definitely will !! And for some reason (probably that "impulse" thing) when they're paying by credit card they seem to be more inclined to bid higher, and higher, and higher !!!! Yipeeeee!

And you'll LOVE the debit card! I've only had mine a very short time and I've already received close to $30 in cash-back.. Helps offset the fees they charge you considerably..

For the few cents it's costing me to go this route, I wouldn't have it any other way!!

After all - more customers and higher bids is the "name of the game" - right?? ;)

Good luck to all of you!

C. Ann...I think you are right. Right after I added my post, I went to my three auctions (LOL, it's a slow week for me) that had 0 bids, and revised them to include credit card payments, and just got a bid on something that's been up for 5 days with no bids!

I don't know if it's just a coincidence or what, but I'm not going to fight it! Woowee!!

I have a question regarding Priority Mail and Delivery Confirmation. I just had a buyer pay and I'm sending out their item tomorrow. I just noticed their address is a PO Box. Can I still use Priority and Delivery Confirmation with a PO Box?

I mailed a package that way about 3 weeks ago, it was the priority box that is the size of a shirt box. Possibly you should give your post office a call to see if the size of the box you need to send is acceptable to be received at a po box.

Thanks Claudia! The item is a video so the box should be ok. I just wasn't sure about the delivery confirmation. This is all new to me, so I'm learning as I go. I am so thankful for this thread! Thanks again!

I do have a question regarding one of the auctions that I have going right now. I have included photos with all of my auctions. However on one particular auction the photo upload did not go through. Somehow this slipped my attention until after the fact. The auction now has 2 bids on it- but I am pretty sure it would do better with a photo. I have tried playing around with making a revision but because there are bids I cannot find a way to add the photo. Does anyone know if I have any way to fix this?

I am not sure if you can add pictures after there is a bid placed. If you go to the Ebay home page, there is tab right under the place you can search in a light yellow box with a ? mark that says "Live Help"...they will do a live chat with you and will help direct you as to how to add the picture if it is possible to do.

If you send an item to a PO box with Delivery Confirm. The person may have to "pick up" the item at the desk, same with a package that won't fit in the box.

Regular DC goes right to my PO Box (DC with sig gets picked up at the desk). Oversized means I get a card (nothing on it but my PO Box number) which means I have to pick it up at the desk, since it didn't fit in my tiny box. You are suppose to buy a box that fits most of your mail..they told me I'm fine if I only get a few oversized a week.

With the paypal debit card you get 1.5%back but only if used for credit not debit right? Does the money come right out of your paypal account? Or are you given a bill like a regular CC? I'm just trying to decide whether to get one or not. It would be great to get back a little of your fees. Do those of you who use the card still sweep out your account? Do you leave enough in only for shipping expenses and supplies? Boy now I'm confusing my self:eek: :D .
I have a uncle who collected decanter's awhile ago and now he wants to sell them. Some of them are pretty old and are stilled sealed with the alcohol in them. Can I sell those or do I have to have a big party and empty them before selling them;) ? Anyone know?
It's great to see everyone taking the plunge and doing so well! I've been doing well selling my DH's cd's on half. I don't have much listed on eBay right now though I need to get on it and get more stuff listed!:)
Thanks for the help.

I am pretty sure I read that you can not sell alcohol on ebay, so that would mean you better start planning that party :teeth:

The money comes right out when you use the card, and the balance has to be sufficient for the purchase. You then get a corresponding credit for the 1.5% cashback, and both may show pending for a day or so. You do not get any bill - it all happens right on line and you see it itemized.

I do not sweep out my account... in fact, I've put money in there when I wanted to make a particular purchase and get the cash back. As well, you can earn interest on the balance, which is more than my checking account does for me!

Dang !!! I wish I had posted a question on here before I purchased our airline tickets.. You see - I didn't have the cash in my Paypal account at the time - I had it here (had already swept it out) - and couldn't figure out how to put it back in when I realized I had to buy our tickets quickly because all the flights were selling out..

That would have been a nice cash-back for me - over $600 in plane tickets!!

I tried to look at the Paypal site but it appeared to me that if I redeposited the money it would just go into a regular Paypal account and not be useable as a "charge"..

Double dang !!!!

Hope it's OK for me to just jump in here (but after lurking for so long, it really doesn't seem like jumping in!). To be honest, I had forgotten about this web site until I started searching for tips and suggestions for an upcoming WDW trip. Little did I know I would learn about Brita water bottles (and where to find them--which I did!) as well as selling on Ebay. I'm so glad I "accidentally" found this thread. It's been encouraging to read about how everyone is doing--so much so that I have decided to take the plunge, too! The enthusiam on this board has made it possible for me to just take a deep breath and go for it.

I haven't listed anything yet (still waiting to tie up a few loose ends). For the past several years, I've been buying on Ebay, and I have a number of positive feedbacks, which I hope will be a plus when I start selling. I upgraded my Paypal account so I can accept credit cards, and I've been approved for the debit card (still waiting to receive it though).

I've been reading and reading the posts on this thread, and unfortunately, I haven't been able to make it through all of them yet, so if this question has been asked before, I apologize. What is the ruling regarding sales tax? Do I have to collect it if I sell to someone in my home state? Ebay isn't a business for me, just a way to hopefully supplement my Disney vacation fund. I don't want to goof up just when I'm getting started. I'm one of those obsessive-compulsives who wants to do everything right the first time (and I usually drive myself crazy in the process!).

I apologize for the length of my post, but I just wanted everyone to know how much their information has helped me. Best of luck to all of you and thanks so much for all the advice you have provided!

Party at my house anyone:) ;) ? I thought selling alcohol would be a no-no. I opened one up and boy is that stuff strong someone would have to have a stomach of steel to drink that stuff:eek:.
Mrs. Snowgod thanks for the information. I'll definately sign up to get the interest on the balance.
C.Ann don't you just hate it when you find out about stuff after the fact. If I would of known about the debit card sooner I would of bought our AP's with it that would of been quite the chunk of change:) O'well live and learn!
Thanks.

Welcome!!

What is the ruling regarding sales tax?

In most states, if you sell something that is bought and shipped within your state, you owe sales tax. I've done a lot of searching on this in my books and on line (income and sales tax on eBay and garage sale items) the past couple of weeks, and discussed it at length with a couple of enrolled agents, a couple of people who are involved with starting small businesses, other friends who are tax preparers (good time of year for these discussions, as many have time to search), and I stand by that (interesting part is..a freind who is a CPA didn't know and really doesn't care LOL!). I can find nothing other than opinions saying you don't have to pay either tax...however....

Does the government go after you when you sell items that have been in your house (versus buying items and then reselling them)...not that I have found. Unless you have a jealous neighbor or friend who reports you, the IRS doesn't seem interested in trying to tax you on your own (reasonable amount of) items sold on eBay (sales or income). Can they if they want to? Yes. Can yo be fined by your state (for not paying sales tax), or charged with fraud by the IRS (for not paying income tax)..yes. Will they? Prob not. Just a note..eBay makes no secret of the fact that they do keep your sales records and will turn them over to the IRS if asked. I can get you that info if someone wants it..I did post it much earlier in this thread.

If you make crafts, buy wholesale to resell, etc, then yes, you need to file for a resale cert in your state, and pay sales tax. If you make this a business, then you need to pay sales tax. Only you can decide (and you should make that decision privately..not on a public board) if you will claim this income and file a schedule C to subtract your costs.

More info than you asked for I know..but the two always end up connected.

Doris

Some of them are pretty old and are stilled sealed with the alcohol in them.

I believe he can if he's selling for the decanter and not the alcohol. I also believe they can't be shipped air, unless you follow the PO rules for leakage. I think you would be interested in the second section..if you haven't already drank all the profits LOL!!

Here is what I found:

eBay Policy:
Due to the many difficulties inherent in Internet alcohol sales, eBay will not permit the listings of wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages on its website.

eBay Policy:
There may be instances where the particular collectible container is unopened and still contains an alcoholic beverage. The sale of collectible containers will be permitted so long as each of the following are met:
The value of the auctioned item is in the collectible container, not its contents. Thus, bottles of wine are not permitted because their value is based on the wine in the bottle, and not the bottle itself.
The auction description should state that the container has not been opened, but that any incidental contents are not intended for consumption.
The item must not be available at any retail outlet, and the container must have a value that substantially exceeds the current retail price of the alcohol in the container.
Sellers should take steps to ensure that the buyer of these collectibles is of lawful age in the buyer and seller's jurisdiction (generally 21 years old). Buyers and sellers must ensure that the sale complies with all applicable laws and shipping regulations in carrying out the transaction.

eBay is, however, a forum for the sale of alcohol-related collectibles, including alcohol-related memorabilia, packaging and containers such as bottles, decanters or limited edition cans (provided you comply with the above policies), which are not subject to the same legal constraints.

Exception: Select sellers on Sothebys.com and Live Auctions are permitted to sell wine. These listings will appear on the eBay website

Hello,

I must say this thread has gotten me re-energized about making some dough on ebay. (In fact, I just applied to a position that would be selling overstock on ebay.) It took me a few days to read the 100+ pages that C. Ann's little lesson started and I know it was worth it, I've learned many new tips. So thanks a bunch.

I have a delimma I would like some input on. I'd rather the buyer pay exact shipping than give a fixed price that might be over or under the real costs. I have been listing items without providing a shipping cost. Instead I put this line in:

Buyer will pay shipping via USPS Priority mail with insurance and delivery confirmation to your zone within the US. Actual shipping and insurance will be based on current USPS.com rates. I am shipping from the 89052 zip code if you would like to do your own calculation.

I am thinking of adding either or both of the following:

1) The exact weight of the item packaged for shipping. This would require some work on my part to package and weight the item prior to listing.

2) An approximate shipping cost based on my guessed weight and shipping to zone 8.

Any one encountering this problem or care to share some more advice?
