You HAVE to try this!! EBAY your way to DISNEY Part 2!!!!

therefore - is $300 enough to change the amount of taxes owed?

Yes, but it depends on various factors, the most important being the costs you have incurred in earning the $300 (product cost, etc.). If you earn $300 on ebay, but you have documented costs related to that of $200, you owe income tax on $100 (unless your filing status & gross income fall within certain limits that exclude you from filing at all).

Always comes when I have to use the auction format, since I"m off to Disney!

But for the rest of you:

This has been discussed before..I don't see why it has to be a debate. We are all grownups. If you usually report all yoru income, this will be reported. If not, well, it's your choice, just like your other income and deductions. As mentioned in the past on the first thread...I wouldn't post on a public board that I made such and such selling on eBay, but I'm not going to report it. And then give your eBay ID LOL!

I don't foresee the IRS getting records from Ebay and going after those people.

eBay is already willingly giving up those records..but it's been (at least the people I know of) because of other circumstances. Large deposits to your bank accounts, income being checked because of an audit, someone reporting a "friend".
therefore - is $300 enough to change the amount of taxes owed?

Yes, it could be...but if you are worried, the amount is not large, and I would just report it...wouldn't make that much of a difference.

If you earn $300 on ebay, but you have documented costs related to that of $200, you owe income tax on $100 (unless your filing status & gross income fall within certain limits that exclude you from filing at all).

Just to clarify this a little. You not only have to have documented costs (assuming you feel inclined to report the income), but you have to fill out a schedule C..you can't just say..I collected $300, and my expenses were $200, so I'm going to put down I made $100. You have to actually show those expenses.

Well.....I won't have to worry about taxes at all since I'm not getting bids!!! I know - I know - patience till the last few hours. Hard though with 27 auctions going and only one getting bids!!! Have some watchers though!!

I had somebody contact me about shipping an item to Australia. I don't mind doing it, since they want to know all charges. It was nice of him to email prior to bidding!
The item weighs 2 1/2 pounds and is very fragile so it will reguire heavy duty packing. The piece is 10 /1/2" tall and about 6" wide.
It would be going to Syndey. Could somebody who ships internationally help me out here. I tried to look it up, but I think I was doing it wrong because the amount was incredible.
Thanks so much!

Hi phorsenuf,

I work for the USPS so I was able to pull this up in our computers here... Based on the dimensions you gave, your package should fall into these rates. Keep in mind shipping to Australia is always VERY expensive, since its so far away and an isolated island. Be aware that based on the size of the box you use to package the item, you might not be able to send it Letterpost and might need to send it the more expensive Parcelpost. if you have any questions, feel free to email me!

Global Express Mail (EMS) 3 - 5 Days $28.00 Max. length 36", max. length plus girth 79"
Airmail Letter Post 4 - 7 Days $20.30 Max. length 24", Max. length, height, depth combined 36"
Economy (Surface) Letter Post 4 - 6 Weeks $9.05 Max. length 24", Max. length, height, depth combined 36"

WOW! thanks for that info! How would I determine the difference between letterpost and parcel?

I just got my first neutrals!!

I left her positive response - and I got neutrals!! I bought 3 sundresses - separate auctions - asked if she would combine shipping - she said sure!! Got my invoice - she charged me $8.50 for shipping!! I left positive feedback - saying - nice dresses - high shipping - watch out.

Oh well, I guess they weren't negative, but I thought that was RUDE!!

Thanks for listening to the vent.

I'm editing this post to add the comment I received from her this morning...

"On small items like these, any money made on ebay is generally on shipping."

I didn't know that! I guess I'll have to revise the way I do my auctions - and state - "Here is the item I want to sell, it's not worth much and I know it won't make me very much money - so I think I will charge you an outrageous cost for shipping!! Thanks for Looking!"

Some people! Jeez!

Since ebay switched to the new invoicing, is anyone else not getting invoices like they used to? My billing date is the end of the month and I used to have my invoice about a week in to the new month. I have yet to received an invoice for May's fees, and last month they debited my checking account later than usual. I haven't seen mesages on ebay that there are problems, so I wonder if it's just me who's having issues.

I rec'd an email that the billing is forthcoming, it is just late this month due to some technical problems. If you want to read more about it, go to Community-Discussion Board-Technical Issues. You will see some billing threads there including updates.

It's incredibly quiet, isn't it? I poked around a few times the last few days to see if my ISP was blocking notification emails again, but it's just been very quiet!

Hope it means everyone is busy successfully eBaying or having a wonderful time at WDW!

Feeling a little bummed...I've decided to call it quits with selling at ebay. After reading so much about how you have to report everything in your taxes and that you should have a merchant's certificate to collect sales tax, I decided I didn't want to bother with it. I just want to sell stuff...not make it a "federal case". :( So I guess I'm going to be able to catch up on all that reading I've been meaning to get to.

Ha

I received an email in my hotmail account today (I only use it for MSN Messenger) from "ebay":

Dear eBay customer,

During our regularly scheduled account maintenance and verification procedures, we have detected a slight error in your billing information.

This might be due to either of the following reasons:

1. A recent change in your personal information ( i.e.change of address).
2. Submiting invalid information during the initial sign up process.
3. An inability to accurately verify your selected option of payment due to an internal error within our processors.

Please update and verify your information by clicking the link below:

I've been around long enough to know this is not a valid request from eBay. Besides this isn't even the email address linked to my ebay account. I found it humorous.

They must be sending these out in large numbers today because i rec'd this one and another similar one, both asking for billing info. updates. What made me laugh was the spelling and punctuation, you could tell they didn't know the English language too well. I'm so tempted to send them back and say "nice try" but i just send on to ebay and delete them.

How does one search for ended auctions to see what prices things sold for....I thought someone mentioned doing this...I can't figure out how...

Thanks

When you go to the search function there is a small link that says "Advanced Search". Go into there and select your criteria, such as completed auctions (includes items that sold and didn't sell). I haven't used it in a while, so I don't remember all of the details.

Post back if you have difficulties and I'll log onto eBay and check it out.

I think I have started reading this thread too late:crazy: I just put items up for sale on ebay for the first time today. I was hoping to make a little money to stash away for the four WDW trips I've got planned over the next two years, but, WOW it looks like it may be more trouble than its worth.

My plan was to put these few things on for auction, with min bids that covered my purchase cost if any, see how it goes before putting anything else on. What do you think? I've been cruisng the Disney search and see Lots and Lots of items without bids at all. I hadn't noticed that before. Are we at a shopping lull?

I bought like crazy for about six weeks and then just stopped. Had to my DH was going to kill me.

Any advice for a newbie ebay seller would be appreciated.
