You (And George Bush) Should Read This

Veto veto I say!
So are you saying that you are disappointed with President Bush's refusal to veto any spending bills that have come across his desk? Do you think that President Bush has shown an error in judgement and has been fiscally irresponsible by not using his Constitutional right to veto careless spending?

Sensible Democratic and Bipartisan sponsored bills don't even make it out of committee!
When Dems are telling Republicans to stop spending so many tax dollars on social programs, you know for sure you've entered Bushworld...

Just a small point to the poster who claimed the federal deficit was so large partially because "we rebuilt NY"

As far as I know Georgie promissed big bucks to rebuild one small building complex in NY, but even that never wholly came through. Only a percentage of the promissed money was ever apportioned for the WTC, but hey, let's not forget the bridge to nowhere. Now that was an important project.

If the spending is careless, it should be vetoed. I'm disappointed in governemnent spending almost every year of the last several decades. Since the beginning of time, everyone seems to enjoy spending other people's money.

I really haven't kept track of individual spending bills. I just hear all the "pork" stories.

I would start with selling those thousands of unused trailers and mobile homes that FEMA's got stockpiled and rusting away. And how about forcing our good friend China to remedy those trade discrepancies and letting us sell some of our stuff over there. Everything here is Made In China. Turnabout is fair play. Or is it enough that they are underwriting our debt?
I seem to remember Republicans in the 80's complaining that the trade imbalance with Japan was bound and determined to be the undoing of America and everything she stands for...now they claim that China gobbling up T-bills like they were going out of style and buying America on the cheap is good for the economy and a-ok...I just don't get it?!?!

You can't just come out and say anything negative about President Bush, even if you completely disagree with his actions, can you Joe?

Me either. Maybe someone can fill us in. :confused3

I read things on other web sites that President Bush is pushing the national debt up to 8 trillion dollars and that President Clinton left with no debt.. in fact he left a surplus. People really get deficit and debt mixed up. (even me being as smart as I am had to brush up ..it been years and many brain cells since grad school)

interesting gov web site:

Public Debt

I do remember President Clinton actually paid down the national debt with the budget surplus…which was nice of him. :teeth:

What is the difference between the debt and the deficit?

The deficit is the fiscal year difference between what the United States Government (Government) takes in from taxes and other revenues, called receipts, and the amount of money the Government spends, called outlays. The items included in the deficit are considered either on-budget or off-budget. (The off-budget items are typically comprised of the two Social Security trust funds, old-age and survivors insurance and disability insurance, and the Postal-Service fund.) Generally, on-budget outlays tend to exceed on-budget receipts, while off-budget receipts tend to exceed off-budget outlays.

You can think of the total debt as accumulated deficits plus accumulated off-budget surpluses. The on-budget deficits require the Treasury to borrow money to raise cash needed to keep the Government operating. We borrow the money by selling Treasury securities like T-bills, notes, bonds and savings bonds to the public. Additionally, the Government Trust Funds are required by law to invest accumulated surpluses in Treasury securities. The Treasury securities issued to the public and to the Government Trust Funds (Intragovernmental Holdings) then become part of the total debt.

And I remember the days when Democrats didn't give a whit about deficits, now they're a rallying cry.

Of course you "get" it....it's politics. Full of hypocrisy, on both sides.

So the answers to our fiscal problems from the 3 last Republican posters are:

Joe: poor President Bush is just part of a government machine and won't veto irrational spending bills because that just how government has been for decades...poor us!!

charlie,nj: President Clinton only presented us with a balanced budget, really didn't solve the deficit, so who cares if Bush tanks a surplus...

Bet: Politics is full of hypocracy so what are you gonna do...

I'm sorry, I though the Republicans like to descibe themselves as the "ideas" Party...guess that was some other guys...

When Ken Lay, Exxon Mobils's CEO, and Carl Ichan make out their checks, so will I.

They're not castigating Bush for the rising deficit. You are.

You keep talking about the "mess" this country is in because of President Bush. Sure, every year of every decade, there is room for some improvement, but what mess?? I wouldn't want to live in any other country. I'm excited about this country's future (despite the libs).
Hey everybody, if my head isn't buried in this hole, it's buried in that hole. The only thing that is disturbing my perfect life is all those liberals yammering on about this and that. Not that I care, but I can hear them droning on even with my head buried firmly in my hole. Honestly, how is someone supposed to go about ignoring what's going on in their country with all those evil liberal types nattering on like that.

So liberals, stop with the dissent. Can't you see I'm trying to pretend everything is alright here.

So the folks that don't give a hoot about the deficit shouldn't have a conscience about lowering it?

Why the drastic extremes, MossMan? Things are by no means perfect, nor are they a complete disaster. Why is that so hard to admit?

Again, with the extremes! Geez! I'm not saying I don't give a hoot about it. I certainly don't think deficits are a good thing. But as they presently stand, they're not going to ruin us.

The comment was not made at you personally. Sorry if you took it as such. I was speaking in generalities. :)

No apology necessary. I didn't take it personally. I'm just trying to point out a trend I see in this thread, and in all the Bush/political threads. Bush supporters are accused of sticking their heads in the sand and drinking the Koolaid and never admitting he could be wrong on anything. I don't see it. :confused3

What I do see is a highly partisan opposition that blames every single failing of the United States, past, present, and future, on this particular President. It's bizzare!

Putting aside the arguments as to why folks think this way, I think this man just seems to polarize hatred. But so did President Clinton. I can't recall seeing this much hatred that people have had for these last two Presidents than any other past President in my memory, even Nixon. Unless you want to count Dawn's love for President Carter ;) .
