The place, not the song :D Are any of you members? I'm looking for swim classes and was reading about the Y. If you are a member it's about $70 cheaper per 2 week session! If you are members what do you like/not like?

I am not a member but I am currently looking into swim lessons for DD... I have found that our park district is far cheaper...

we've been members since last year and I really like it .

Ours is a brand new state of the art facility so that makes it nice too.

Price is reasonable, the people are great, and the equipment is well taken care of but Im not sure this holds true for all of the YMCAs through the country.

Lifelong Y member here

Kids take lessons
we use the pool all the time
summer camp much cheaper and better

:D

Well I just found out their childcare is only until age 5, and yet they can't be unattended until age 12. That wouldn't do me much good if I wanted to lift weights are do a yoga class :(

DH is a member. He likes that he can save some $ by being an off-hours member. This means he doesn't use it at peak times such as early morning or lunch hour, but he can use it almost any other time including weekends.

its fun to stay at the YMCA...., Oh great this is a living hell cant get them out of my mind. Macho Macho Man, I want to be a Macho man....

I worked at one for almost four years.. so by default I was a member as well.

My Y, was a 200 year old mansion converted into a YMCA some 30 years ago.

The facility had two indoor pools, one indoor hot tub, four outdoor pools (one with a fun type wet n wild type slide, and one with a "kiddie" slide).

As for lessons, I was involved with the gym and swim lessons for years. The price was much less than say a swim club (club just devoted toswimming) or even the township lessons.

As for the quality of teachers, sometimes it was hit or miss. It all depended on the type of teacher, and the type of class. I would only put my daughter in classes with more mature teachers.. although some parents would not have a problem with the younger teachers...

I am not a member but I have started the swim classes for my 5 yr old dd this summer. Here the NON members pay $34 for each 2 week session (mon-thur) and $17 for the 4 sat. classes.

I think I will sign her up for the next session of the daily classes if there are any openings. She really loved her first class this past Sat.

Lisa, how old is your child/children? And does your Y have a game room/activity room for kids older than 5?

Our Y also has an age limit on childcare, and a restriction on leaving them unattended. But that just means you can't just drop them off at the facility unattended. You might want to check it out to see if they have somewhere for older kids to hang out, while you take a class or work out.

I've been a member of our local Y for 15 years and a volunteer on the Metro board of directors for 11 years. It's a great organization and I've had some wonderful experiences as a member and as a volunteer.

Binny, every Y is autonomous, so yes, there's a lot of variety across the country, as far as facilities and programs.

and love the pool are they just redid our we have 3 pools 2 lap and a family pool the family pool is nice, it starts out at 0 feet and then it gets deeper there is a big slide and a baby slide, a basketball hoop, two water spots, and a lily pad area ((you can walk across) All the pools are in doors

There is a family locker room, a men and a womens ( a spa in each) and a locker room for boys and girls teenager,

WE have a rock wall the Randy Travis Fitness Center and indoor walking track. Two basketball areana one for adults and one for familys.

The basement area is just for kids the have a fitness center, a gameroom a basketball area, and a snack bar..

Everyone that works there is very helpful. in if you have trouble with paying for in the United Way will help pay. the YMCA and them go almost Hand in Hand/

Macho Macho Man, I want to be a Macho man....

Ooooohhhhh, Daddy - ya can't get any more macho than, you, babee!!;) :p

Back on the thread subject : We always utilized the community park lessons that were held at the University as we have no Y in our town.
