YIKES......our computer has a virus!!!!

I have a side business that focuses on computer repair.. we use the following:

start computer in safemode, run rkil.exe, then run:

malwarebytes
spybot s&d
combofix (only in extreme situations)
hijackthis
rootkit
microsoft security essentials (for daily monitoring)

I had the Windows Security 2010 virus last week...pops up that your pc is in danger, click to remove virus and my DD fell for it...looks so much like Windows Defender...it was baaaaad. Malwarebytes got rid of it once I was able to get online to download it.
I ran a full scan with McAfee and it didn't detect it.

I got this one yesterday, blech. Fortunately I was able to get AVG running this morning and it quarantined it.

I vote for AVG. I've been using it for years and I've never had a virus or anything terrible happen to my PC.

For some reason I could not install AVG. That is the reason that went with Avast and it works great.

One thing that needs to be noted is, this isn't a virus, but is malware or spyware. That is probably why many antivirus programs do not catch it and programs like Malwarebytes and Superantispyware are needed to fix it.

Viruses are detrimental to a computer system. Malware and spyware are only annoyances (detrimental to your sanity, but not to the computer.)
