Yikes-my union voted to strike!!!

I don't believe you can oursource shortbun's job to China! Isn't she a schoolbus driver?

I have not idea what her job is. It would seem that many would be willing to drive a schoolbus in this economy. I know that the OP is not for the strike but she may pay a huge price it they do stike.

Question -- if someone goes out on strike, do they get unemployment or does the union pay them? What about health insurance payments?

Yikes a strike in this economy is a bad idea. I'm not in a union but if I was I would HATE to have my contract up for negotiations right now. There really isn't anything to negotiate with. You can't really ask for larger saleries since even people with fantastic jobs aren't getting raises at the moment.

If you're a school teacher there just isn't any money in a lot of states to raise saleries or benefits. In our state property taxes pay for schools and teachers and with a lot of people loosing their houses there isn't enough tax money coming in.

You don't get unemployment because collectively you "choose" to strike. There is usually a strike fund. When DH's old company went on strike they had to be on strike for a certain amount of time before the payments kicked in and they were a fraction of what his paycheck was.

Good luck to you OP, hope everything works out.

Yeah, well, I AM a school bus driver and my union includes the food service workers, custodians, educational assistants, secretaries and some other smaller groups. A CDL for school bus requires special education and testing and in Ohio there are even more hoops to jump=finger printing, background tests, drug testing...you can't just walk in and say, "I'll drive the bus!"
The School Board really disrespected us in this negotiation. We waited 5 years since our last raise and supported the levy just passed last year with the verbal promise of a good contract. Instead, we got a kick in the pants. I was willing to shrug it off but many were not. I don't blame them. The head of the union has not turned in our intent to strike as of today. I'm hoping that means there is some conversation going on.

We(teacher union) just settled a contract. Very sad. .02% year 1 and .03% year 2, nothing on health insurance. THat's it for money. We did get a few language things but nothing great! Allot of un happy people but it passed. We live to fight another day. We also saved our steps and lanes but they will be gone with our next contract. THey only benefit the younger teachers but someone fought for me when I was a young teacher and I will fight for them at a cost to me. I am happy for my union support and am very glad to have it.

I am unemployed and I would never want to drive a schoolbus! No offense to the OP - I completely respect her for her profession because it's not easy. What I'm saying is that just because somebody is unemployed doesn't mean that they will take any job that may be out there.

Lol, DisneyGirl, it isn't an easy job and imagine doing it in a huge inner-urban school system. We get little respect but I'm glad to see you have some for me. I'll take all I can get.

A lot of Education Support Professionals are not making a living wage, and it's shameful how school departments try to balance their budgets on their backs. Shortbun-I'm sending you a pm.

You have my total respect! I can imagine that you go home with some interesting stories though! LOL! My twin teaches in an inner city school and some of the stories she has...wow!

Best of luck with the outcome!
