Yikes!!! Found a bat in my garage

What do I do?!?!?! Call animal control? I came back from getting the kids from school and as I drove into the garage I glanced over and saw something just hanging mid wall on the concrete wall. I walked over and low and behold - BAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is probably just looking for a warm place. Whatever you do, don't hurt it! I would call your village/town hall and ask who can remove it for you.

I think the real question is whether it's wooden or metal. Those metal bats are much more dangerous.

I would call your local wildlife services and ask them for advice.

If I were in your shoes, I'd leave it alone. Bats are good animals..they eat bad bugs.

You must be in a warmer climate, huh? My suggestion would be to wait until dark tonigh, open the garage door, and turn on the light. I bet the thing will fly right out.

We had one fly into our house and land on top of the kitchen cabinets. We just threw a towel over it and tossed it out. I should clarify - my DH did that - I just watched! I don't know if that was a smart idea but it worked.

My sister called me one time from our parents house where she was hiding under the table because a bat got in. I told her to call her friend who was near by and the two of them shewed it out.

We have a lot of bats around here. When we sit outside at night we watch them flying around and I occasionally get buzzed by them because I am a misquito magnet. They swoop by me and grab their dinner before I become dinner for it! I guess I have an affinity for them.

As for the poster that said don't hurt it - I am not going close enough to do ANYTHING to that thing!!!

I called the Police Department - they said to leave the door open and pray it leaves - how will I know if it's gone and not just hiding somewhere where I just can't see it?!?!?!?

I read that a bat eats 10,000 mosquitos a night. I thought that number was high so I checked

Many bats can eat up to half their weight in food in a single night. One little brown bat can eat more than 600 mosquitoes in a single hour.

We used to go camping at Yellowstone Lake State Park, Wisconsin. They have 36 bat houses. You could sit by the fire after dark without having to put on mosquito spray. Niiiiiiiiiiice!

Seriously my bil had bats(yes more than 1) They called an exterminator that specialized in bat removal. I don't know the details cause just writing this out is giving me the willies.

Send it down to Austin. We like bats here. The largest colony of Mexican Freetail bats in north America lives under a bridge downtown. Every night a big crowd gathers to watch thousands and thousand of bats pour out from under the bridge to go mosquito hunting. Its one of our biggest tourist attractions.

Leave the door open and the light out and it should leave at dusk---But plug up around the door to your house so it can't get in--their bones are collapsible and they can fit thru the tiniest crack

Tomorrow or after it's gone--sit in your garage with the lights out and see if you can see light coming in thru any cracks--FILL THOSE CRACKS!!!

We had a coven in our basement and I am terrified of them--was not good.
dang rats with wings and pointy teeth and pointy ears and those claw things on their wings bbbwwaaeehh cannot stand them.

Oh and if an exterminator says he will hang these nylons full of moth balls as a deterrent---say yourself the charge--nothing deters them except the opening covers.

oh and have your DH go thru your garage before you fill the cracks to make sure there is no more.

I will warn you that if you call animal control, they will kill it. We had two bats in my parents house, the first one everyone went nuts and we finally caught the poor thing with a butterfly net, we carefully put it in a coffee can and left it outside for animal control. They picked it up and called us a couple weeks later to tell us they destroyed it to test it for rabies - it was negative. I felt horrible, the poor thing was trying so hard to just get outside. The second one we opened a window and kind of chased it around the room until it found its way out.

I agree with opening the garage door at night - that is when they hunt so it will want to get outside at night.

Don't know where you live but I'll tell you that we've had a population of bats test positive for rabies in our area of Houston. A teenager died last spring of rabies after a rabid bat got into his room and bit him while he slept. Having said that, most bats are not rabid and are very helpful in controlling the insect population. If I were you I'd take the suggestion of leaving the door open in hopes that'll fly out and find the crack where it's entering and seal it. I'd maybe call the Center for Disease Control (?) and see what the stats are for rabid bats in your area and if it's high I'd be on the lookout to see if it acts funny-like flying around during the day or acting loopy. I am freaking out. I had just opened the garage door and pulled in - got the kids out of the car (8,5 and 3) and looked up and saw something - looked weird because it was just in the middle of the wall so stupid me walks closer to get a look - I was only about 2 feet away before I realized what the heck it was!!!!

I ran screaming GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT (Have you ever seen a 36 year old fat woman run like a scared little girl- not pretty!) - scared the crapola out of my poor kids of course..

Now I am just freaking out knowing that it's IN THERE! - I have the door open - but how will I know if it's GONE - it could have just moved?? It's a GARAGE which means there's tons of crap in there- it could hide anywhere and when I least suspect it BOOM - it could be coming after me.

Part of me thinks the way I am behaving is a riot because it's IS just a tiny bat and I do have the ability to realize I am panicing but O!M!G!!!!!!! I hate creatures!!!!!!!!

I just called DH again and told him he just has to leave work now and get this thing out....
