You guys are my "go to" group for answering these complex questions:

For our trip in July, we want to book now in order to grab some low SW fares that were just released. I have a group of 5 people but I only have enough SW points for 3 of the RT tickets. My eldest daughter is graduating HS and will be going to college in August and based on her summer job plans, I would consider her "iffy" for the trip. My younger daughter wants to bring a friend but we have not worked out all the details yet so again uncertainty.

So, I would like use points to buy both my daughters and friend's flights so that if we cancel, the points just go back to me. And then pay cash for me and my girlfriend because we know we will be traveling again in the next year and will easily be able to use the $$ if we had to cancel/re-schedule.

Can this be done on one ressie even if only one (say my eldest daughter) needs to cancel? Should I book them all seperately? Usually i book only one ways to make it easier to rebook if one direction goes down and the other goes up. Can I book R/T's?

Thoughts? HELP!!

TIA

Yet another SWA answer :)...

When you book with points everyone you use the points to purchase tickets for will each get a separate confirmation number. So if you need to cancel someone reservation it won't interfere with everyone else. Now this does not mean you have to book all of the tickets separately. You can still put in your travel dates and the number of tickets you want to purchase and when the transaction is complete you will get individual confirmation number.

I just did this last night. I booked 2 r/t tickets and each of us got separate confirmation numbers. Well last night I want to change my travel date and it did not interfere with the other person ticket.

OK thanks. So I still need to book the 2 cash tickets separately? Correct? And what about one ways vs. round trips? If the price of one direction goes down and the other goes up can you rebook just the section that goes down if you book it as a r/t?

Thanks again!!

The cash tickets can be bought together. And yes I would do one way tickets for the cash tickets.

So for you and the girlfriend put in your travel dates for your trip down with a quantity of 2.
Then do the same thing for your return trip. You will then get one confirmation number for your trip down and one for you return trip but the confirmation number will have both your name and the girlfriends name.
