DH and I are looking into joining DVC, but are cuious about how the points work for other resorts. For instance if we wanted to stay at the Contempory or Pop, is there a set number of points per night like the DVC resorts?

There are points charts for the non-DVC WDW resorts. However, unlike the DVC resorts, the points needed for a stay at the non-DVC resorts can and do change on an annual basis. They almost always increase.

Only the points needed for the DVC resorts will be held constant** - no guarantees for any other option. It's why the best value of a DVC point is using it to stay at a DVC resort.

** Technically, the total number of points required to reserve evey room in a DVC resort for every night of the year cannot change. DVC may reallocate within the year or between unit types/sizes, but if one area increases, another must decrease so that the total remains constant. Reallocation as described has only happened once so far - not too long after OKW opened.

Best wishes -

You can't use DVC points at Value resorts. Besides, it's not cost effective.

I didn't think a Value would make much sense. DH would love to stay at the Contemporary. But if the points change each year, it seems like a waste when we could stay in a bigger room at a DVC resort.

You can use the points for stays in any resort except the values.

The point costs for other resorts besides the DVC resorts are not as good...you end up using a lot of points for a "regular" hotel room, as opposed to using fewer points for the larger DVC resort units.

They are your points and you can use them as you wish, but the best use of points is for DVC resorts.

I think that a room at the contemporary is like 29 points a night in the value season for a standard wing room. To stay at a dvc resortit would be anywhere from 8-12 points per night for a studio. That is a big difference when it comes to using your points.

Wow! I knew it would be higher but I had no idea it was that different.

It wasn't always like this. When I first became interested in DVC, the 2001 point charts weren't too bad at the other resorts. In fact Mary Waring (mousesavers.com) used to suggest that people rent DVC points in order to use them at non-DVC resorts! But the 2002 point charts showed a major increase, so that using DVC points at $10 each was roughly equivalent to rack rates plus tax. Perhaps this change was designed to discourage people from renting for use at non-DVC resorts.

But of course it also has effect of discouraging DVC members from using points in this way. Today it is almost impossible to save money at non-DVC resorts by renting points.

If you take stock in rumors, there very well could be a Contemporary DVC here in the next few years, so you may very well be able to trade in at a good bargain.

The Disneyland Specials are pretty good right now. I did the racks vs points at $10 pp and it came off as better with the points.

If we're being technical, :teeth: you cannot use points to stay at any of the value resorts, the Beach Club (but the Yacht Club is allowed) , the Boardwalk Inn or the Wilderness Lodge.

I heard something about that, but I won't dare say anything to DH. I know he would want to wait. He is still having trouble understanding that we can stay at other resorts and the points stay pretty close to our home resort.

Plus there's no guarantee for the future or that the program will even continue though I think most expect it will.

My parents took my sister and her 3 kids to WDW this past week. They stayed in the North Wing. They were told by multiple people working on site that this was likely the last year for that building, it would be torn down and timeshares would replace it.

Does anyone know if any of the rehab that is going on right now has affect the North Wing? If it hasn't, I would say it further substantiates the rumor that we'll see DVC at CR.

Can I get on a waitlist right now for 50 add on points there? :cool1:
