Yet another points transfer question

I *think* I know the answer but it's all a little confusing.

Here's the situation: we had a reservation that used banked points from last year (184), current year's points (200) and borrowed points from next year (17).

Well due to job loss we had to cancel the reservation. All 401 points were placed back in this use year's account (Oct 2010). 200 of those we were allowed to proceed with banking, and we have done. Leaves me with 201 points in this use year's account. I understand that points from cancelled reservations go right back in to the year in which they were used regardless of the year in which they were taken from.

Can these points be transferred to another member? I'm looking to do something with these points but don't want to go through the whole process of making a reservation for someone else with these points. Just don't have the time to deal with that right now. I was wondering if a transfer is even possible?

If a transfer isn't possible, does anyone know if there is a charity I can donate them to?

Neither banked nor borrowed points can be transferred and effect of your cancellation is to leave those points as banked and borrowed. To rent them you would need to make reservation in another person's name and thus deal with any matters that might arise with such reservation.

The points you have left cannot be transferred to another account, but are certainly rentable. One use I've thought of if you want to donate is to make a reservation and donate that reservation to a school for their auction. This is then tax deductible. If you would like to do that, I'm more than happy to offer my school as a benefactor. :yay:

Thanks...that's what I thought.

Anyone know of charities that I might be able to work with to get them to? Does DVC have a charitable organization they work with and I can just "give" them my points?

Points that are in banked or borrowed status cannot be transferred to another person. S unfortunately, they will have to be used prior to the end of the use year that contained the canceled vacation.

Perhaps someone else will know about a charity. You would have to make a reservation to donate as points are of no value to non-members.

Other possible options for to use those points:

For something closer to home - check out the "Collections". You'll have to pay a $95 fee and this won't be available to you once you are within the last four months of your use year.

Consider trading for something via RCI. If you are making a late deposit, your selections will be limited, but if you can find something, at least the points won't expire. You might be able to pick something and then arrange to donate or give it away if you can't use it yourself.

I do not know of possible charities but understand that will not actually change the issue you are trying to avoid. Charity would not actually gain ability to deal with points since you are the owner and only one permitted to make reservations. In essence, you would still have to make a reservation in another's name and deal with the reservation.

Yeah I realize I would still have to make the reservation. Still debating....

Hopefully the job situation will change soon and we would be able to take some sort of small vacation of some sort later in the summer.

Thanks everyone for the input and advice! Much appreciated!
