Okay, on a call to MS last year, a CM told me that points borrowed from a following year cannot be returned to the year they were borrowed from. I understand that and have no confusion on that issue.

In a post sometime in the last 6 months, DOC made reference to the following scenario. (point amounts are for example only)

1. 150 point left in current use year, 10 months left in use year.
2. Desire ressies at 11 month window requiring 220 points.
3. Borrow 70 points from following year and make ressie.
4. At 7 months check other resorts and find availability, same room types, lower points.
5. Direct MS to cancel original ressie, apply the borrowed point first and then any current use year points to new ressie.
6. Bank remaining current use year points into the following year (following the limit at 6 months).

Did I understand this correctly:confused:
Did I miss something from the original post:confused:
Somehow this seems to go against the rules, but if it does not I will use it next month.

Thanks in advance for helping me see the light.

PS: In spite of all the worry and angst over our trip last week, we had a great time and are extremely pleased with VWL.

Yes, you understood correctly. I've not done this myself, but several posters have reported that they have done so.

Hope you get the ressies you want at the 7 month window. Either way, I'm sure you'll have a good time!

One thing: if you only have 10 months left in your use year and you want to make reservations for 11 months out, you will need to bank the current year's points if you want to use them for that reservation. You need to use points that are available for when you are going, not when you make the reservation.

Yep, it's right as you're not trying to return any of the borrowed points back to their original year. As an example consider this:

200 point contract, all current year's points available.

Bank the 200 points into next year.
Something comes up and you would like to take a trip yet this year, so you borrow 100 points from next year for this year.

This is the same as your scenario except in reverse order: Bank, then borrow, while your example was borrow, then bank. Makes no difference. The points are all identified as to what year they belong to. You can bank current use year points into next year without any regard to any borrowing you do (or did) from next year.

The only rules to watch are the banking date limitations on current year points, and also that once banked or borrowed, those respective points cannot be returned to their original year.

For example, you can't bank 100 points from this year into next year, and then try to borrow those same 100 points back. Those 100 points are frozen into that new year. The only points you could borrow from that next year would be that year's actual use year points.

P.S., Tiggeriffic is correct about your example. Make certain you are borrowing or banking points into the actual use year that your vacation dates fall into. The points must be put into the year of the vacation itself, not into the year of the reservation.

Yes, the examples certainly are correct. When we purchased our resale last February, the seller had done exactly this for some reason, banking use year 2000 points and then borrowing all of the use year 2001 points for use during use year 2000. As a result, there were no current use year (2001) points available, but a nearly full complement of banked points from the previous year. We have to use these banked points by the end of next February and will get a full complement of 2002 use year points starting in March. This was no problem for us, since we were planning to visit WDW twice during the period when these banked points have to be used (last July and in Jan 2002). We had almost the exact number of points needed. I had to borrow 2 points from use year 2002 to complete the January reservation. As a result, we will take two trips during our 2001 use year using points from the use years before and after our visits, but none from the current year. We'll cycle into our points for 2002 use year with visits in March and June 2002. We still have 58 points uncommitted from that allotment that we're saving for a brief January 2003 visit.
