DH and I spent yesterday at Epcot. At 8:45 PM, we took a trip on the Rio Del Tiempo in Mexico (I just can't visit Epcot without going on the Mexico ride, and time was running out!).

As we floated by the restaurant seating area, we noticed one empty table right on the river. Other than that, the restaurant was absolutely PACKED even though Illuminations was getting ready to start. We were both hungry, and we looked at each other and said, "I wonder if....."

Next thing you know, there we were, seated next to the river and ordering our meals (we've seen Illuminations many times and weren't worried about missing it)! First of all, for anyone who has not been to Epcot yet, the Mexico restaurant has the most unique atmosphere of any restaurant in Epcot. You are dining under a deep blue twilight sky next to a river with boats continuously floating by. In front of you is a tall Incan (Mayan?) temple, an erupting volcano, and in the distance are Indian cliff dwellings and a horizon dotted with trees and an occasional house. Hanging over the landscape is one lone star.

The tables are draped with colorful Mexican textiles, and the chairs look hand-carved and hand painted. Behind you is a Mexican marketplace, complete with street musicians and singers.

DH ordered Pollo a las Rajas and I ordered the vegetarian combination plate (if you are vegetarian, be sure to ask for the vegetarian menu--there are only 2 items on it, but it is a separate menu that does not come with the regular menu). We joked that the waiter was running across the street to the Cantina (counter service) to grab our food and double the price. I had seen some pretty negative reviews of San Angel Inn's food, so I didn't know what to expect, but knew we would enjoy the atmosphere.

We were surprised and delighted to discover that our meals were nothing like what the Cantina serves (servicable but bland Tex/Mex). Our meals were both extremely tasty and well-spiced. We both cleaned our plates and enjoyed our meals immensely. We wouldn't hesitate to return again.

DH had a beer and I had a glass of wine, and with tax, our total came to $44 plus tip (we did order the two least expensive meals on the menu, not because we were trying to sve money but because they happened to be exactly what we wanted).

On our way out of Epcot at 9:45 (Epcot had closed a little after 9:00 PM, immediately after Illuminations ended), we were treated to one last show at the fountain (where the water is choreographed to music). It was fun walking through Epcot after it closed! There were still a few people around, but we felt very special, as if Epcot had stayed open a little later just for us. :cloud9:

Thanks for the review - it sounds like you had a wonderful meal! :)

My DH really wants to try this resturant I have been hesitant since we live in a large urban area with a HUGE array of Mexican resturants. I think that the more that I hear about it, the more I'm considering it.

Sounds like a great evening.

Most in my family love San Angel too.

Thanks for the review!

Thanks for the review! I was just saying to my DH the other night I wanted to try it here!! :)

Thanks for the review. I really like San Angel Inn (but find the Cantina to be inedible food).

Great review ~ Thanx for sharing.

What a great review! DH and I always get the vegetarian platter when we're there. We've dined both lunch and dinner there many times, but last month's lunch was the best overall experience yet! If you like spicy, ask your server for the spicier salsa. Our mouths were on fire but we couldn't stop eating it! :earboy2: MMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmm!!

Thanks for the colorful review! :sunny:

Thanks for the responses, everybody! DH keeps asking me--"Hasn't anybody responded with reviews of their own?" I would like to hear what dishes people liked or didn't like, and what makes you return to this restaurant...or how it ended up on your "never again" list!

OK, since you asked so nicely.... :)

I too, adore the atmosphere of this restaurant. It's been one I've dined at many, many times. In fact, this trip we started the trip with a very late dinner here and ended it that way as well. My favorite dish is the appetizer queso fundido - melted cheeses and chorizo (Mexican sausage). Generally I think that this is a good, but not great, restaurant. The food is overall good but nothing outstanding or truly inventive. I haven't tried the vegetarian menu - I'll have to try it next time.

I agree that the food is good, not great--I haven't found great food at Disney yet, but probably a big part of that is because most restaurants don't quite "get" vegetarian dishes--although I have to say DH has had rather spotty dining experiences as well (e.g, one great steak at Rainforest Cafe, one mediocre one; one great steak at Rose and Crown, one mediocre one).

We like the queso fundido as well. There is also a good dish I got one time that has a breast of chicken (with bone) served over chorizo and cheese and more chicken "morsels" (from what I remember the menu describing it as).
The food is good but the atmosphere is what keeps us coming back! Be careful though, after a long day at Epcot you can get kind of sleepy in there because it's pretty dark.
On another note, we are having a house built and want to convert our garage into some kind of bonus home movie theater/play room, I'd love to recreate the look of the inside of the San Angel even on a small scale (guess we'd really better start saving our money!)

We love that place! Your review literally brought tears to my eyes. I know it sounds crazy, but your description was so perfect and right on target. We ate there last year for our anniversary and the previous year for my birthday. I'm so glad we booked our annual summer trip last night b/c I want to be back there so badly. Our plans definitely include making PS to eat there again! Thanks for the great review! :sunny:

Great review - we always go to the San Angel Inn for lunch or early dinner and love the atmosphere/food - we have NEVER had good service there, did you encounter any problems??

Service was excellent--we did not have any problems at all.

What are the items that are on the vegetarian menu? Thanks in advance.
