Yes - you do need a passport - even if flying out of Buffalo

Just to finish this topic, I am flying Detroit to Orlando and crossing in Sarnia by car. If you think logically, customs will be at the border in Sarnia - there will be no customs at the Northwest Terminal since I am flying domestic from Detroit to Orlando thus noone will be wanting to challenge my citizenship. Northwest said they require photo proof of identification and this is all to check in. Now 2008 is a different story. I think we will all need them then so better plan early if we are travelling next year!

When I spoke with the guy at the passport office last year and was asking about the best time to pick up a passport he told me that once summer travel is over and before the winter travel starts is the best time because the office tends to be slower then. I guess I'll be going to be ours in September this year! We are driving across in May so I'm not getting them for that trip.

I am crossing from Windsor to Detroit and Spirit airlines said that I do not need a passport to fly from Detroit to Orlando, just my birth certificate/drivers licence.

Exactly, they dont care what citizenship you are at the airports, only the customs agents do. As long as you can prove you are the one who's name is on the ticket you are fine.

What do your children need to cross the border...a birth certificate or just a photo id?

If they are your own children and there are no custody orders in place, all you require is an original birth certificate or travel letter if the child is a newborn.
