Yes I'm a Hick......now HELP ME!

I know exactly what you're going through....I didn't fly for the first time until I was 23...and it was for work...so I was alone and frightened. I made sure to have several magazines to read and the planes typically have a copy of skymall in every seat..so that's cool to flip through. I also wanted a window seat b/c I like being able to see the ground as we take off and land. Make sure always have chewing gum available. It will enable you to pop your ears (that's the biggest key to flying for me b/c I have sinus issues).

Other than that...just breathe and have fun!!!

My extent of concentration on a plane has been a magazine or crossword puzzles. I just can't concentrate on a book. Need something I can interrupt without missing anything major. Yup, Xanax will be your friend! LOL! :)

It actually is nice being up in the air once you get used to things. You'll be fine, Beth! Enjoy it and your trip. :teeth:

OK your dueling banjos music is cracking me up.

I hate to fly also -- this is what I do

1. drink alcohol, but not too much, I want to have my wits about me if we are crashing and I have to beat the other guy to the emergency exit :p .

2. I always buy a stack of trashy magazines - Star, People, National Enquirer. DH will say "Why do you buy that garbage?", very loudly as I"m paying, then he will fight me the rest of the flight to read them.

3. I always, always say a preflight prayer. You should have seen me when I flew alone without DH or kids. I was praying like a fool, the guy next to me tried to interrupt to ask me something -- OK wait until the AMEN dude.

4. Then I stick my head in the magazine and don't pull it out again until we land. Once the wheels hit to land and I thought we were still in the air. DH was cracking up because you practically had to peel me off the ceiling. I thought we were crashing for sure.

5. Followed up by my Praise the Lord, thank you for letting me arrive safely again prayer.

For some reason the flight back never bothers me that much. Probably because once I've been to Disney I figure I can die happy. It is nice to hop on a plane at 5 in Philly and be in sunny Orlando by 8:30 ish. Now DH keeps talking about a trip to Hawaii! I have flown to CA and that was ROUGH. I kept asking the flight attendant, what state we are over? She would go I don't know and then I would say go ask the pilot please. She looked like she was ready to boot me out the emergency exit!

Good LUck!!

You could do what my DSis did on the last plane trip I took with her: Raise the armrest (if you can), close your eyes and GRAB ON TIGHT to whoever is next to you. Preferably your DH. I'm not sure some stranger would want you grabbing onto them.:p Then just keep your eyes closed and hang on until you reach cruising altitude and you should be fine. Good luck!

Okay! I am afraid of heights but not of flying! Strange but true! I even prefer the window seat!

Bring plenty of chewing gum! It helps with the nerves and also with the changes in altitude! Ear popping can be quite annoying without it! I also take dramine an hour or so before flight time; I have a bit of a sensitive tummy! I have heard that you shouldn't fly on an empty stomache. Not sure if that is true or not; but be mindful of what you eat! Not too much greasy stuff!

I can't read in moving things too well; but that is a great suggestion if you can! Music can be very soothing! If you have a lap top computer you could just chat with us here on the boards!

If you don't want to use the restroom on your first flight make sure you go before getting on the plane! And once on board don't over do the drinking! Really it isn't that bad if you do! It just takes getting use to where everything is in that tiny little space!

Remember you are still a lot safer in a plane than you would be driving!

It's okay if you need to hang on the arm rests for take off or landing! For take offs I lean back in my seat and watch out the window. For landings I like to estimate the time of touch down! That way if it is a little jerky of a landing I know when to brace for it. I find I usually don't need to worry about that!

The first time I flew anywhere I was almost 8 years old. This was way back in the olden days (think propellers on the planes) ;)

My sister (age 6) was with me and we had to change planes in El Paso, I think. We had a ball and we both love air travel to this day.

I'm sorry you are feeling so stressed about taking a plane. It's so much better than driving.

Don't worry, you'll be fine. I also take decongestants before I fly, because it helps to prevent the ear pain.

Don't drink any alcohol before your flight, or even the evening before. It's so dehydrating. Don't take that wrong if you are a non-drinker. I just had a friend who drank and flew and she was sick the whole way.

have a great trip!

Good luck!!

My families very first trip to WDW was in December of 2002. It was all of our first time flying:earseek: from Vermont to Orlando. DH and I were a wreck!

We flew Jet Blue which was great! Everyone has their own TV so you can watch whatever. It also shows you on the TV screen where you are on your flight, which I loved.

It wasn't bad at all. Nothing to complain about except that I don't like it;)

I'm ready for another Disney trip, but not ready for the flight. I guess its the price I have to pay for fun;)

Safe travels!

MJ If you hear someone screaming you know its me..........I'll let you know where we are staying, not quite sure yet.

Okay Kallison, this cracked me up,

because once I've been to Disney I figure I can die happy.

We still won't know anything until Monday but I'll definatly post.

My DH had never flown til we went to WDW for the first time when he was 46. He was SO scared but made it thru his first flight with flying colors! (pun intended!:teeth: ) Sure he never unfastened his seatbelt or looked out of any windows but he was fine.

Good luck Beauty!! It'll be fine and you will LOVE arriving in Orlando so soon!!!:D
