It was parent-teacher night tonight so we took the opportunity to give advance notice about our trip 2 months from now. My DDs (grades 2 and 7) will be missing 2 whole weeks of school and I was worried about how that would go over. I think it helped that I was really respectful of the fact that this created "work" for the teachers and I left it with them to determine how much work to give us to take and how much to leave for "catch up" after the trip. They were all really reasonable. It looks like DD7 will have dictee(French spelling) as well as some reading and math that will be manageable in the car. DD12 will have French reading, English reading and Math. Everything else will "keep" until after. The teachers all seemed to appreciate the value of the family time and they all agreed to keep it a secret as the girls will not know untill after Christmas. I feel so relieved!

I'm so glad everything went so smoothly for you when telling the teachers.
Have a great time!! I'm so jealous!

Glad to hear that it all went well with the teachers.

Altho I am very surprised that they didn't give you any grief about taking the kids out for an entire two weeks - wow!

Hope you have a great time! :thumbsup2

I know it always feels good to have that "talk" with the teachers behind you. Are your kids in private school? I have found that my private school teachers are much better to work with and much more understanding than my public school teachers. I have 2 kids in private Christian school and my oldest DD is in public school. Anyway, have a great vacation!! Wish we could afford to go for 2 weeks!!

I just told my kids' teachers at parent teacher conference time too. It went great, and they didn't bat an eye. My kids are younger though (2nd and K) and will only miss a week (a few of those days filled with Christmas parties, etc). I also dropped off a more formal letter to the school office, since it helps them to know the reason for the absences and to know ahead of time. They were reasonable too.

My kids only need to keep a travel journal while we're gone. I'm curious to know how much DS7 will be "behind" when we return. They are both excellent students though, and have not missed a day of school yet this year.

My kids are in a French Immersion Public School. It is good when the teachers understand the value of quality family time.
