Yard Sales and Permits

Are area has just passed a law saying that we need to purchase a permit to have a yard sale. I haven't heard all of the details but the folks that do have to buy these now, can you tell me your experience? Do they limit you on what you can sell, etc?

Our city has them, the only limit is you can only have two per year (cuts down on the garage sale stores some people like to have) and also we aren't allowed to put signs anywhere except the yard. The neighboring city (across one street) does allow signs which is good. Some people park cars at the end of the street with signs on them! They cost us $5.00 for a 10 day permit so you can do two weekends if you want to. Thursday is Garage Sale day around here and I actually did Thur, Fri, Sat and the next Thurs when we moved and did just as well on the second week.

Our old neighborhood had them. It was really all about knowing we were having one so they could make sure we didn't break the start time ordinance. A cop actually showed up at ours first thing in the AM- (cut the line by the way) and did a quick walk through and bought stuff!

So no biggie to me.

When we lived in TX we had to pay $5 to have a yard sale. They gave you one sign that you were allowed to put up on a designated corner. You would have several signs pop up in front of yours so you had to move it constantly to advertise. It was a PITA, but there were always crowds at every sale I saw.

Where I grew up they did this. They limited you to 2 sales I year (I believe). Cost between $5-10. Cops would occassionally follow sale signs and drop in on sales to make sure they had the permit.

Basically, a way for the city to make money.

Our town charges two dollars. Again, a way to limit the number per year.

The town office makes a list of where the sales are and distributes it.
