DS is 4 1/2. I have ALL of his clothes from birth. I'm sorting DS's clothes for a yard sale. Is it better to sort by size (24 mth, 2T) or by type (shorts, pj's, pants, shirts)?

Right now I have it by size. But within the 24 mth/2T box is a mixture of pants, shorts, short sleeve shirts, long sleeve shirts, short sleeve pj's and long sleeve pj's. It just seems like too many types of things in one box.

Any advice?

I'd keep it sorted by size. As a shopper I don't want to have to go thru all your piles looking for what might work for me. If it's by size I can eliminate the too big and too small right away and just look through the rest. I shop garage sales for cute clothes that will fit or be slightly big, I'd be interested in shorts, shirts, pjs, whatever in the right sizes.

I agree, by size..also, if possible, keep something to divide the sizes..people have a way of mixing stuff up...just my 2 cents worth.good luck:)

how are you displaying them?

We tried putting them out on a table and they are mixed up instantly. Then I went to a sale where they put each size in a different rubbermaid type bin. People seem to keep them separate easier. I did it and I got a lot of compliments...

Another vote for size. I never know if I might find another cute item that I was not in search for and might just skip over a box if it wear by type!

Size first. If you can also sort within sizes by type and/or season, great, but size is always the first priority when looking for kids' clothes.

Thanks everyone!

I sorted them last night. They are in large rubbermaid bins. If I can get some large boxes at work today then I will break them down further. Maybe shirts of one size in one box, pants in another.

Definitely by size. For 2 piece things like PJ's I would safety pin the pants to the top.

I also mark the size on the price sticker. My cousin and I both take stuff to our grandma's multi-family sale and even though her clothes are way cuter and nicer than mine, I always sell practically everything I bring and she always has a large stack left over. Shoppers will totally mess up your boxes/piles and the later shoppers don't want to look at 20 bazillion clothing tags to figure what size things are. If you are pricing individually anyway, it only takes an extra couple of seconds and it really helps clear the unwanted stuff!

I would agree by size. I also read that if you really want to sell clothing items at garage sales you should have them hanging some how. We went to one last year and she had 3 tables of her kids clothes. She had used paper plates stapled to the fronts of the table saying what the size section was. It was a big help but it ended up getting all jumbled. We also went to a large neighborhood sale and one house had used hang-tags stapled to the clothes tags instead of stickers. They were simple to remove and everything had a price even towards the end of the day when we got there.

I'm ridiculous. I organize by size, then by type (i.e., 2T short sleeve ts, long sleeve ts, dress shirts, shorts, pants, pjs, jackets...3T short sleeve ts, etc., etc.). I clip a clothes pin stating the size on the first hanger of that size (pointing up) and hang them on a rack. Yes, people mix them up, but at least they start out nice and organized. :):lmao:
