Around here they are only on Saturdays. Some places have them for two days - Friday & Saturday. Sunday is more of a church/relaxing day so it may not be the best day.
Around here, NJ area, Saturday is the main day for 99% of them. I would skip Sunday since very few people are out shopping that day. Also, most of the dealers are out buying on Saturday.
I used to have them both days. But Sundays were filled with folks wanting the deal of the century - wasn't worth the time or effort to have it on Sunday,
I suppose different areas of the country may differ on the best days for these sales, but in Minnesota I have NEVER seen a garage/yard sale on a Sunday. They traditionally are Fridays & Saturdays, with Fridays being the day with the most traffic. Recently, I have noticed a trend for sales to be held on Thursdays and Fridays.

This is true. Oddly enough, Thursdays around here get the most business. That said, I don't do them on weekdays anymore, but when I do a Saturday, I make sure all my signs say "Saturday Only". This is also what I look for when I go to sales, so we know that they have not been picked over already for two days.
I've also heard that Fridays are the best day as far as sales go. You get the serious buyers and many dealers who buy at yard sales and sell to consignment stores.
We usually do ours on Saturdays and if we are left with a lot of stuff we don't want to take back in the house, we just leave it on the front lawn all nicely displayed with a "FREE" sign on it. We woke up the next morning and it was all gone one year. The next time we did that, we have a few things left behind in the morning so we just loaded it up and brought it to the dump.
A lot of the "pickers" come out at night. It was amazing the things that we think of as junk but others can really use them for something. You never know!
