So I have a bunch of clothes from my now almost 6 yo to sell. 18mos all the way to size 5. Everything from "play clothes" to gymboree matching sets; Lands End/LL Bean outerwear, etc.

I plan to pull out a couple of the "higher end" type of items and just mark them with a price. But the the rest of the "stuff"...has anyone done a 'Take this whole bag of 18 mo girl clothes for $20'...just take the whole thing...get it out of my house ;) Or even a "stuff the bag" type of offer...fill this bag with play clothes, whatever you can fit $5?

Thoughts? What has worked for you? I don't plan on getting rich off the clothes...just want it gone. Whatever I don't sell will be donated.

TIA

Do you have a consignment store near you? What I have started doing is taking the girls' clothes there. They give me $$ based on whether I want cash or store credit. I usually get the cash as I have found that if I am patient enough, I can get brand new clothes for less than they sell them used, my girls wear them, and then I get a little bit back. Not too shabby. These days it isn't as fun to take a day or two out to have a sale, prepare for a couple of weeks when I can just drop them off and go back later for a quote.

Good luck with it! If I was local I'd probably stop by!

I had a yard sale last weekend at a friends house in a busy area. We had several pairs of brand new jeans (kids and womens) with the tags still attached. The tag price ranged from $14.99 - $36.00. We had $1.00-$1.50 marked on them and never sold one single pair. We made about $200 for a weekend of sales but less than $10 of it was clothing. I guess clothing just doesn't do well in yard sales anymore or maybe it was just an off time or something. Not sure. Most of it was $.25 and still didn't sell.

I think the bag idea is a good one. Worth giving a try.

I sell tons of clothes at my yard sales every year...at least 1/2 of what I put out if not more. I also buy a lot of stuff for my son that way.

I pretty much do a blanket policy of 50 cents an item. Then I just seperate everything onto tables by size. I also string chains across my garage door and hang clothing that way (one hanger per link, that way it doesn't slide together). I usually have a rack for really nice stuff like coats/blazers/dresses but nothing more than $3. I also don't put everything out at once to keep it neat and organized. If someone is looking at a particular size/style I let them know I have more jeans or sweaters or whatever it is they are looking for.

I don't like "stuff a bag" type things at yard sales. I am pretty picky with what my DS wants/needs. Usually when I am shopping, I have an agenda of what he needs. Like swim trunks, or play pants or something like that. Very rarely do a I buy more than 2-3 pieces at a single sale. Also most people at yardsales don't care about brand names so don't price according to that (if you have a lot of that type stuff, consignment sales are better). I also won't pay more than $1 for clothing at a yardsale unless it is something exceptional like a coat.

Thanks for the feedback! Most of the stuff I am putting actual prices on other than 50 cents to a $1 is mostly winter coats, snowsuits, then a couple more "party/fancy" dress type of thing. Which I agree people may not be interested in and are probably better consigning...which I will most likely do with the "nicer" stuff.

For kids clothes we do $.50 an item or 12 items for $5.00 to encourage people to purchase more.

I would price it individually, then in the last couple of hours, change it to $5 a bag. Some people are more tempted when they think they are getting an even bigger bargain.

Try a kids consignment shop. You will make more $$. They will price and sell for you.
If just getting out of the house is what you want. You could donate them to a domestic violence shelter, or call the foster parent org. in your community to donate there. I really enjoy donating there as you know where you donation is going. If you go the Foster parent route, don't forget about back pack or small suit cases, duffel bags ect.. When these kids are taking out of their homes most of the time they put there clothing and any toys in a garbage bag. These items help them have some since of pride that they are not being taken out like the trash. Just a suggestion. :)

This year I was pretty much down to the not so great clothes left from my boys. I priced everything at .25 a piece, there were just a couple of things I put .50 or $1 on. I did pretty well getting the stuff gone. I had a box of clothes left but started with 3! I figure it this way, if you are already having the yard sale why not put the stuff out? You never know what someone may want. Personally I was looking for play clothes for my boys this summer and was disappointed I didn't find anything. People are asking WAY too much for kids clothes lately and not putting out the play stuff for sale. If you don't feel they're really good clothes, or it's a get it outta my house type of thing, do the .25 each or walmart bag for a dollar and I bet you'll get rid of a lot!

My results...I sold the clothes at 50 cents a piece or $5 for a bag. Sold about 15 bags worth of clothes. Then maybe another 20-30 pieces individually. Made a good dent in my stash :) and some cash in pocket.

I wish I had the time for a consignment shop. Unfortunately most will only take clothes during the week during the day (I work, so that is no good). Some require you to bring in everything hung or hang when you get there. Others are particular about brand, size, season, etc. So I have no patience or time for that. The few times I have done consignment I haven't averaged much more than a dollar per item anyway. So again not worth my time and energy.

I did meet a woman who gave me a business card for a group that accepts 12x12x12 boxes of a "year to grow" clothes. So basically you pack the box with clothes to take a baby from newborn to a year old. The group then gives the boxes to women's/family shelters to help new mom's out. Love this idea and will be packing some boxes for the group :thumbsup2

Thanks for all the ideas. Happy Yard Saling!

I usually price stuff between $0.25 and $0.50 a piece. If it's a nice dress or outfit, $2-$3 at the most. I just had a sale and sold 75% of all my clothing (this was 2 loooong racks full & 3 full size tables STUFFED full). I did really well for mostly clothing but then again, it was cheap.

Whenever I go into consignment shops it just seems like there's SOOOO much there and personally, I would never buy from them because I know I can get waaay better deals at a garage sale. I also don't like the fact that a lot of them just donate instead of giving the clothes back at the end of their "run". If I wanted it donated, I'd take it to Goodwill right off the bat.
