I have tons of clothes in extremely good condition that I'd rather try to sell and recoup some of the $$$ I've spent and apply it towards our August WDW vacation.

I have 2 Nike warm-up jackets that were hardly worn.

Lots of JNCO shorts and long pants, Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica, Quiksilver, and Ecko long and short sleeve shirts, all in very good condition, some in like new condition, worn maybe 4 times!

What's the going rate at yard sales for clothes like this?

Are we talking kids clothes, or adults? If adults, you'd be much better off bringing your stuff to a thrift store. My experience has been you will get next to nothing for namebrand clothing in mint condition. A thrift store will give you a much better offer. Last time we had a yard sale and offered adult clothing, NONE of it was purchased except for some old coats that belonged to my grandmother -- it seems the junkier, the better it sells as far as adult clothing goes.

However, kids clothes sell very well at yard sales. When I have sold my kids clothing, I match it up in sets and usually ask for $4/set (for the better brands) to $1/set (for lesser named brands).

You really won't get much $ at all for clothes at a yard sale, Blondie. People usually expect something for nothing at those. If you have a second hand clothing store nearby, you'd do so much better there. I've taken nicer used clothing there and they give you much more $ than you'd ever get trying to sell them at a yard sale.

Most of the clothing is boys sizes Large 14-16. Now my boys are wearing men's sizes!

I didn't think clothes sold for much at yard sales, but I wanted to ask anyway! I don't e-bay, so that is out.

I'm thinking of posting an itemized list on our bulletin board at work, I might do better that way. If not, I'll go to a thrift store, or do like I've been doing, donate them to the Goodwill.

Blondie, take them to the thrift store! All it takes is running by there on the way to work or whatever. You just fill out the paperwork, and a couple of months later when it sells, they take out their % and then send you a check. Easy as pie! :)

Where we come from they don't call it a "thrift store"... it is called a consignment store. If you bring things to the thrift store that would be like the Goodwill. What you want is a consignment store or a re-sell shop. Look in the yellow pages under consignment. .......................P

As for your question about pricing, here in Chattanooga, I'd probably put $4 on the jackets and between $1-3 on the other pieces if they are in really good condition. I think pricing depends on where you are. Here in Chatt, TN, I don't think people pay big prices at yard sales.

If you do donate these items, I would make sure to itemize the items. I use the book It's Deductible and it amazes me what they will allow you for adult clothing, especially designer clothing. Last year, I was able to deduct over $4000 on my taxes by itemizing the items I donated. (My donations included a stereo system, baby equipment and small appliances as well.)

For a boy's casual cloth jacket, you can deduct $16 if it's in good condition. (In the 2002 edition of the book, they don't have a section for boys/childrens designer clothing.)

A lady's long-sleeved casual shirt/blouse will deduct $16 from your taxes if in good cond. and $30 if it is a designer shirt.

Once, I started doing this, I realized it was more profitable for me to do this than to sell my clothing for $1 each.

I've had garage sales for the last couple years. While I do very well with them, I mostly sell children's clothing, it is also a big headache. So, I've really been doing the consignment shop. I've found that ebay can be good if they are name brand, but otherwise, I don't have luck on ebay selling clothes. We also plan on donating quite a bit this year because we plan on having enough deductions to make it worth our while. Don't you have to have quite a bit before it make a difference. So far for the year I'm at $1500, and it hasn't changed my savings.
