Help! I am curently filling up my cart at Yankee Candle and I am looking for a gift for our Thanksgiving Dinner hostess. She is elderly (in her 80's), and lives alone. I don't think I want to buy a fall scent because by the time she receives it fall is almost over. I know she burns candles but I have no idea what scents she enjoys and obviously I don't want her having to return/exchange it for another scent. I guess I want to try and stay away from overpowering also. More on the neutral side? Perhaps a nice holiday scent? I was kind of wondering about the Cranberry Chutney? Come on guys, let me hear your suggestions/thoughts/favorites! I'v eben at this for almost two hours now and just can not decide!:goodvibes

It's clean cotton all the way for me. Can't beat it. I've got others, but it always wins!

My favorite holiday scent is Home for the Holidays :goodvibes

home sweet home
home for the holidays
balsam fir
christmas cookie
pumpkin spice

Vanilla Buttercream is gorgeous, but it gives me a headache every time - had to give them to my sister!

Looks like almost all of you have mentioned Home For The Holidays!:) Is this a really strong scent? Anything you can describe? So far it looks like that is definitely in the lead...

I'm new to YC so don't know a lot of their scents yet but I have cranberry chutney burning right now in tart form and it's overpowering to say the least. I've burned it for at least fifteen hours total and it's just finally starting to be mild enough to not give me a headache. I kind of like it now but at the beginning I almost tossed it. II wouldn't give her that particular scent!)

My favorite of all time is Clean Cotton.

But if you're looking for a holiday scent, I love Jack Frost. It's a vanilla-peppermint scent. It smells so holiday-ish (is that a word? :goodvibes). I also like Home For The Holidays.

I also love Jack Frost! But I have never smelled Home For The Holidays, of the two which would you choose?

Jack Frost is my favorite for the holidays. I also like Sparkling Pine but it is strong - it's good for us because we have an artificial tree so it makes the house smell like Christmas (you don't even have to light it to get the scent). My "everyday" candle scent is Autumn Woods. I love the scent and it's not too strong.

Home Sweet Home
Cranberry Mandarin
and any kind of Apple - Macintosh, Apple Spice, Spiced Cider, etc.

BUT>> my 13 yr old LOVES the Buttercream... so much, that I bought him a 12 pack of Buttercream Votives last year!

The one thing I get for my Dad every year, is a 12 pack of misc. votives. I get a collection of all the scents he likes, so he can have them all!

I guess one thing that kind of keeps running through my head is that if I pick a certain scent such as Jack Frost or Sparkling Pine and say she does not like peppermint or pine then the candle is pretty much useless to her. So maybe I would be better off with a more blended scent such as Home For The Holidays? It is amazing how each of us has our favorite scents and they are so completely different - it makes it really hard to choose. For example I know Home Sweet Home is a very popular scent - but I can't stand it.:confused3 I'm still listening to everything you are saying and refreshing my shopping cart in between - thank you all so much!

If I had to chose, I'd chose Jack Frost. It's just a cleaner scent to me. HFTH has a more balsam-y undertone which not everyone likes.

Have any of you tried the Red Apple Wreath? Any thoughts on it?

Buttercream or French Vanillia. I always have at least one in my house. They smell great by themselves but you can also burn anything else with it and they mix beautifully.

I like Buttercream in the kitchen. It covers up cooking smells quickly!
