What are the ruins like at Xcaret? I think this will be a good excursion for the whole family, but DH wants to see Mayan ruins.

Should we do this or is there a better excursion for us that has the Mayan ruins?

It will be me, DH, DD's 10 and 4.

I have been to Xcaret 3 times. There are some small ruins but nothing huge like Coba, Chichen-Itza or even Tulum. I LOVE Xcaret but another good option for you may be Tulum/Xel-Ha. Xel-Ha is also a wonderful nature park and the ruins at Tulum are an awsome thing to see (on a beautiful beach!)

I would second the previous post. If ruins are the primary objective then Tulum is a better and spectacular. On the other Xcaret has a wonderful underground river and better snorkeling than Xel-Ha. Also a great program demonstrating the Aztec ballgame and a wondereful nightime pageant which you would probably miss on any excursion.

My family and I did the Tulum ruins/Xelha excursion and we can HIGHLY recommend it. You spend about 2 hours at the ruins and then it's on the Xel-ha. You didn't say when you're going but we went in the summer and after getting hot and sweaty at the ruins, the cooling waters of Xel-ha were wonderful. It's a beautiful place. Keep in mind that you cannot use your standard suntan lotion as this damages the marine life in the ecological park. They sell a water soluable suntan lotion and believe me, they actually have people standing around and if they smell regular suntan lotion on you, they ask you to shower it aff before getting in the water! The environmentally safe lotion this past summer was $12.00 a tube. Just remember to keep applying it OFTEN!

By going to the ruins first and Xel-ha afterwards, you please your husband and yourself!:teeth:

I've been to Tulum once and Xcaret twice and both excursions are a great time. The Tulum ruins were really wonderful to see and inspiring and not too tiring. Xcaret has a unique underground fresh water river that you can float through which is refreshing and really wonderful. Our kids also did the dolphin experience there, but book early because it does fill up. You will have a great time on either excursion!
