Who will have the bigger opening weekend?

X-Men had $85,058,003

Will Star-Trek beat it?

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVED X-Men Origins! The action was Great! But I think that there are a lot of Trekkies out there (I am a semi one) that will support the movie.

I gotta go with Star Trek by a hair. Right now it has a 95% rating on rottentomatoes.com from critics. That's along the lines of what Iron Man and Dark Knight got last year. That plus it's a summer action movie will give it a big boost. Since Wolverine is only in it's second week and there may still be some stragglers, I'm going to guess a $90 million opening weekend for Star Trek.

I'm going to go with Star Trek by a small margin.

I think there are more Trekkies out there than X-Men fans.

I gotta go with Star Trek partly because I'm a Trekkie. And remember that Xmen got leaked weeks before the movie was released so I'm sure a lot of people saw it at home and didn't go to the movies.

Most likely - Star Trek. Not necessarily because it has more fans, as Star Trek and X-Men fans are, by and large, the same group of people, or because it will be better - but because Wolverine broke the ice for the movie season. The opening weekend tally isn't indicative of the quality of the movie, but of the excitement / expectations set - and they have been pumping Star Trek for about a year now.

Saw Wolverine - liked it. Will see Star Trek - expect to like it. Time for the summer blockbusters!

I agree there are a lot of people who are fans of both. I think the other thing the x-men movie has going against it is there have been a lot of very good x-men movies in the past 10 years. I want to see Wolverine, but it's dropped a lot of the cast that I liked and the fact it was coming out didn't make me say "woah" like star trek did. I guess I haven't been looking forward to it as much and soort of know what to expect. Nobody has been watching the casting etc. for Wolverine but people have been watching Star Trek like crazy to see who will be playing who. I think the curiosity of what this is going to look like will give Star Trek a massive opening. Then the trailers and marketing for Star Trek have been much better, I saw three different channels playing old Star Trek movies last night...even discovery had "How William Shatner Changed the World" on going through all the inventions Star Trek inspired. It's been absolutely everywhere.

Oh God, if you're comparing Wolverine and Star Trek??? STAR TREK by a mile! Wolverine was not good and the buzz was it stunk before it even opened. Star Trek has TONS of "good buzz" prior to it's openign today.

Yes, I will rent Wolverine for sure. However I am considering going to see Star Trek and I rarely go to the movies.

I have to go see "Sylar" as Spock.:lmao:

Wolverine was really good, I liked all of the actors, it had great action and effects, it had Hugh Jackman booty, and me and my teenage daughter (who has never seen a Star Trek ep. in her life) would rather go see Star Trek again. She is even willing to spend her own money:scared1:

There are THREE generations of Trekkers/Trekkies. We have waited seven looong years for another Star Trek movie. :hourglass

I think that we waited over 12 years for a good one. The last two just didn't cut it for me.
I voted Trek, but I also already saw Wolverine, which was a good action flick.

It's interesting because Star Trek started showings last night - which can take away from their opening weekend (Thursday grosses don't get counted in the opening weekend tally), but word-of-mouth on Star Trek is phenomenonal already and I think that's just going to drive more people to the movies and lead to a huge opening weekend anyway.

And I loved X-Men Origins (saw it twice already), but I think it's going to drop like a rock this weekend. None of the X-Men movies have had great legs - even X2, which was arguably the best of the series, was squashed by The Matrix Reloaded a week or so after it's release.

Update - yep, Star Trek is going to have a huge opening weekend. $7 million just on the Thursday night showings!

Star Trek Blasts Off with an Estimated $7 Million
Source: Variety May 8, 2009

Variety reports that Paramount Pictures' Star Trek earned an estimated $7 million on Thursday night from most of its 3,800 screens.

The studio opened Iron Man on a Thursday night in May of 2008. That film grossed north of $4 milion in Thursday evening/midnight screenings on its way to making $102.1 million for the weekend.

Last weekend, 20th Century Fox's X-Men Origisn: Wolverine grossed nearly $5 million in midnight runs, although "Wolverine" didn't start its run until 12:01 a.m. Friday.

DS' went last night at 10pm to see WOLVERINE...and being CA they were able to get to see STAR TREK instead!!!!!!!!!!! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

They said it was amazing and already have plans to see it AGAIN!!! :thumbsup2

So my vote goes with STAR TREK!!! ::yes::

It's also going to get a big boost from the IMAX screenings - those shows are selling out, and the tickets are nearly twice as much as tickets at a conventional theater.

I think it's likely to stay #1 over the Angels & Demons release next week, which is rare for a summer movie, since they're mostly front-loaded into their opening weekend.
