My jeep wouldn't start last week, no problem with the battery or starter, it would do it randomly, I was able to drive it to the dealership on Saturday. They told me it was bad key and they also found some transmission issue. That was covered under warranty but the key of course was not. $325 for a new key with programming! :scared1: Talk about a budget buster! I picked it up Tuesday and Friday morning when I went to go to work, it would not start again. I had it towed and as the guy was putting it on the truck, he tried to start it and it did. I had him tow it anyway. The dealership called fri afternoon and said it was the ignition switchi had been was fixed and it was all set. That was under warranty as well. When I went to pick it up the service advisors were gone for the day but DH says we should get our money back for the key since that wasn't the issue. I don't see them doing that. Would you pursue or not?

I see nothing wrong with just mentioning, so it wasn't the key? Maybe they won't refund all the money, but what about just asking to pay cost, not retail.

I called and they said I would have needed a new key anyway with the new switch. After I hung up and thought about it, something smells fishy. They changed the switch after I already had the new key, its not like they gave me ANOTHER key afterwards. I am having DH call, which I should have done in the 1st place.

I work at a car dealership (in the service dept) and Yes I would ask for your money for the key and programming back. If you exhaust ALL avenues with the dealership (if they have a customer relations manager call that person) and still dont get your money back, look in your owners manual and call customer assistance. But please remember that being nice gets you a lot farther than screaming and demanding.

The key is part of the ignition, therefore it should be covered under warranty also .

That is what I was thinking!

I hate taking cars to dealerships and ONLY do it when I get a letter with a recall and it will be 100% covered.

Everytime I go for the above they ALWAYS come up with at least 400 dollars' worth of work that is "needed." I tell them thank you and drive away.

I called my warranty company and they said that they don't see anywhere in the service that was done where a new key is needed. I could have had my old key reprogrammed and the dealership is full of it. DH is going there today.
