I own a 40D and a Rebel XT. The 40D is getting error99 so I plan to send it in for repair and have been using the XT. As luck would have it, the XT is acting up as well, the w/b is off with green tint and quality is very coarse and pixely. I've done everything I know, switched lenses, self cleaning, etc with no luck. I'm guessing it's the sensor and it needs to go to Canon as well.. However when I requested a repair estimate..the cost is $210 + taxes. The XT is 7 years old with a lot of usage between my daughter and I. I'm rethinking about repair and debating if I should go for a T3i or a G12?

Would you spend $210 (or more) to repair a 7 year old DSLR?

I wouldn't spend any money to repair my Rebel XT if it broke. Not with what entry level DSLR's are going for now (you can replace it for half the cost of what the XT went for new) and not with how far the technology as far as ISO range and performance has come in the last 7 years.

With technology improving every day, I'd get a new one. By the time you do that, the newer one will be right around the corner.

I don't think the average shutter life on the XT was very good. You could fix the sensor and have something else go wrong with it. I'd upgrade.

Use your 40 as a backup and get the T3i or the 60D.

No way would I put a penny into a 7 year old XT. Contact Canon and ask about their loyalty program. That would be a better option. I think it was my XT that had the shutter fail..... Just stopped one day (at Disneyland! :scared1:) mid-release. There's no way of knowing what would come next.

You could save a little money and get factory refurb body. If you get one via a reputable dealer it will be personally inspected and tested at the factory, and cost 40% less. Many people swear by it. My 40d was brand new, with only about 100 shutter cycles on it (the testing cycles), but I paid about 1/2 price.

Is the 40D showing a consistent Error 99 or just occasionally? Error 99 is not the kiss of death a lot of people think it is. What Error 99 means is that something happened to the camera that isn't covered by any of the toehr error messages. It could be a simple as dirty lens contacts, which you can clean yourself, or as complicated as a failing sensor.

If you have gotten the Error 99 message only once or infrequently, sending the camera for service might be premature, especially if it's not in warranty. I have four Canon DSLRs and every one of them has thrown an Error 99 at one time or another yet none of them had to go in for service because of it.

As far as the XT acting up is concerned, the WB green tint might be due to a miss-adjustment in the White Balance settings Take a look at Pages 56 thru 61 in your manual and check your settings, including the WB shift/bracketing.

You might also look at your resolution settings (Page 33) and see if they are different than what you normally use.

Hope this helps...

Agree. Have you tried the process of elimination. Remove the card and see if you get the error. Remove the lens and try again. Recharge battery.

That said, I do not travel without two bodies. I had an ERR99 at Disney on first day of a trip. Mine was the shutter on the 40D which I understand is not completely uncommon. Was intermittent but quickly failed.

Replace the older model first. Just played with a 60D and they are nice.
