WWYD--Son wrecked the car **Update pg 2

If your insurance is going to pay for all damages less the deductible, then what are you asking him to pay for? The deductible or the cost if you didn't have insurance?

We expect him to cover the $500 deductible and pay for the rate increase. That's what he would do if he had insurance on his own. We will not be dropping him from our insurance, provided he doesn't make a habit of getting involved in accidents :goodvibes As high as insurance would be for him at 19, I feel okay about helping him out on that. So far, he has stepped up to the plate and resigned himself to doing the right thing.

Great kid. Great parents.
You should be proud!

Cathy

if you are in PA forget about making him pay for med expense for the lady we are a no fault state and everyone is responsible for their own med coverage from a MVA regardless of fault...so if you are here her policy will pay for her medical expensive and she is charged on her policy for it so no rate hike for her. if your son was hurt your policy would pay for his...the car now is a whole different story if he is a fault you pay for both cars....
just remember everyone makes a mistake how much blame and anquish do you really want to place on him - I am sure he feels bad enough without all the extras - he was wrong hopefully he knows that and will be more careful in the future - make him pay or cont. to the deduc. that is all...That is why we all carry insurance to help pay for ACCIDENTS.....don't put school up or let him use it as an out. Just an opinion

aww...poor guy. I can imagine how awful he must feel. He has only one ticket and he's 19? That's good in my book!

Good for you in your commitment to go with him for a court appearance. As much as he may think he can do that on his own, having you along will be great support (after all, you don't EVER want him to take a court appearance lightly!)

You're doing the right thing - he should pay for the deductible and any rate increase. It sounds like you "run interference" between your DH & "situations" - not easy, I know!

Hang in there!!

I faced the EXACT same situation w/my 16 y.o. DD this summer.

We basically handled it the way you are doing. Any "non-covered" expenses out of our pocket come out of HER pocket.

So far that has been about $850.

She is still driving, mostly because we can't ferry her everywhere she needs to go.

Her BIG condition is that she has to call us whenever she gets to, leaves or otherwise gets in her car to go someplace. She has, fortunately for her, not voiced any objections to this condition.

Well, he's only been driving 4 months, so don't be too impressed.

You're right, sometimes i do have to run interference between the guys. DH is not a yeller, but DS is. He thrashes around and pushes his dad's buttons, which prompts DH to just clamp down harder, which makes DS thrash some more...you get the picture. These two are the spitting image of DH and HIS father. :confused3
