WWYD ? Son fell at school & no one called ?

In my district, the elementary and I'm sure that the middle schools only have health technicians.

I teach kids that are a bit older (4th grade) so maybe it's common in the younger grades to tell the parents about every fall, scrape or bump. If I had to report all of those things to parents, I would need a secretary to help me out. I have kids that fall out of their chairs. Just sitting there doing math and the next thing you know there's a kid down.:rotfl: Couldn't tell you how it happens, but it does.

Any fall that includes a head injury should be reported - period.

The chance the child could turn ill and the parent think it was simply an upset tummy is to scarry to chance :sad2:

Also the OP's son is in a private school - 1st grade with only 10 students in the class - in this case there shouldn't be a reason the teacher couldn't have taken the time to at least write a note. The teacher had time to point out another problem that day......

Our school(200 kids from PreK-5th) is public and we have a nurse every other Friday. Yes, TWO DAYS A MONTH!:scared1: Kind of freaks me out when I think about it.

When we have kids bump their heads, or when an accident leave a mark on the face, I call the parents as soon as possible. If I wait, I am more likely to forget. No parent wants to pick up their child and have them looking different than when they left. Small scrapes and bruises on the arms/legs, we don't call or even fill out a report.

I have to ask who gives out the meds? All the schools my kids have gone to have had a nurse full time.

Any head injury should be reported.

OP, it looks like this has ended well. I would have done exactly what your hubby did. The teacher responded like I would expect.

My niece fell in first or second grade. The teacher didn't think it was anything, even when she was not paying attention and was not answering questions correctly. My niece got into trouble for making nonsense responses. Her mom got there and realized something was wrong. Took her to the ER and found out she had a concussion.

I would have been upset that I hadn't been notified, but I also can easily understand how it could happen.

When she was in K or 1st grade, my DD had an accident at school. I found out when she came home wearing pants that weren't hers. I was very annoyed that the nurse hadn't called me because every time DD had an accident since she was two she had a severe bladder/UTI. Since I didn't know earlier in the day, I had to keep her home to take her to the Dr the following day. Obviously, to the teacher and nurse it was no big deal because some kids that age have accidents often.

When my sister was little she bit her tongue almost completely off at school. When did my mom find out? When my sister got home and opened her mouth to show her and we nearly passed out from the sight of it. This happened at recess-- several hours earlier. My sister was a shy kid, so the teacher thought nothing of her being quiet and not opening her mouth the rest of the day.

DS 6 just finished dinner & I brushed his bangs back as we were talking & he went "ouch". I look & there's a dime sized abrasion & raised bump on his forehead. He's fine but no call from the school or mention from his teacher when DH picked him up.

DS said that the teacher put ice, which is fine & he told me he tripped in recess & fell & he hit his head on the ground. But I've never had any incident even minor not reported to me when he was in kinder. He's now in 1rst grade. It really bothers me because when DH picked him up the same teacher told DH that DS wasn't listening to the teacher's aide & that she had added a book for reading for homework. But the bump & abrasion she forgot to mention ?

Not that I'm complaining on how the fall was taken care of, ice etc. But his Kinder teacher always called & told me "don't worry, he fell, or so & so pushed him etc. I put ice but I had to let you know since I had to file a report for the principal." So I'm used to that type of interaction. P.S. DS attends a small private Christian school, so small class size & lots of hands on by the staff.

I was thinking of sending his teacher a note, just that please to let me know if he gets hurt at school & giving her DH & my cell phone. Of course the school has all our contact info at the office & maybe she was having a hectic day etc. I don't know but it really bothered me. DH wants me to send an e-mail to the Principal, nicely worded but documented.

School started 8/24, so far no other problems & DS likes his teacher. But to be honest my first reaction was to be upset since I wasn't expecting to see a big bump & abrasion & not be told about it immediately. WWYD ? I don't want to start a teacher vs parents fight. I really like his school & his teachers are great but I also want to make sure I know of any injury or treatment given to DS.

Why don't you wrap him in bubble wrap and put a helmet on him before you send him to school or out to play. He is a boy, let him be one. Girls too. We are raising a society of wimps.

this is really uncalled for....

it was a head injury, yes, it could have been a simple bump or may have been a really hard hit, point is OP wasn't notified. I wouldn't expect to be notified of every scrape but a head injury, yes.

I am really surprised by how many of you still have nurses in all of your schools. My oldest is a senior, my youngest in 3rd grade and none of our schools have nurses for even one day a week, let alone everyday. Oh and the person that hands out any meds would be the school secretaries.

And to the OP since there was a head injury involved I can see being upset. Also since this is a small private school I can see were you recieve more information about your child everyday than most of us in larger schools so would rightfully expect to be informed.

I don't know- I probably wouldn't get that upset about it- then again we have 2 full time nurses at our school - when a student goes to the nurse they have to have a pass which has layers, teacher keeps one nurse keeps one and one to the parent- for every sore throat, scrape, bump, fever whatever- it is a small bump, not a gaping hole or protruding knot, I just think the teacher was probably busy with recess, and then classroom activity- and if the child didn't complain about it again then it is easy to see how it could be forgotten- relax it won't be the last time.
