WWYD? Leave 6 points behind or use 22 from another UY?

New to DVC. Bought a 100 point contract at BWV with 69 points left over for December 2016 UY. I am planning on banking them and using them in January of 2018. The dilemma is this - if we get a standard view studio villa for 6 nights, it will take 63 points. That means we will have 6 points that will likely go unused. If we get a studio with a better view, we will have to use 22 points from the 2017 UY.

I like the idea of using less points for this trip and having more for our next trip, but the next trip will definitely not be during 2018. But I feel like leaving points behind is a waste.

word of warning -- getting a standard view room even at 8 am 11 months out is by no means guaranteed. This is ESPECIALLY true if you're trying to get a room during the marathon.

You could always try transferring them to someone for $10-$12. That way it is a win-win for both parties.

Just make sure to not bank them if you decide to do that, since banked points can't be transferred.

Then there is my favorite option. Stay one more night! You would still have to borrow some points from the next year, but it would be fewer points.

I would book another night, or lose the 6 points instead of using 1/5 of your points from the next year for a better view.

I also second pp, standard view studios can be hard to get, especially from September thru early January. You need to be online at exactly 8:00 am on the day your 11 month window opens. You still may not get one. There are too many bwv owners trying to book the standard view villas.

Nobody will transfer in 6 points. It would burn a transfer on a tiny transaction. And the $60 is not worth the hassle. I would stay an extra night and spend them. It's not a waste if they drop off. You're talking about $60 here. Better to lose $60 than spend $220 on not wasting the $60. ;)

I'd add a night to my January 2018 trip. If I couldn't do that, I'd just let the 6 extra points expire or perhaps transfer to another member. Sometimes, people need just a few points to complete a reservation. I'd consider doing that for free or enough to cover dues.

There are frequently people looking for just a few points. Buying from DVC is only at 7 months but a transfer from another owner can give the 11 month window.

I'd generally say to book the standard view OP. But you said that 2018 won't be a visit either? So you'll have all your 2017 as extra points? If you book the standard then why not bank the extra points and then rent out using those points along with your 2017 points? Or, splurge and use what you have by booking a Boardwalk view.

I second the Boardwalk view. It's incredible. Just make sure you're on a high floor because it can be very noisy.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody. We are leaning towards the Boardwalk view. Is there a way to make sure we get a high floor, or is it simply a request?

I have never just let points expire! I say to USE them and worry about the next trip when it comes! Don't forget, you can later borrow from the following year (if your next trip falls in the time that you can). IMO it's better to keep borrowing from the following year than to let points go to waste.

I always use my leftover points to book add-on stays, at the 7 month booking window, and purchasing one-time use points- up to 24 points plus leftovers can mean one or two nights tacked onto an existing stay.
