DS will be decorating a Christmas wreath in school. He has to bring in the decorations so what do I buy? I can only think of ornments any other ideas?

Okay, I am a wanna-be CRAFTY.
I would having fun with this one!
I am changing up Christmas this year with a new color scheme. Changing from a deeper more Cranberry red to a traditional bright Christmas-Red.

Anyhow, how big is the wreath?
How much do you want to put into it?
What age, and/or decorating skills?
Any color or theme?
Do you want him to do a wreath that is 'him'...
When my son was a kid, for example, that might have been 'John Deere' theme, maybe?

IMHO, a wreath needs a nice bow.
Easy enough to buy a bow. Or a roll of ribbon, and some wire is best to tie it all together and wire it onto the wreath.
Narrow ribbon or heavy enough string might work as well.

I think I might be able to give you some ideas and tips???

ornaments, tinsel (the wire type with stars or something similar), ribbon, holly berries. The possibilities are endless, you need to pick a theme and that may help. It depends on his age and abilities too. I would go to the dollar store or Dollar General and get some inspiration and cheap supplies!

We tend to hit the craft store for stuff like this. The floral picks are cheap and easy to use in wreaths. But what kind of wreath base? A wire one, a straw wreath, evergreen? Or a vine wreath?

But normally, my first thoughts would be floral picks, ribbon (wide, wire rimmed), ornaments (not heavy ones, plastic are perfect) and a bow.

I would pick first one focal point item to make it personal. A snowman, santa, mickey mouse, stitch, whatever. Then base everything else around that. The focal point can be attached to sit in the middle or be attached to the side. So if you choose a Mickey Mouse, then I would choose the other items in a color to compliment that. Or at least more reds less green. With a snowman, you may can find fake snow to add or snowflakes.

Wired ribbon is easier to work with than the soft variety. Get a spool of 22 - 26 gauge wire to attach items to the wreath's body and hang it as well. Go in the backyard and get cuttings of juniper privet hedge, acorns with tops...what ever looks good and make sprays with them in advance. Depending on the age of the child and availability of electricity buy a cheap glue gun ($5.00-$10.00), preferably, cool temp. Dollar stores have lots of small ball ornaments in various sizes or just look through your current collection and pass them on to him.
Have fun.

I am thinking that a small basic wreath base, of some kind, is being provided? And, the OP is asked to send in the decorations.
I know if my son were doing a wreath, he would not be too excited about floral-picks.
I would pick a theme or interest.

For the John Deere idea I mentioned, I would find a roll of Christmas ribbon with a similar green.
Maybe some cheaper plastic toy tractors that look similar to John Deere.
Maybe some cheap gold and green Christmas balls.

Lets say one wants to do Star Wars.
That would be Cool too!
I could see some black and sparkly silver. Maybe a pop of red for color.
Print out images of favorite Star Wars characters/ships/etc from online. glue onto card stock, and cut them out.
I could see a STAR WARS logo at the bottom of the wreath, with a bow of black with sparkly silver ribbon.

Obviously, we don't know anything about your son, or the project.
But, I would let some personal creativity show thru.

What grade is your son in? For something simple, I’d do a big bow and pine cones sprayed with glitter.

Or as pp said, a fun theme. We’ve done “sweets”, and it came out good, using candy canes, green and red starlight peppermints, gingerbread men cookies, gum drops, etc.

Thanks he is in 7th grade and it will be a real wreath. He said he wants his theme to be Christmas! I think I will get some ornaments and look in Dollar Tree or Michaels. Crafts scare me since I've never been artistic.

At Target in the Christmas Shop they have stuff for miniature trees that would be perfect. $2-$3 for packs of small ornaments, wire garland, mini pine cones, snowflakes etc. The best part is you pick a package of ornaments and there are all sorts of accessories that coordinate with them. I picked out two tinsel trees and two themes and my kids have trees that are totally decked out for about $20 apiece. For a wreath I bet you could get a whole slew of stuff for not much. I’d pick up some thin wire to attach. Hot glue only lasts so long.

Good!
Christmas is a still a very broad thing, though.
Santa???
Snow???
Deer/Reindeer???
Bright miniature gift boxes???
What do you think 'Christmas' might look like in his mind?

Maybe just bright multicolored balls, like for miniature trees, if the wreath will be smaller.

If you are really, really, not crafty at all... Lots of pre-made bows you can probably find, too. All ready for gifts, or whatever.
Bows are easy enough for me... But I looked on youtube and most of the videos look too challenging for a beginner.

How about a string or two of battery powered mini-lights?

Decide on a budget limit, and go hit a craft store like Hobby Lobby...
It doesn't all have to be the same color... but a choice of a few coordinating colors will usually work well and come together nicely.

For and example, I would pick out one thing/theme, like one of the ones mentioned above.
Find one nice ornament or craft/decor piece as the focal point.
Work with that on coordinating the bow and other things like Christmas balls.

You seem to be a Disney fan. Is he a fan enough to want to use a Santa-Mickey?
That would be easy to put together with some kind of Santa Mickey, maybe stuffed, with matching santa red ribbon and balls, etc.

You could get a Mickey Greeting card, cut out the Mickey, glue it on to heavier paper-cardstock. Cut this out leaving a 1/4 inch around. Then glue-glitter that edge to make a nice border.

If you wanted to put in a little effort, and had a glue-gun or some good simple glue, you could get some mini-balls, if you could find black, and glue two of them onto a regular sized silver ball, to make Mickey Ear Christmas balls.

Just take him with you and let him pick out what he wants to put on it.

You do need to know how the items will be attached. And if you need to supply what attaches them.

Yes!
I was going to say the same thing, make him come along and start to pick something out!!!!
But, I hesitated, because for my son, who is not 'crafty' AT ALL, and not into this kind of thing. That would be like, worse than, pulling teeth!!

And, LuvsJack is right. If you want this to come together, you should probably make sure all items are attached to some craft-wire or glued to a pick.
that really is how they need to be attached to the wreath.
It will be SO MUCH easier if this is done beforehand.
