Wow! NC does shut down when it snows

Buncombe County Schools have closed already for tomorrow. While I understand and agree with the reasoning, my poor group home kids ( kids with very severe autism) NEED to be in school. They thrive on the structure of school and when school is out for lots of days in a row behavior gets worse and worse. I hope we can go back on Wednesday and not be out until Thursday. There is another storm on the way and it is looking like we might be out on Friday as well.

Amen!! Our younger dd has only moderate autism, and these snow days are hard on her. I buy the grade school curriculum books at Sams Club, and we play school. But she spends a lot of the time talking to herself and having meltdowns. I need to come up with a 10 hr routine for snowdays!! Seriously, she's so much happier with back-to-back activities, as I'm slowly realizing. I hope you guys are back in school soon!!

Mrs. Pete is exactly right. We just don't get enough snow and ice here to justify that.

Someone else also mentioned the ice thing. It's really, really hard to drive safely on ice.

Our school are closed again tomorrow and we're scheduled to go Saturday (assuming we don't get that storm Friday). The roads look adequately clear to me, but I don't make the decisions and I certainly don't have the responsibility of keeping children safe.

I was carrying groceries inside and heard something pop and my ankle twisted and all the groceries fell on me in my own driveway. Went to the dr yest and I badly sprained my right ankle, xray looks like I also broke it but I'll find out tomorrow, wearing a boot, got crutches, and can't put any weight on it, so I really don't like snow. My kids bball games were cancelled Sat-today.

I have been in Nc for over 11 years and I have to say it is NOTHING like driving in the north. We get snow then ice and the plows can't get through the ice. So, if you venture out you either slide everywhere, or you find a set of frozen tire tracks to ride in like a train! Nobody can drive in this. Now, for schools being closed i9n Cabarrus County today...I have no idea why. Our roads have been cleared due to the solar clearing method.

Lots of snow still on the ground here, although the streets have started melting. Even so, our school was OPEN for all students today....we homeschool!

I agree about the roads today. (We are in Harrisburg) It is crazy. I think someone wanted an extra day off, so they called off the schools again! So not looking forward to more of it this weekend!

We're in Rowan County and off of school today. We're all going stir crazy. Enjoying some lovely precipitation today but thankfully it's not ice. We're getting dressed and heading to the movie theater....WE HAVE TO GET OUT OF THIS HOUSE!!

Sorry all you Southerners--it's our fault that you're getting all this snow.

You see, we've lived in NH for 14yrs and I told my husband I could not take yet another winter here. So we just finished building a house in Fairview to vacation in several times a year until we retire.

Since we've done that, NH has had the mildest winter I've seen and you guys have had 2 major snowstorms!

When we came down during Christmas break, we hired a man with a bulldozer to plow out our road on the moutain. We brought our 4 wheel pick up truck along with sand and salt and my husband then treated the road.

We were the only road that was cleared on our mountain--everyone else was waiting for it to melt!

We had many sub contractors that needed to finish up and when they came up with the excuse that they couldn't make it up our road, my husband would hop in his truck and pick them up!

I do agree that ice is a whole different story that just snow especially on the windy, mountain roads.

Thanks. I'm at work now watching the cars go by slowly. We're on a secondary road, but its mushy until its gets cooler, then it will be a sheet of ice. Our parking lot is nothing but ice even now, I think its 36 degrees or something. Business 85 looked pretty good this morning.

I live in Candler, at the foot of Mount Pisgah, so we still have almost a foot of snow/ice at our house. We never got fully melted from the first storm we had this year (at CHRISTMAS!). That being said, I did make it to work yesterday and today, albeit 2 hrs. late yesterday & an hour late today. I almost busted my butt in our parking lot at work though!

Before y'all laugh at us too much, consider this:

Up North y'all have snowplows, materials for de-icing the roads, snow tires, etc. You have to do it. If you didn't, you'd be snowed in for months -- and that's not realistic. You clear your roads, and that's WHY you can drive in snow. You pay $$$$$$ in taxes so that these things can happen. In addition, you own heavy coats, snow suits, and other winter wear. You pay extra for snow tires, chains, and all-wheel drive vehicles so you can keep going in the snow. Again, you have to do it.

In contrast, we get snow here 1-3 days PER YEAR. Some years we get none. I own about 45 acres in two different counties (some in the county, some in the city), and my all my property taxes together are just under $2000/year. Our taxes are low because we don't pay for all those snowplows and salt -- I'll take the inconvenience of shutting down the world occasionally to save that much on taxes. My heavy coat is probably what you wear in October. In our circumstances, IT MAKES SENSE to shut down the world for a couple days, make it a holiday, and stay home by the fireplace!

I have to disagree with you. Saint Paul (MN, where I live), doesn't clear the roads as it snows. They let it go for DAYS. And yet we still have to get out and drive in it. Never have had snow tires, chains, etc. I have owned the same heavier coat for 8 years or so and have worn it 1 or 2 times.

I agree that it doesn't make sense for you guys to have a stockpile of snowplows and such, but we DO have a stockpile and they don't get used and we still get through to work, school, etc. on the snowiest, iciest of days. Guess it's that hearty Scandanavian in us .

Anyway, I am jealous of those of you who are just seeing snow for the first time this season. I am so over it. O.V.E.R.

I think what you are missing is that we go through the freeze/thaw everyday. If it stayed cold and everything stayed as snow then it would not be as bad. But everything turns to ICE.

And on top that what is really treacherous is that the snow/ice melts in an uneven manner. You can be driving on a perfectly clear road and turn a bend onto a part that hasn't gotten any sun and is still covered. Then you are in a world of hurt.

OK, I just have to vent for a second. My Best Friend lives in the Raleigh area. She got 4" of snow that has been completely plowed from the street for 2 days (her words, not mine). It is going to be sunny and in the fifties tomorrow and they have cancelled school again tomorrow. She said that she has no idea why.
Up here in the mountains of Asheville where we got over a foot at my house and they JUST plowed my street 30 minutes ago and there is still ice on some roads, we are going to have school with a 2 hour delay. Now, let me say, I am THRILLED we will have school, but I think I now understand why northerners don't "get it" when it comes to the snow thing here in the south. Because right now I don't understand why they don't have school and the roads are clear and we do and we have ice on the street in front of our house. ARGH!

We are now facing more awful weather this weekend. There is ice predicted Thursday into Friday which surely means another day of no school for the kids and then a "wintery mix" predicted for Friday into Saturday.

I am on call this weekend, and one of my overnight staff comes from over an hour away. I think I am going to be pro-active and pack the air mattress, a pillow and blanket and a few days changes of clothes. I am not going to risk my life and vehicle to drive on dark icy roads if I get called in because he cannot get to work. I will stink living at work for a few days, but might be worth it in the end.

Maybe if I am ridiculously prepared the weather will not be as bad as they are predicting.

Both Durham and Orange county schools are closed tomorrow. Side roads are still terrible. What I want to know is where are the snow plows? I know they have them, because I see them sitting in the place they are stored. It was over 40 and raining today and it would have been a great day to push that mush off the roads. The private plows have taken care of all the business parking lots around here, but that is the only plow action I have seen since Saturday. I am now sad because not only have we lost our two teacher workdays, tomorrow will probably take a day from our Spring Break. To add insult to injury, the schools are also not open for teachers, and we either have to use a sick day or make up the day(when, how?) Only bright spot is I have been babysitting the child I keep afterschool, so I will be making more money on that job(4 year olds can be a big job, though. No tv and you can only handle so much reading, playdough, and train track building, LOL.
