I was offered a job today that starts 8-13. We have a trip and may have to cancel.
Bummer, 1st time since 98 I am within 30 days and it looks like slim pickings to use these points before my December use year kills them.

Sorry to hear you may have to cancel. Can you explain to them that you've had this family vacation planned for months and how you would lose points/money if not used?

If not, you may have some luck renting your confirmed reservation. Like another poster suggested, David's would be a good alternative.

Good luck!

Congratulations on getting the job! Yes, at least ask for the time off. DS was out of work for over a year and got a job that started 2 weeks before our family HHI trip last year. The company gave him the time off. It could happen to you.

I would only "at least ask", if you felt very comfortable after the many conversations and you could assume the risks of the offer pulled.

..but the at least ask... umm no, I do not agree with this, I was a director of mortgage banking for a few yrs, I hired my own team members, and sometimes others. If after I hired them, this new job was not the cats meow, and the most exciting thing to happen to them, I would seriously consider pulling the offer. At least look closer. Our trainings ran once a month, so postponing even 3 days meant 1 more month. If I needed someone for the 8/13 training class, they might have been my best interview for that class, but it certainly doesn't mean, they will be the best for Sept.. or that hiring wont be frozen mid hiring.

Can you leave today and be back by the 12th?

I am so sorry I wish you well at your new job. (I cancelled once for DH getting surgery I had already online checking in 3 days out. )

Perhaps you can explain your situation to MS and they might grant you the unwritten one time late banking allowance. Doubtful but it never hurts to ask!

Congratulations on the new job!

If you cannot get the start date pushed out a week, or don't feel comfortable asking, and you doubt you could use the points before the expire, then another option is to try to re-rent the reservation itself, not the points. For situations like this (rental within 30 days), I think you can even advertise on this site. 8-13 is not the most popular week around, but at the right discounted rate, I'm sure it would rent.

Good luck and congrats on the new job!

Congratulations on getting the job! I hope you are able to do something with those points, either privately or through Davids! Good Luck.

In today's competitive job market, I would not chance asking for the time off. Some employers would be very understanding but I would either call member services or get in touch with David's. At the very least, it would give you a start on your vacation fund for your next trip.

Congratulations on getting the job and good luck. :cheer2:

most importantly, congratulations on the new job!!!! :thumbsup2

try doing as others suggested & attempt to rent the reservation on the R/T board, try to book a long weekend, and if all else fails, call MS & see if you can get a 1 time exception.

i'm sure the new position is something you have been looking forward to, so :cheer2: for you!!

I have hires lots of people. And I realize they have lives outside of a job I have never had an issue with things like per existing plans.

If my future boss seemed to think that having a vacation was a problem I would think long and hard.

I have started one job and taken a vacation about 5 weeks later I delayed starting my current job for a vacation

Yes, and if you are up front with a new employer when you first do the interview, most will accommodate you. Granted, it will be without pay, but in the long run, it's probably cheaper than losing the vacation money already spent.

Our DD was without work other than temp jobs for 2 years. She finally got a permanent job last week, and in the interview for the job, she told them that she had a family vacation coming up right before Christmas, and asked if that would be an issue for taking time off then. They said "no problem" and hired her anyway. The person hiring told her she was impressed that DD thought it was important to mention the vacation in the first interview. Being totally honest and open at the beginning is always best.

When you explain the situation, you need to be clear that you are very willing to cancel the vacation - the job is more important to you. Whether its ok will depend a lot on both the job and the boss, but the best bet is to be very clear that the vacation is obviously secondary.

If your job is something like sweetdana was hiring for - its a high turnover job - lots of qualified applicants to choose from - lower skill - where you are going to go immediately into training, I wouldn't ask. I just quit my job June 1st. I hired my replacement (before they knew I was leaving - I knew she'd be my replacement), she couldn't start for six weeks and I missed her by two - but because she was far and away the best fit, we were willing to wait - what I was doing was a small niche thing and qualified people don't walk through the door every day.

I do not necessarily agree with mentioning the vacations during the interview process but definitely when negotiating your salary etc. I was just interviewing for a job and never mentioned all my vacations I have planned in the next year. Just would not think to do that. That is what the negotiation process is for.

Is there any way your family can go without you?? Or was this a trip for you and your spouse?? If a family trip let them go without you since they had been looking forward to it.

In this case, it would not be about missing a banking deadline, but rather allowing the points to not be put in holding.

My daughter just started a new job on July 22 and told them up front that she had a family vacation in Sept that had been planned since Oct. No problem.

Full disclosure: she is still working for the same overall employer (City she lives in) but in a different department and has the same vacation time accrued. She still interviewed for this job and really really wanted it.

I still say it's worth a shot. If they say no there are options to rent.

Priorities, sometimes it sucks being a grown up!

Good luck with the new job and hopefully, you get the vacation in as well!

Congratulations on your new job - I hope it's wonderful!

When I was offered my current job - I told the company upfront that they needed to know my son was getting married on another coast in 4 months and that I needed 2 weeks off to be there. I told the person before I accepted and stated that I understood if it was problematic as it was fiscal year end and I am an accountant and if they needed someone there during that time frame I would understand the offer being rescinded and hoped that there were no hard feelings and if another position opened in the near future I hoped that they would keep me in mind.

I did not mention it in the interview process as I might not have been the person chosen - but did mention it when the position was offered before acceptance.

If you accepted the job without giving your new employer your vacation scenario I think you need to throw yourself on the mercy of member services and see if they'll allow you to do a late banking because of unforeseen circumstances.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The trip is during the end of August. Unfortunately, taking a week off won't work for the type of work I do. I'll either send my wife or reschedule. Vero is open.
