Wow, I think I officially have to cross Ohana's off my list!

My question is, is it fair to ask 1,000 kids not to have pb&j , tons of chips, peanuts and other items that have high concentrated amounts of food.

that was my point of view as well. it's a very delicate subject.

I cant belive with all of our modern science, we can't get medication, or even find out why this allergey has come up in the last 20 years.

I hope for the OP's sake they figure it out soon. Thats no way for a child to go through life or a parent for that matter.

Does anyone have any information on why they think this has become an issue now....and why it wasnt an issue 20 + years ago? i'd like to educate myself.

thnaks.

My family went in September and thought the food was excellent. The service however was not so good. I think part of it had to do with us being on the dining plan. Was anyone else that didn't get good service on the dining plan?

When we asked for the check I mentioned we were on the dining plan and she said "I know. I knew before you even sat down."

Just a note, my main issue with Ohanas is not that they have peanut stuff there, it's really just overall the terrible service- it was actually the dessert that pushed me over the edge! Got Quattro, my dd's peanut allergy is not that severe and we are having her retested this month, there is a chance she has grown out of it (that can happen if you are careful to limit exposure after the allergy is diagnosed).

Anyway, let's get back on topic!

I was not on the DDP, so our poor service was not a result of that.

??? What the heck was that about? Did you ask her why? That seems like an insulting comment.

We gave up on Ohana prior to the menu change. It's a shame, because it's such a fun idea to try all the different dishes and sample the meats from the skewers. Kona sounds much better to me now.:earsboy:

I didn't say anything. I usually tip even though I am on the dining plan but that night I did not.
They know because it is either noted on your ADR and/or they ask you when you check in at the podium. The server was not trying to infer that she knew because you looked cheap or something, surely.

As for the OP, while we have had mixed results at Ohana, we will continue to return (been many many times now over several years, menus, etc). Oh, sure, sometimes a piece of meat has been "off" for some reason or other (overcooked, dry, undercooked, whatever) and they are certainly not that great with the timing, but I have never had any major problems there. It seems the diners really need to take charge of their own meals there, LOL.

Funny, for every post/thread where folks say they felt rushed at Ohana, there's a post or thread where someone says they were left waiting for courses.

I am sorry for those of you who had bad food/time etc there. It is especially awful that they screwed up with the allergy sufferers. :scared1:

It wasn't just what she said it was also the way she said it.

We were there this past June, the service was horrible. And we were not on DDP. We will try it one more time.

With all these complaints has anyone ever spoken to a manager or contacted WDW about the poor food and service? If everyone that complained here, did so at the restaurant maybe something would be done about it.

When we had the almost complete lack of service on Dec. 27, 2005 at table 7(I have the receipt), I asked to talked to the manager and was told he or she was busy. I wrote to WDW guest services and got a form letter back.

IMO, at a place that expensive, diners should not have to take charge of their own meals. I understand at a ponderosa or some other budget place, you need to make sure you get everything you are entitled to get, and stay on top of the server, but at Ohana prices I feel that the servers should be able to be relied upon to deliver a quality experience without me having to do all the work!

I have a novel solution- maybe they should not overbook the place! That is the cause of the current rushing problem. Again, at an expensive place, IMO I should not feel like I am being rushed along just because tons of families are waiting behind me because disney double-booked it.

We ate there last week and had a great time. We were not rushed and everything came out just when we wanted it.

Loved the appetizers

I think it is a fair request, because it is a child's life on the line. I heard a story on my local news about a school where a child just died from a peanut allergy. His classroom was peanut-free, but his school was not. They figure that someone in the school must have eaten peanuts somewhere, touched a bathroom door knob (he was in the bathroom when it happened), and left some residue there. He died alone in the bathroom- they found him after he did not come back to class. !

with this comment I ask:
WHY would anyone take a child to a restaurant , like Ohana's where there is a peanut product served at the table,.every table?
I sure wouldn't want to trust the cleaning crew that MY table where MY child was sitting did not have peanut smear residue left by another person/child.. I mean how many times are the chairs wiped down? or UNDER the table edge?

i AM NOT being judgemental in any way,, just curious, to the reasons you would take a chance.

also,, what is it with the peanut allergys.... when 'WE' were kids we never heard of such a thing.. just what happened in the last 30 years that there is this death warrant by eating peanuts?

OK, I know I promised earlier that I would not say anymore on this topic, but I can't help myself...

We chose to eat at 'Ohana because we want our son to live as normal a life as possible. Peanuts are everywhere. Should we stay inside and never eat out? No, that would be silly. We feel that as long as we are taking the necessary precautions, we should be able to bring our son out to restaurants where these products are served. There are no guarantees in life. No, I cannot be sure that the table has been thoroughly cleaned, but there's a way to deal with that. I have wet ones and I wipe the table surface, including the edges and underneath, just like the custodian at my son's school does after every lunch period. My son does not have an airborne allergy, so peanut sauce at other tables will not affect him. If his allergy WAS airborne, then, yes, I might reconsider eating there.

I don't know what has happened over the last 30 years, and I'm not sure if anyone has a logical explanation for it. Again, this is the state of affairs now, so maybe rather than debating it, we can all work together on a way to deal with it without putting people at risk.

My experience of allowing my son to taste a tiny bit of peanut butter off the tip of my pinky finger at age 4 proved to me that a person could die from eating the stuff. I hope he never again has to experience what happened to him that day. I truly hope to never have to administer an Epipen again. It was a terrifying and harrowing experience for all. But, the reality is, there will ALWAYS be a risk and there's always a chance that it will happen again.

We just have to keep on truckin'!

Let's stay on topic and not question a parent's judgment.
thank you,

This past August we went to 'Ohana for breakfast. The CM seating us picked up the basket of pineapple bread, etc. to bring to our table but then looked down at her paperwork and said, "Oh, I see there are allergies here, sorry, YOU CAN'T HAVE THIS," put the basket down and walked us to our table. When I told her that it would be OK, that DS would just not eat the bread and that it was not a danger to him to have it at the table, she flat out REFUSED to bring it to the table.

This really bothered me, so much that I had to e-mail a Chef I contact with some of my dietary needs. I asked her if this if a Disney policy or just 'Ohanas. She forwarded my e-mail to a Chef from 'Ohana, and they indeed e-mailed back saying this was there policy. They said that in the end it is up to the guest if they want the bread at the table. You should have recieved it. I am surprised that they won't let the bread for wheat allergies and gluten intolerences on the table, but let peanut sauce be placed on the table with peanut allergies. I do not like this at all, we should be asked. I don't want my family not able to have an item because I can not, and wheat won't kill me. I am now going to cancel my ressie for 'Ohana. I hope this is not a new policy for other Disney eateries. I still didn't get an answer on if this is a new policy or not.

Boy, you certainly sound like you are being judgemental! :rotfl2: How about reading all my comments before you assume things about my child and my parenting! For the record, I mentioned earlier in this thread that my dd does not have a severe allergy, like the one I described hearing on my local news. If she was to encounter peanut residue on the table, she would have been fine. She just can't eat the peanut sauce directly.

I don't think it is too much to ask when I tell my server she has an allergy, that they not give us the sauce!

And as for "when we were kids..." DeeCee said it best:

no no nooooooo,:guilty:
really, I was just asking , with all the storys of poor kids getting attacks from just having peanut butter in school ( not even their classrooms), that I was concerned, that this would be a highly % of exposure. (& I certainly didn't direct this at any of the posters here)

ok. back ontopic.
we have eaten at Ohana's twice, no problems. but I liked the menu from several years ago . but at least I got the recipe for the new potatos.

( I have a feeling , though, however I try to explain what I was tryin to say,, some MOD will still comment)

We have ate there twice. First time was really good although it was quite a few years back. Second time was this past August and I honestly don't have alot of good to say about it. The first part was pretty good. But then it all went down hill as it started to get more filled up. The server just completely disappeared a couple times. And when she did show it was obvious how rushed she was. Food was'nt anything special IMO.

I went in March and July of this year.

Both times with first timers and we were on the DDP.

Service has definitely slipped, but July service was horrible. Like others, you had to beg to get the full round of meats and we were there late, around 9pm. The meat was dry and one of them was downright nasty.

It's hard for me, because I really like the castle view, but the service is poor and we had to ask the server to clear our plates, as he continued to bring courses out and not clear. He disappeared for long periods of time and I was generally embarassed to have taken my guests there.

We also had a table of 8 and for dessert, he brought out one scoop of ice cream. (4 kids)

This thread seems to have ventured off topic again and has outlived it's usefulness. With that said, it's closed.
