Nevermind, dumb question by me... nothing to see here.

It is possible to take your stones out of some settings. If the stone is small or chips it isn't worth the effort. If the stone is near impossible to get at but obviously worth your while to remove you can have a jeweler do it for you before selling the gold either elsewhere or to them. Pronged settings are easy to manipulate and gold is soft. Since you are scraping the gold, in most cases it makes no difference if you wreck the piece getting the stone(s) out. Small chain nose pliers can be helpful - don't hurt yourself.
Sometimes a jeweler will offer to buy the stones and if they don't desire them they wont. Again chips and small stones aren't worth the effort. Be careful if removing stones other than diamonds they break.
Another option when removing stones is to save them and have a new piece made up using them. I have done this many times over!
I cant answer if a place you use will send your stones back to you. Personally if the stone is worthwhile remove it before you send it out or have a jeweler do it for you.
Some places actually add a fee to your bottom line for stone removal.
Refining fees, assay fees, treatment charges, brokering fees, handling fees are ALL questions to ask about when you are being told you are getting back over 90% of your value.
Finally, what I'm saying here really doesn't pertain to those that have a minimal amount to sell. But thats an individual call.
If you are unsure what you have and what its worth get an appraisal from a jeweler. Tell them its for insurance purposes. In some cases this is very worthwhile.
I'm still confused - is this good or not:
A local coin and jewelry shoppe is paying for 14 K - $14 per penny weight(?)
If we don't accept the offer do they send back all the items? I read though the post but was unsure.
So does anyone know if thats a good rate? I'm really confused. (and math challenged)
The local place I went to offered $22.50 per pennyweight for 14K; usgoldbuyers was slightly higher.

If the gold is 14k thats not a good price and its still going up. The companies the other have been discussing seem much more fair.

Thank you, thats what I thought.
I'm still just a little leery of sending it away, and not seeing myself what they do with it. Plus, the thought of it getting 'lost in the mail'.
And then the gemstone thing. Do they keep them or take them out and return them?
I just called GoldFellow since I am in S. Florida. They were very nice. I am going to make an appointment tomorrow I think to go in and have them look at my stuff!!
