Wow - guess who will get the H1N1 vaccine before I can?

As a tax payer, I am glad they are taking care of that population. Not because I feel they deserve it more than others, but because of the costs involved. I've been in prisons. They are not luxurious by any means.

I've also had people I know go to prison. None committed violent crimes. They don't stop being people when they go in. You just pray they can stay away from real trouble while they are in.

It is ridiculous that the distribution of this vaccine is so random.

I agree, it is crazy that is it so random, some places wont see it until December, when other places have enough to go to clinics twice already.:confused3

We are still weeks away here, too. I've stopped listening to the excuses. Besides, I think we already had it.

I have no problem with it at all. Disease spreads very quickly among a confined population in close quarters. Prisoners are human beings.

I get that prisoners are humans, but what will they do with those coming in? They get new prisoners every day. Will they give the shots to every incoming prisoner too? Maybe I should go commit a crime so I can get a shot.... It may be the only way I get one. :confused3

It really infuriates me that some states are vaccinating people twice already when we're struggling just to vaccinate people the first time.

Personally, I don't view incarceration as something to inspire jealously, but do what you need to do. ;)

What state are you in? I wonder if this is going on in every state. There was front-page article in the Fort Worth paper about this last week. The very next day there was another big article saying that the powers-that-be had changed their minds because of public outcry.

I am in Texas. I hope you're right.

If a prisoner gets sick, they WILL NOT lose income, they WILL NOT lose work time, they WILL NOT lose the ability to care for their child, they WILL NOT have to pay for their medical care for their illness, they WILL NOT potentially lose their job because they were out sick.

Taxpayers in the working world should aboslutely have precedence over criminals. The cost to me if I get sick would probably be MORE than the cost of one prisoner getting sick.

If I get sick, I lose income from lost time at work. If I get sick, I have to pay someone to care for my child because I am unable to. If I get sick, I have to pay (at least a portion) of my medical costs.

This is awful! I feel bad for the people that want it and can not get it....we have had the h1n1 vaccine here for over a month and we still have plenty(they have clinics 3 times a week) they have got more each week here.I am taking my dd3 for her 2nd dose in about a hour.I am in florida and most of the counties have some vaccine.

I live in Florida and this is not really true from what I know. Our county DOES have it and gets more weekly, but it is severely restricted to pregnant women, kids 6 months-18 years, healthcare workers, and those that care for kids under 6 months. That is IT.

When I click on the counties here http://www.doh.state.fl.us/DEMO/php/myfluclinic.htm they either don't have it or have these same restrictions.

My kids got the mist at the Dr's office. But as healthy 40 somethings, DH and I can't get it yet. I think we should get it before detainees at Gitmo.

I agree with the OP - it bothers me that criminals are getting this vaccine and others, especially those deemed "high risk" do not have access to it.

I don't want to get to hard into political territory here....but what confounds me is how the media and the feds are, IMHO, cultivating this fear among people and saying there is a national health emergency, etc, you must get the shot if you can, etc etc etc, but there is such a shortage!! I honestly don't know what involvement the feds have in the production and distribution of these vaccines, but it just burns me that they, along with the media, create all this hysteria and then there isn't enough to go around.

Grr.

You dont think the guards are tax payers in the working world?

Sure they are. They should have the same opportunity I do to get vaccinated.

Please note that I never said that everyone inside the walls of a prison should not get the vaccine ahead of the public. I said prisoners. Everyone that works there is just the same as me - a working taxpayer.

BTW - if you didn't read my other thread, we found that the public heath clinics were offering the h1n1 flumist to anyone that showed up.

We got it but that trip the clinic was an adventure in itself.

what is not true? yeh I know there are lists of people that can get it but there are a lot of counties that have it..we have had it for a month and they still have clinics everyday...I did not say everyone can get it,i said there is alot of vaccine in florida. My whole family got it and my dd3 went for her 2nd dose yesterday and there are tons of people getting it and they still have plenty.

I would hate to be a poor guard in a prison full of fluey people.

Vaccinating the prisoners is the smart play..

You must be a health care worker in contact with people or care for a child under 6 months. That is the only way to get the mist as an adult here. Yes, there is plenty here BUT it is only to a select group.

My kids did get the mist at their Dr. My friend took her kids to the health dept since they are under 18 (one with asthma). Schools will give it also but no telling when that will be.

I wish they would open it up for others since they have been offering it to the first risk group for about a month and still have plenty left! My sister, in central FL, has been unable to get it for her 2 little ones.

They have it in alot of counties in central fl...maybe she can drive to a nearby county...you do not have to get it in the county where u live.I looked at the myflu florida website and if you click on the map and click o each county you can find it.If she has little kids it would be worth a little day trip to get the vaccine.these counties have h1n1 clinics now...
SARASOTA,BRADFORD,CLAY,COLLIER,COLUMBIA,DIXIE,DUVAL,FLAGLER,HAMILTON,HERNANDO,LEE,MARION,NASSAU,ORANGE,PASCO,SEMINOLE,LEON,WAKULLA AND JEFFERSON.
these are just some of the counties I found that have clinics going and giving the vaccine if your on the list.here they are doing kids up the 18, health care/first responders, caregivers for elderly and babies and people with health conditions (pretty long list) .I got mine the very first day they were given here and they did not have a lot of people comming in for the mist and they offered it to me and my dh but that was before they knew about a shortage and my county still have alot of vaccine and have got more every friday for a month.but I would have got it anyway because I am a caregiver to my dad.

actually all the h1n1 doses the pentagon received went to deployed troops. it covered 1/2 of our soldiers. supposedly no vaccines have gone to gitmo except to guards.

they do offer seasonal flu to prisoners.

did y'all know that iraqis have universal health coverage paid for by us? just wanted to throw some of my leftiness out there. :)
