Wow Disney buffets are expensive

Pardon me for being ignorant... today we went to old country buffet... less than $20 for both of us to eat. A buffet at Disney for dinner is more than $20 per person! I guess I never really thought that was expensive until comparing it to somewhere else. The money tourism bring in :flower:

Too funny, we went to Country Buffet last night with my parents and six of us ate for $49! DH and I sat there thinking that our next buffet will cost twice that much for just the four of us, but nobody looked like a princess and gave me an autograph so I guess you can't have everything! Only at a Disney park would I pay so much for food that is sometimes okay at best (although overall I think the food at WDW is very good). One way I feel better at sit downs in WDW is to think that compared to the high price of a hot dog, the high price of a buffet isn't so bad! Just make sure you go hungry and get your money's worth!

We also went to Country Buffet last night, and while it was cheap, I don't think the food is quite as good as Disney's buffets. I'd rather pay the extra money and eat in Disney any day. :sunny:

::yes:: Disney is the only place that I'll even bother with a buffet. You just can't compare a Disney buffet with the typical Ponderosa type.

On our last trip, DH told me that next time I'm planning to only include buffets or other all you can eat restaurants. He figures if we're going to pay that much for food, he wants to be able to control the quantity. I guess he has a point - any other sitdown restaurant costs at least as much as the buffets, and you only get one item/plateful for the same amount of money. So I guess we'll do a lot of Chef Mickey's, Boma, O'Hanas, Crystal Palace... this isn't sounding bad!

on our last trip unless it was counter service it was buffet or all-you-care-to-eat meals... we just prefer them... but we also combine meals and go to a late breakfast seating and call it "brunch" (and then skip lunch) or a late lunch/early dinner seating and call it "lupper" (again, eliminating a meal)... we find we get our money's worth, it reduces the amount of time we spend in restaurants and the kids can always find something they like and dh and i have never been dissatisfied... of course, there's always the extra perk of the characters or the princesses visiting too!

Ok glad to hear the food is much better at least:)

I know sometimes just because something is expensvie doesn't mean it's better.

True; if you want proof, compare the prices at the DTD McDonald's to the ones by your house!

The Trail's End Buffeteria isn't too bad price wise. And we thought the food was really good. The best value at WDW IMHO.

Weeat a lot at Golden Corral (a lot like OCB) -- but I don't think the food is quite as good as WDW, either. Put it this way -- I've had good meals there, but I've never been so impressed that I wanted a recipe off of GC or OCB yet... however, I have been known more than once to go looking for the recipes of things I've had at Disney! :earboy2:

We found out a long time ago that by and large, the WDW b'fast buffets didn't pay off well for us. Our kids were always too excited to eat, and let's face it, while you might be able to fathom a pricey plate of carved ham or steak or an elegant cheesecake dessert costing some moolah -- breakfast by all accounts should be the cheapest meal of the day. Give me a peice of fruit, some cereal or an egg, some toast or a biscuit, a glass of juice / coffee -- even throw a krispy creme or, ok, some blintzes or crepes in there -- it STILL isn't price-comparable, to me anyway. And yet the prices for the WDW b'fast buffets (versus the lunch or dinner) just aren't that different. NAd in our case, our kids eat a LOT more at the later meals! Just the dessert bar alone is probably worth it, haha... (Plus -- they are more apt to sit down after running around all day, versus trying to get them to sit still at the day's start!) So with rare exception, we tend to do lunch and dinners morethan b'fast buffets. I do admit that we did 2 b'fasts last trip and they were tasty (Cape May and Cindy's for the gals -- the guys, who hate all things princess, did Cape May and subbed Crystal Palace for Cindy's!) However, we all agreed that we got more bang for the buck out of the dinner meals (Chef M's, Ohana, Crystal Palace, HoopDeeDoo, etc.) We also do some non-buffet meals, but I have to say, one of the things I love about buffet is that with kids, you can easily get them more options than just the kid's fare. My son loves salad, my dd loves soups and veggies and -- who'd a thunk it -- seafood, and middle son is a real meats/potato man. THe standard kid fare doesn't offer that sort of variety -- it's nuggets and fries and dogs and maybe mickey pasta, over and over and OVER again. And yet, because our kids are so different, we can't have them split an adult meal -- they would never be able to decide what to get! So at least at the buffets, they can still have the occasional nugget, but also the "other" stuff too -- a refreshing change from the typical kid fare, and better for them, really!

I also like that it's READY and waiting -- that waiting stuff, after a day in the park of it, is hard on hungry kids! ANd as any mom knows -- if the kids aren't happy, then mom isn't happy, and if MOM isn't happy, ain't NOBODY happy... just ask my DH!

Actually, I have - and they are IDENTICAL (except for one McD's near my house where a Big Mac is actually .10cents more!).

It just depends on where you come from. I live in the North East (points to name) and food and the like is just more expensive.

I find the food at WDW in general to be about what I'd pay for comparable meals at home in comparable establishments. $6-7 for a burger/fries combo at a counter service, $20ish for a nice piece of steak at a decent sit-down.

It's all relative to where you live. That said, at home I don't dine out nearly as much, LOL, so my wallet does feel a bit lighter for it.

I agree - we are from the Northeast too and low 20's a person for dinner is not bad. pick out soups, appetizers, desserts, entrees. Yummy!!! The counter service at the parks is what I think is truly overpriced.

Did you ever eat in a McD's in New York City (Manhattan)?

We tried Old Country Buffet once when it first came to town not knowing anything about it. We like trying new restaurants. NEVER AGAIN! The quality of the food was lousy. We aren't huge buffet fans, but this was just blech. I will gladly pay extra for a Disney buffet! princess: pirate: :earboy2:

While a disney buffet appears to be expensive, you need to breakdown what you get and what it would cost if you paid at a regular restraurant, both Disney and local.

Your beverage @ 2.00
Your salad @ 4.00
Your appetizer @ 4.00
Your entree @ 12.00
Your desert @ 4.00

I only gave an estimate (and under the actual cost), but at any regular Disney restraurant this combination would be much higher. This is our way of justifying the cost of buffets. BTW, we also do Trail's End because it is a great bargain and the food is good. We don't generally do character meals as a couple (we save these when dining with friends and family). We sometimes visit H&V and plan to visit cape may for our first times next week.

Most of the buffets at Disney at character related and your paying extra for that. Plus I don't know if its the excitement of WDW, but my family looks forward to the meals..All they have been talking about is the chicken strips.. :)

DS13 & I are doing buffet brkfsts due to the prices being lower

Crystal Palace char brkfst
Chef Mickey char brkfst
Donald's char brkfst
Cape May char brkfst

I just took my girls to Old Country Buffet this morning for breakfast (because my DH is out of town and he normally cooks Sunday morning breakfast and I was too lazy to do it this morning. :) ) Any how it cost us under $15 for the 3 of us to eat and food is nothing to right home about....but my girls like it and it was easy....I much rather be paying more for a Disney buffet...much much better food and get to see charictors. :)

DH & I comment all the time about WDW food prices vs. home. We go to Macaroni Grill -the kids eat kids meals that come with drink & dessert. We'll get entree plus salad for an extra 1.50 maybe an appetizer or whatever. It's about $65 or $70 before tip so we don't think WDW is so bad when you're in WDW and possibly being served up a big heaping piece of Mickey or Goofy with your meal.

i'm so glad others feel the same way i do... when i see people on the boards (and even irl) gasp at the prices and such, i don't always get it 'cause prices here (also on long island!) are not much different... i feel better knowing i'm not alone in my acceptance of the prices! LOL!
