WOW! Alcohol to be Served in the MK

Re:Walt rolling...He allowed smoking and not drinking, so I'm not sure he's the moral authority on what's appropriate in a theme park. And they still allow smoking in more places than alcohol.

I don't get what the big deal is...
* alcohol is served everywhere else
* alcohol is not required to make people horribly rude and annoying (as we've all witnessed)
* I need a drink more in MK (after fighting crowds) than any other park ;)
* I think themed drinks during MNSSHP and MVMCP would be fun
* I think themed drinks in the lands would be fun too (pina colava in adventureland, sam adams in liberty square, cool futuristic drinks with glowing ice cubes in tomorrowland, etc)

While I see your points, I don't anyone thinking about what Walt wanted is looking at is as a moral ideal, more that of tradition.

It is funny that some are arguing this is not a big deal because it is isolated to a single TS restaurant during one meal alone. Yet they go one to speak of a desire imbibe though out the day, through out the park, all the way down to booze in the Dole Whips. 40 years of tradition disappears opening the door for an easy expansion to other restaurants and then carts. The argument will be BOG has caused no problems, why not expand an offering our guests desire?

But where does this argument end? Should MK open a tequila bar similar to Epcot? That bar has run with out issues for years, why not bring that concept to MK? There is clearly a demand for such a product and money to be made.

Should MK, or WDW open a Hooters like bar? There is demand for this concept as the marketplace shows. It could be done in a manner that limits the exposure to the general public.

I think the argument for serving alcohol in the MK must start with the reason it was forbidden in the beginning. Walt felt alcohol was not needed for a family to enjoy a day of fun. Indeed, he felt the consumption of alcohol would harm the experience for the families he desired to serve. Does removing this ban help provide a family friendly environment? The fact other areas serve alcohol weakens the argument for adding this to the MK. There are already options for those that absolutely must have a drink. Hop on the monorail and there are a more than a dozen options already in place.

I believe this is the beginning of the end of the MK wide ban. There will be no argument not to expand into other TS and other meals. From there the argument to prohibit CS and carts is very weak.

While I imbibe when I am on vacation and usually stock our refrigerator with beer and wine I am sadden to see this change.

To me, it is a loss for the MK.

MK has changed many rides, dining places, but this is the first time my reaction is "Change is Bad".

I see all sides to this argument and I am torn about the decision...

I drink. I have a few drinks on vacation, and I definitely don't think that one restaurant serving alcohol at one meal a day will make people run around the MK topless or even be a noticible change.

I also am definitely not on the side of "but Walt said..." because I understand that Walt Disney was an innovator and a visionary who went with the times and understood that things change.

But, I do understand the *disappointment* in this decision. Because it feels to me that it's a strictly money making decision that they are trying to play off as "making sense" due to theming. And I'm not buying that line.

So, I guess I'm not happy about it ... I'm not upset by it... I'm just "huh, this feels weird" about it

I don't get the whole "Walt's rolling in his grave" bit. I can't remember ever seeing anyone stumbling through Epcot, Hollywood Studios or Animal Kingdom that was clearly under the influence. What's the big deal here? It's one sit-down restaurant serving beer & wine. Could they expand it to other sit-down restaurants at the Magic Kingdom? Possibly. But as Disney prices, who's really going to drink enough to get drunk? I just don't see this as that big of a deal...

Totally agree, very well said. ::yes::

I think it is nuts everyone is making a big deal outta it. I drink wine, and my DH drinks, more than his fair share of beer.

I went a # of times and never noticed there wasn't wine/beer on the menu. And I have gone to France for wine, and Margaritas in DTD. However I wouldn't leave the MK to go over to Epcot to get a beer/wine. (certainly the minority of people would not go.)

At Disney prices, ZERO people will go there to purposely get intoxicated.

VERY few will get intoxicates unintentionally. (Just drinking more than they should have.)

Most people will go and have 1-2 drinks.. or get soda or water which they still can, and it won't matter.
Also IMO Zero people are going to give up and not go to DW again cause 1 (or possibly eventually more than 1) serve wine/beer.... It just isn't the point of DW.

And those the quote Walt... there are thousands of things he might roll over in his grave for.. this is much lower on the list than say the innovation of the bus system :crazy2: , or the not putting up of lights on the Epcot walk way cause of cost, or ___fill___in___blank__here____.

I don't get the incriminating label some people put on alcohol. How do you go from putting beer and wine on the menu of a restaurant to the Sodom and Gomorrah visions I have read over on the restaurant board?

It sounds like a smart business decision, and I'm sure it will many patrons happy.

You must have never been to F&W on a weekend then. I have seen drunks there every time we are in Epcot during the F&W.

I have to agree here as well. I will have a drink or two while sitting on my balcony in a villa, but I would be too cheap to purchase many drinks at MK. I'd rather spend my money on dessert in France at Epcot.

I think removing Mr. Toad from the MK was a big deal (and a bad decision). Allowing wine to be served in a restaurant makes perfect sense.

I totally agree. And besides, they're not letting the drinks leave the restaurant as in "to go", so people aren't going to be walking around with a glass of beer in their hands like at ballparks or stadium concerts. I've been to the Food and & Wine festival twice and have never seen an obvious "drunk". I really think this will all just fade away and nobody will even notice a difference! :drinking1:ssst::drinking:

Almost got in a fight one time at Epcot with a drunk guy. So, if it's available it will happen some time that someone drinks too much.

As for me, I've never had the urge to drink at the MK, so I don't care.

Well, speaking for myself and many casual comsumers of alcohol, it's not an urge to drink at MK but rather the enjoyment of having a lovely glass of white or red wine to compliment what I hope to be a scrumptious new French inspired menu! This upscale menu for an MK restaurant may work out if there are enough people who wish to eat there. Personally I"m for it and I hope it does well, one shouldn't always have to leave MK to get a better meal! It's been a long time in coming!

I don't envision Disney bringing the Food & Wine Fest to the Magic Kingdom.

Agreed! BOG I sincerely doubt will be giving to go cups!
