If money were no object to me, I'd still rather give my kid a modest "normal" birthday party and donate the rest to a good cause.
I've got a kid with a summer bd and another with a late fall bd. I've done parties for the summer bd at home, with cake, ice cream and traditional games, and it's been much more fun for all involved than the more expensive variety. For the fall bd, it's too cold to be outside, and it is worth it to me to spend $200 to not have to have 15 six year olds running around my house. So, we normally do an inexpensive bowling party. But $500+? No way.
