Wouldn't it be nice if DVC offered it this way?

We are family of 5 that just joined DVC. In the past & especially now I always thought it would have been nice if the one bedroom had 2 queens instead of just the 1 king size bed & then there was also the pull out couch in the living area.

Why do you think they didn't have the one bedroom have the "studio" room & the living area instead of the "king" room & the living room? This way the units could sleep 4 for a studio, 6 for a 1BR, 8 for the 2BR and 12 for the GV.

Any thoughts?

Because they were made to be "Home away from Home".

Homes have a master bedroom.

A one bedroom unit is good for two people. For two kids, let alone three, I would prefer to have a second bedroom.

Who wants to sleep in the living room with the kids in the bedroom? Wouldn't it be simpler and more comfortable in the two bedroom?

I don't understand your point?

My point is that it would be comfortable enough for many families to have a 1BR that would accommodate 6 instead of having to use more points & go to a 2BR.

Melsmice, apparently any discussions of "family of 5" in DVC get routed to the debate board. I'd simply say that you should use your own discretion when deciding upon a unit size for your brood:) :) .......

Well each to their own, but personally I prefer one king bed in the 1br. It is more private, and seems more like......well, I don't know, but it just seems better to me!

While putting "5 in 4" does get rerouted, this is about changing the bedding in a 1 bedroom to accommodate up to 6.

Personally, I like it just the way it is. There are 5 of us, and we love the 2 bedroom units.

Personally we love the King bed!! We have a King at home and love that we don't have to go "down" a bed size.

We are a family of 5 also. We LOVE the King Bed. WE have one a home and absolutely hate when we get a double or queen while on vacation!!! OUCH! My aching back is what we would say prior to joining DVC....

I think when they designed DVC, they assumed a couple would usually occupy the master bedroom, so that is why they put a king. It would be nice if they offered a 2 queen or double option for non-couples staying together. But I think they just want to have 1 option to keep administrating the program easier.

I definitely wouldn't want them to take away the king bed in the master bedrooms. The would be so....pedestrian.

A "Home" has a maser bedroom. A "Home Away From Home" resort needs a master bedroom. A master bedroom needs a king bed, not two queens or doubles.

We stayed in a one bedroom for a weekend at BWV, it was awful. We have only one kid and would only do that in a two bedroom if we go there again.

You can't really call it home unless the kids are in their own bedroom, you have the living room for tv and late night hanging out, then just like at HOME, you can retire to the bedroom, I can even stay up a little later to see if their is a Star Trek on anywhere.

It goes to what Disney was trying to sell. They were trying to sell an upscale vacation experience...six in a one bedroom(new layout, not breaking existing occupancy rules), six in a one bedroom does not qualify for the experience they were trying to sell. They already have that at the Wilderness homes, or whatever they cal them.

If you do a poll, I am sure the vast majority will agree to leave the master alone.

We sleep in a king at home but there are 3 of us including DD who is 4. I hate having someone sleeping in the living room and I would much prefer two queens or even 2 doubles in the master bedroom so that DD wouldn't have to sleep w/ us or worse on the floor. I also wish they had differant options or maybe the option of a daybed in the masterbedroom. I still love my DVC though. And heed Eros's advice ;) ;)

When the four of us (wife, 2 kids, and I) stay at a DVC resort, we get a 2BR. When my wife and I travel to the Epcot Food and Wine Festival without our kids, we stay in a 1BR. In either case, it's great to have a living room in which nobody sleeps, a kitchen, and a master bedroom with a king size bed. And when we're with the kids, it's great that they each have their own bedroom and bathroom.

I agree with Richyams.

We also have a king at home & love having the king in the 2BR, plus the privacy was nice. I just thought it would be nice to have the option of using less points to be able to have a 1BR & sleep 6 if a family was comfortable enough with it.

EROS - you're right. Everyone needs to do what is best for their family.

I hate to go to the over-crowded tenement comparisons, but that is not what Disney was trying to create with the "Home Away From Home" resorts.....Hence the name "Home Away From Home".

How many people sleep in their living room at Home with two to four kids sleeping on two queens or doubles in the master?

This was Disney's idea, not mine. I liked it and bought into it, I would be very upset if they were to change any units to that configuration. Lickily, they can't without a huge majority of members voting, it will never happen.

hey could build a .....what's the adjective? Lower end? Cheaper? Budget? DVC as one of their next projects, I don't think they will, I think the public's reaction to the units as built so far and the rate they have been selling, makes it pretty much certain that they are going to stick with what works.

I wouldn't mind seeing a cheaper(lower point) option somewhere, maybe and AllStar DVC? I certainly would not want my desire for a King bed to be a 'request'.

If DVC didn't have the Master BR and king size bed, we wouldn't have even considered to join.;)

DW and I have been in a studio and going forward it will only 1bdr for the two of us and 2 bdr for three or more. We love the king and the privacy of the living room on the morning.

I just thought it would be nice to have the option of using less points to be able to have a 1BR & sleep 6 if a family was comfortable enough with it.

Fortunately this is not what was sold or what is being sold. I think it would lessen the experience and reduce the value of the investment. Also DVC imo, builds to the masses and not the individual.

I know you're looking at this as what would work for you and that's OK. Remember though that you are dealing with a timeshare and there are standards in the industry. That's not to say that DVC has to do things the same way but they will follow the template to a certain extent. One of the reasons DVC didn't want to have a 1 BR sleep 6 is that they want you to need to buy and use more points for 6 people. Even though the 2 BR at VWL, BWV and BCV sill technically sleep 8, they're really only designed for 6 comfortably. We've had this discussion before and there are those that feel as you do but the overwhelming majority want the setup the way it is. They also couldn't reasonably have 2 different setups for the 1 and 2 BR units. Remember they no longer guarantee even the studio plus units at BWV.

MELSMICE....I just took your original post as a musing as to whether others thought a different 1BR layout would be a good idea. In that spirit, I'd say that I could definitely see where this would have a lot of appeal to those with 3 or 4 children.

I don't see DVD offering this on current resorts. But let's say, hypothetically, that they did lay out the 1BR at the new Saratoga Springs with the ability to sleep 6 officially.

I'm just thinking out loud....say Disney thought that sales would be slow and needed a hook for sales (like they did by stopping poolhopping at SAB).

Would that screw up everything if that one DVC home had 1BR's that slept 6 (within the rules)? I can see that for some that would make the SSR even less desirable, but for those who are caught in that 3 child dilemna...would they constitute enough of a market?

Just a thought. That's part of the fun on these boards, don't you all agree? :)

I think SSR and other future DVC resorts still need to offer 1BR units with a king in the master bedroom and a double or queen sleeper sofa in the living room, which works out to occupancy for 4.

Although I personally think that a 2BR is the way to go for familes of 4 or 5 or 6, I wouldn't object to a seeing a new type of 1BR at future resorts with a capacity of 5 or 6. Perhaps such a floorplan could be a "1BR Plus" with an second bathroom (or at least a powder room with toilet and sink) and a living room that sleeps 3 or 4, possibly with murphy bed in addition to the sleeper sofa. I would think the master bedroom should still have a king. The point chart for a "1BR Plus" could be higher than a 1BR but lower than a 2BR.
