Would Your Report This? (Work Question)

They weren't impeding traffic in any way!

As I said, if I was driving by a median with people standing on it, I would be afraid that one of those people would step off the median, either on purpose or accidentally.

Also, are they blocking the view of the road?

I think you have to put it in context, and most people know and expect some cursing in those situations. Although I will say I dated a Marine for a couple of years, and he may have cursed up a storm working or with the guys, but turned that off at home.

You are right, they mostly do have respect...we've hosted several family events and *most* of them don't talk that way around the children. There are a few immature exceptions that haven't learned to adjust their civilian-life social filters yet.

Wow, and you live in New York ;):rotfl:.

I personally don't go around cursing at people but I also don't tattle when I hear someone at work letting it rip. The OP doesn't know with absolute certainty that her co-worker was cursing at her. My position is that the OP should mind her own business and let the co-worker dig her own hole.

I know, even in NYC we can be civilized, lol. :thumbsup2

Of course I've overheard cursing (and have cursed) at times, but that isn't the same as cursing at someone.

I would consider someone cursing at me to be aggressive, and that is not okay, especially at work. It's not as egregious imo to say the f word in passing, although it's still unprofessional.

OT, but Funny coincidence!! I was looking at your Cinderella pic, and I have a picture of her on my cell phone!! A friend of mine that works at Ft. Rucker knows her, and sent me a pic of her dancing with her boyfriend in his dress blues!! I looked for her the last time we went and I was going to show her the pic, and take one with her to send back to my friend, but I didn't see the right Cindy!

In that case I would give a light tap of the horn, and make sure they saw me before proceeding. I would never say get the f out of my way, especially in my work parking lot. If I was in the car with a friend, family member or co-worker and they responded like that, I'd think they'd gone off the deep end.

Of course if you were concerned about people standing on medians or nearby, you wouldn't be able to drive 10 feet here. ;) Pedestrians are swarming everywhere.

Most people I know have better things to do. Sorry but I think if you go out of your way to get someone in trouble then you must have a lot of time on your hands with nothing better to do. I would not waste my time with something as ridiculous as this. People have a bad day. Get over it.

I just think that its sad that something like this still bugs you enough that youre willing to go out of your way to report it.

It wouldn't bug me personally, but it would bug me professionally. In this situation the employee acted in a manner that was unprofessional, on the property of said employer. In order for the employer to be profitable they need customers. In order for me to get a raise, I need my employer to be profitable. If the attitude of one of my coworkers was reflecting negatively on my employer I would worry that said customer may take their business elsewhere and that they might go home, and tell their family and friends (or post it on Facebook like so many people do) then my employer just lost the respect and the business of several people.

When an employer looses business, people get laid off, or downsized. I work with a team, I expect everyone on my team to uphold a common respect for said employer and for said team. Coworkers yelling at people to "get the blank out of my way", is not in the best interest of my career. It reflects negatively upon my employer and negatively upon myself and that is NOT ok with me.

I need my paycheck, so I can have "something better to do." I want my employer to succeed so I can succeed.

It's a such a small world, too bad you didn't run into her. She was by far the BEST Princess we saw during the trip, and especially at Akurshus (not sure how you spell that but figure that's close enough, lol). She was super sweet with ds, he just warmed right up to her. I think he could have hugged her all day. :goodvibes

Snow White on the other hand sent him running in the other direction. :lmao:

Sorry to everyone else, please proceed with the arguing. :rotfl:

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 I agree--though I find that on these boards there are more people who want to tattle than people who don't!! I'm shocked at some of the things people post that they have tattled on or want to tattle on- seems they were never taught to mind their own business.

I once saw a guy stab another in the chest but I decided to mind my own business and not ******* :rolleyes2

Absolutely not, especially since I've heard more than one teacher and clergy person drop the f-bomb. No one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes, has a bad day etc. Frankly I'm glad I don't work with a bunch of people that have nothing better to do than worry about every little thing everyone else does.

OP, worry about yourself and your own conduct. Unless this person was actually verbally assaulting a patient or visitor I think you should mind your own business.

I would classify what this person did as verbal assault.

:thumbsup2

I'm flabbergasted that anyone thinks the driver's behavior is OK in any way, shape or form. I can swear like a sailor, but it's completely inappropriate to shout a profanity at anyone on your employer's property. "Having a bad day" or "blowing off steam" is an utterly meaningless excuse.

OP, I wouldn't talk the employee directly. This is not an interpersonal issue; there were two other employees present. It is a work issue and that's exactly what HR is for. It could actually make things worse for you (or even be against policy) to discuss this with her directly. You never know how someone will react.

I agree. It's up to HR to ignore or deal with this as they see fit. They have an employee they probably need to keep an eye on. I think they'd rather hear about it from another employee than wait for her to go "postal" on a patient. This was not someone on their own time, this was an employee still on property after her shift. IME, bad behavior left unchecked, often escalates. I'd hate to be hearing that lots of people knew she had self control issues and hadn't ever said anything AFTER an incident happened.

This employee had absolutely no idea who they were screaming at. As others have said, it could have been a donor, or a patient, or the family of a patient. As it was, they screamed at a vendor their employer has a business relationship with. Not cool. Bad days happen and people make mistakes, but that doesn't mean they should be exempt from the consequences - and one of those consequences is someone noticing and reporting your behavior.

I thought it was interesting that even one of the most supportive here of the right to do something like this to your coworkers at work when you are "off the clock" has never seen it happen. That's because it's not normal!

Really, now we're comparing a curse word to a federal offense? Boy our prison system would really be crowded if we did that!!

What I'm confused about is if it's such a large area for 3 people, why would this person tell you to get out of the way? I'm thinking perhaps you all were blocking the view or people had to slow down for a reason.

I'm one that believes when you are off the clock and heading out of the parking lot, it's off company time. I know that doesn't set well with most on here. Now if you all had been inside the building, I'd have a different view point. If she had gotten out of her car and came up to you, I'd have a different view point also.

However, I think you are going to HR anyway but you asked for opinions.

Hey guys,

Several posts were bypassing the word filter, and so I deleted them. Please remember that bypassing the word filter is not allowed on the DIS. Just spell the word out, and let the filter do its job.

Simply put, don't use swear words and don't post or link to suggestive or inappropriate photos. The boards are equipped with censoring software. If you try to use a profanity, it will be filtered and appear as all asterisks. Please don't get creative in an attempt to bypass the filters. This is considered the same as using the word itself and will result in an infraction. If you post or link to pornography, you'll be banned from our site.

Sorry, it never even entered my mind to actually type the word **** on this board, I honestly didn't know this rule existed.

Lots of different points of view here. I was leaning twards the, nothing good is going to come of this, but the last couple of posts are swaying me the other way.

I know for sure that this statement was directed at us, she was actually looking and projecting what she was saying twards us. She was proabably only 6-8 feet away. The vendor was the first to comment "wow that was inappropriate, I hope she doesn't work here."

Now my thought is, if we were looking at a sign inside and she walked by and yelled this at us I wouldn't hesitate reporting her. Why should I treat this situation any differently because we happened to be outside?
So the vendor didn't know if she was an employee or not. So how was she "representing" the hospital? To me someone being rude in their own car in the parking lot is HUGELY different than being rude while in the building.

I once saw a guy stab another in the chest but I decided to mind my own business and not ******* :rolleyes2

Wow, I guess we better find money for more jails and prisons if someone saying a cuss word and being rude is "verbal assault". Sorry, that's one of the better stretches I've seen in a while.

I think answers on this are going to vary widely based on where you live (for example New York vs. midwest) and what kind of work history you've had.

I once read an article about things that mystify British people about americans and one of them was 'swearing is considered offensive.'

So at a facility that is based entirely on providing professional and compassionate care to people at possible the worst moments of their lives, an employee has been identified who shouts obscenities out the car window if her commute into the parking garage is disrupted. And now we're questioning whether a person who is in a position to do something about this should just go about their day?
I would contend that if you work at a hospital and don't report this activity, you should consider finding employment someplace where compassion and caring don't matter. Perhaps North Korea.
Certainly you can ignore it. Leave it to the father of a sick child to deal with this obnoxious employee. Let the new widow take a verbal lashing because she is standing in an area a clerk doesn't approve of. Or let the patient who is just trying to get home to bed suffer some verbal abuse from a hospital employee.
OP - your instincts are right. It's everybody's responsibility to make the world a better place. Call HR. What Would Walt Do?
