would you upgrade from a 5A to 4A?

Hello-
We have a category 5A cabin (mid-ship, deck 9) on the fantasy for our family of 3. We are about 49 days out from sailing and my rough count shows about 45 family sized cabins still available. I am *thinking* there may be a chance to upgrade to this bigger cabin at the port. At any rate, would you do it? Or would it depend on the cost? Would you do it and move down from deck 9 to say deck 7? I am happy with our cabin (9546), but also think more room would be nice!!

Thank you for any advice!

If upgrading, I recommend upgrading now instead of at the port. Less hassle and more cabin availability. Don't think you'll get a sizable discount by upgrading at port: when upgrading to a non-concierge cabin, there is little-to-no cost difference between upgrading in advance and at port.

I have stayed on deck 9 and deck 7. My preference is deck 9 as we are closer to the drink machines, pool etc. But it’s only 2 decks so that is somewhat trivial.

We have also stayed in both categories. We did the category 4 with 5 people and category 4 with 4 people. If it’s only the three of you, you will be more than fine on space in the 5a. You won’t need the pull out Murphy bed so all you gain is that space with an extra chair.

My opinion and only mine, I would save the money you will pay to upgrade and treat yourself to the photos, an excursion, etc. I think you will be very happy in a 5a with 3 people!

I could have switched from a category 5 to a 4 on the Fantasy for about $300 more. I watched YouTube videos and thought about it for a bit, but decided not to do it. Looks like the differences are a longer desk, the extra space in front of the veranda door for the Murphy bed (which not all cat 4's have - the one I was considering didn't), and the tub is a little different. We were in a cat 5 last time on the Magic and I didn't feel crowded with 2 adults and 2 little kids, so decided to save the $300. :)

So here's my insight-
For our upcoming cruise, we were originally in the verandah room with the murphy bed bc we were taking my mom with us again. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, she isn't able to go so we were left with the decision to keep the current room or downgrade to the room without the Murphy bed.
We have stayed in both and honestly, there isn't much added useable space for the cost difference. I am one who loves extra space, but from this standpoint, it isn't really worth the few hundred dollars. With 3 people, you (more than likely) won't miss it or need it. Seriously, spend the extra money on some delicious beverages (Hello multiple beverage tastings!), a photo package, Remy reservations, or an extra fun excursion.
Just my opinion. :cheer2:

We've stayed in both with 3 (2 adults and 1 child) and haven't noticed a big difference in space. As everyone has mentioned the space is at the end between the couch and the verandah or porthole (depending on room type). You may get an extra high back chair that fills that space or a Murphy bed depending on the room. And, the round tub sounds cool, but I didn't find it all that useful. Both are great, but unless it's a very modest cost, I think you'll like deck 9 more than moving to deck 7 for the wee bet of extra space.

I went back and forth on this recently too because we always stay in a 4A but for the NYC cruise, prices were higher than usual so we stayed on deck 7 magic which i think is a 5b... I kept going back and forth and the price jump would have been $1700 and I just couldn't justify paying $1700 for 30 sq ft so we kept our deck 7 room and it was perfectly fine for us... I might consider upgrading at port next time but I had a lot of FE and ornament exchange stuff that I didn't want to confuse anyone in my group by changing rooms at the port

The only other consideration is location. The 5s are split, either midship or way forward or way aft. The 4s are much closer to mid, it seems. If that location doesn't bother you and you have the beds you need, then stay with the 5.

We upgraded from 5A to 4B just a few days ago; we're a family of 4.

I'm looking forward to the extra space. The last time we went, we were on top of each other. I need that little extra breathing room. Lol

If it matters, we went from deck 9 mid to deck 8 aft (but barely aft, the cabin one door next to us is considered mid).
