I think you are confusing immigration and IRS. The two agencies have little to do with eachother. All legal citizens have a tax ID (their SS#) but having a tax ID doesn't necessarily make you a legal citizen, it's just a number the IRS uses to process your return. Immigration still requires sponsors, medical, etc. to become a legal citizen.

Exactly....and that's a problem. They need to talk to each other and find out who wants to be here, who should be here, who is here, and who has used the proper channels to be here.

But, I know....that's asking WAY too much of our government. Sad. :sad2: But, hey, heaven's forbid one of us misses $3.00 on our IRS forms. They seem to catch that pretty fast! So, they have the ability, they just don't want to make the effort in this case.

Unless they were doing (or had done) something vile, I wouldn't turn them in.

It would feel like tattling to me, so I just wouldn't.

But it's fine for others. :)

I hope that all of you "throw them out" fans have been saving your dollars. Because YOU are going to pay.

Who do you think picked those strawberries I bought today for $2.50? Who do you think is doing a lot of the lawn care to make your middle and upper class subdivisions look so neat? Who do you think is doing a lot of the work that is "Beneath" you? I have a family friend who owns a farm. They can't find workers willing to work for close to minimum wage and if they paid the wages the "poor" in thier town want. (ie. if I can make more on welfare I ain't pickin' Tobacco.....) then they would have to go out of business...

They actually sold the farm a year ago but if it weren't for immigrant workers (who can be both legal and illegal) then...

And don't you just LOVE the US double standard. If you get to Florida in boat from Cuba you are LEGAL, but if you cross the border in TX you are ILLEGAL.... Both folks were escaping poverty and looking for a better life, but since one of them came from a COMMUNIST country they can become a "productive" member of society????

The one thing that saddens me is that most of these "throw them out" posters have kids... Is this any better then parents in the 50's teaching thier kids that "Blacks" are second class? Are you teaching your kids about "second class" people?

As I stated earlier, I would not. But my local paper ran this 3 part series awhile back.

It touches on so many areas. I don't think there will be any "answer" to make it "right" for everyone and their own personal opinions.

Um, I have a guy who is a born and raised Floridian who does my lawn. I don't know his country of originan, but based on his last name, there's probably some British in there. I know his family has been here in Florida for many generations. Could I hire someone for less who would show up with a couple of illegals? Probably, but I'd rather give a job to a US citizen in business for himself.

I had full intention of buying a riding mower and taking care of it by myself, but between my son and I, we both have such bad allergies that it's just not practical many months out of the year.

As far as welfare, we should require those who are collecting to go work in these "labor" jobs. Why shouldn't they? If there are jobs available people should work. Depending on their situation, they could continue to receive housing and food stamps beenfits and day care help, but there's no reason we should be givign cash benefits to anyone when there are jobs available. If they don't like those jobs it will give them motivation to get off their butts and find another one.

Very well put. I totally agree. Immigrants are an important part of our economy, and you can't subtract 11 million workers without some pretty detrimental effects.

I was reading an article where one expert said new home construction could increase dramatically without immigrant workers. A house that was $200,000 would go for $400,000. That would definitely impact the average American.

We would be trading one set of problems for another. Perhaps emergency rooms and schools would be less full....but we'll be paying big-time increases for many other things we've become accustomed to getting deals on.

People say they'd pay more, but I don't believe it. Look at all the panic over gas prices. You combine that with highly inflated home and grocery prices, and you're talking recession.

Exactly. I'd also like to add that any one who thinks any job is "beneath" them is wrong. I think a lot of us took lousy jobs when we were younger and working our way into the world. DH worked at McDonald's. I worked as a receptionist and file clerk for $5.25/hour. A friend of mine worked in the tobacco fields - during her summers away from her pricey boarding school because her parents insisted she work. Another friend of mine bagged groceries while she went to EMT school. When it comes down to no money and picking strawberries, you pick the strawberries. If you don't, you have nothing but basic needs (food stamps, Section 8, and Medicaid) given to you and you have a rotten life.

Oh, and DH takes care of our lawn. But, I'll pay more for services if business hire legal people. I'll pay more for the strawberries. I'll pay more for the hotel rooms. I'll pay more. I hear people say how they'll gladly pay more taxes to fund the people who think the jobs are beneath them, but I'd rather pay more and have them work.

I agree

I voted - I"m not sure!! :confused3

Maybe we need to be specific about WHEN we'd turn someone in. If I knew a company was employing illegal immigrants - I'd report the company. If I knew that someone (legal or illegal) was committing tax fraud or welfare fraud - I'd report it to those agencies. If I was standing on a street corner and heard someone say, "I'm here illegally." - I'm not calling 911. Nothing will happen anyway and how do I know they were telling the truth and not joking around? I guess I'm an equal opportunity tattler because I have turned in a company that was paying their employees under the table (legal and illegal). I have turned in people for welfare fraud (they were legal). The only experience I have with an illegal immigrant is when the cops and the DA asked if I wanted to pursue charges against the one who worked under my SS#. Heck, yeah. So, I'm not on the look out for someone who's walking down the street waiting for them to make an admission so I can call ICE.
