Would you travel to Mars if you had the opportunity to?

I read an article recently online that it's expected astronauts will travel to Mars within the next 25 years. Would you go along if you could? For me, I'd say heck no! Too dangerous and risky. If something happens, there will be no rescue mission, and the astronauts may never return. But when it does happen, it will be interesting to hear about it.

Nope!! I like earth just fine. Besides after reading all the details of this mission it sounds more like a suicide mission than anything else.

The planned Mars mission that they're currently planning is a one-way trip due to the lack of gravity on the trip there as well as the weak gravity on Mars. Coming back to earth would kill the travelers as they re-enter our gravity field. They also have to contend with higher levels of radiation on the surface of the planet which will require them to dig shelter immediately upon landing. They don't know how long those people will live in the levels of radiation they're going to experience.

The only way you could get me into space is if it was like a ship from Star Trek or Star Wars. Since we're a long ways off from that, no thanks! Current methods of space travel freak me out!!

If you'd asked me before kids I'd have been all over it, but as others have pointed out this is almost certainly a one-way trip and as a parent I couldn't do that. It will be an incredible experience for those who do get the opportunity, though!

No way! The one way part freaks me out. I mean, you would give up all Earthly things - Disney World, going to the movies, out to dinner, etc. It would be an insanely amazing experience but I don't think I could ever overlook the negatives!

I saw something recently about an open invitation for a one-way trip to Mars, and they got soemthing like 77,000 entries worldwide from people interested. It was quite amazing to hear that high a number.

I'd almost like to do a documentary on a cross-section of those people to find out why.


Anyway, regarding the actual question, I think there has to be a lot of caveats to this, would it be the first explorers to set foot on Mars, or would there be an existing base.......or would it be a thriving small town/city (with its own McDonalds and Starbucks...j/k....)

I would love to go to space! I've always wanted to be an astronaut. Alas, I'm an inch too short according to NASA. Not sure about this one-way ticket, but I'd do it if I could come back and brag about it.
